January 1, 20233 yr That is the problem with these long contracts. If the player doesn’t work out then we’re lumbered with them.

Full agreement with AS Monaco for €38m fee, add-ons are included 🚨🔵 #CFC French centre back will complete his medical tests on Monday — he’ll sign contract until June 2029.” 6.5 year deal. Let’s hope he turns out good otherwise we’re stuck with him. Todd loves 7 year contracts huh

Todd and team must think they’ve figured something out there. From a financial standpoint it makes sense. Buy young promising players, who may be expensive, but amortize it out over 6-7 year contracts. FFP is probably not even an afterthought with that model. When you factor in that the contracts are also reportedly performance incentivized then I think that limits the downside for Chelsea if the player doesn’t pan out. If they don’t perform, their pay doesn’t increase and that makes them easier to offload later in the contract.

Getting Gvardiol is not guaranteed especially after his performances at the WC. Expect city or madrid to lump big money for him if they fail to win the league this season. We've learned from last season when we went into panic mode and spent 140 mill combined on Cucu and Fofana because we didn't act in time to replace Rudiger and Christensen.

It makes you wonder why another PL team has not snapped him up already, but the French do have a habit of turning out some very good young defenders. Fingers crossed he is the next and adapts to the PL well. Probably why other PL sides did not touch Baka.... Just see what @BordeauxBluehas said of him. If he is right this won't be a good move. Hopefully the normally very reliable BB is well off the mark here.

Yea, it’s quite mad how mistakes from the Roman era got repeated within a few months of the new ownership. The Fofana deal is a carbon copy of the Kepa deal, panic, insane fee and lack of due diligence.

Hope he comes good of course, but no longer counting on it. He was likely crocked by our mismanagement so we only have ourselves to blame. Proven at international level means nothing. International football is lower Championship quality at best, despite its profile.
January 4, 20233 yr I’m a fan also had him on fm in a Stoke City game where I only conceded 8 goals in a Championship season, he was brilliant

If they don’t perform, their pay doesn’t increase and that makes them easier to offload later in the contract. Everyone seems to be forgetting what happens if a player on a long term contract, & a fat contract turns out to be a bust like Bakayoko or Sarr. Hypothetically you sign Badiashile for £35m and you give him a 7yr contract, bump his wages from £10k/w to £90k/w (we all know Boehly loves flashing the cash). If he is a success, you will only need to amortise £5m on the books annually. Now if he is a bust, you are screwed. You will need someone to either take him off your hands or keep loaning him out hoping he improves enough to be brought back into the team, or you can sell him. The problem with loaning him out is you need someone to pay at least a £5m loan fee, & cover all or a large chunk of his fat £90k/w wages. Now apply that to a £120m player on a 6yr contract who you have bumped his wages from £40k/w to £200k/w. We just need to pray none of them is a bust.

January 4, 20233 yr Not watched much, but not a big fan. Very raw, looks like he has an erratic mistake in him, however Saliba has transitioned well at arsenal, so hopefully so can Badiashille. Not better than Colwill for me though.

January 5, 20233 yr I suppose we can move this to general now. Welcome Benoit, never heard of you before you were linked to us. Which is a good thing following our track record of signing big names and them being underwhelming. My predication (or perhaps more hoping) he will be a good signing, perhaps helping us play closer to what Potter wants whether that's a mix of a back 3 or 4. Or a flat 4 moving forwards
