Hadn’t realised he turns thirty this year. A couple of papers picking up the fact that his contract runs out in 2017, and noting our 1-year contract policy for players over 30. While I’m optimistic the club and Gary can agree he has a role to play for a few years yet, it brings up that old concern that a move might seem more appealing than a 12-month extension.

                                                                                                                                                                                                   

Concerning to think that there’s every chance we could be without JT, Cahill and Ivanovic in 18 months. Even more so with only two other defenders (Zouma & Azpilicueta) currently bedded in the side. 

Think we will be keeping him for a few more years yet.

The fact he's a home-grown player and we will be losing JT makes it difficult to think he'd leave.

I know he has his faults but he has been a great signing. Definitely worth the 8m.

The timing of his deal running out when the loan of Christensen in Germany by is ending is interesting.

It may be wise for us to give Gary a new deal until the summer of 2018 or 2019. See where we stand in 2017. If we have enough quality without him then we could get most of our 8mill fee back, makes good sense if his wages remain at 80k or so.

I wouldn't let Cahill leave under any circumstances he is easily one of the best English CB's, He is so underrated it is unbelievable

Aren't most defenders hit peak at around 30? I think he deserves a new deal, not sure about Ivanovic. He's a good defender, his downside is he never stepped up to be the leader at the back JT style.

We cant let Cahill leave, he is quality. It will be interesting if we get stones in Jan/summer though. Stones and Zouma will need time to blood in, while also keeping our captain AND cahill in/around the first team. tough job for Mourinho to balance 4 quality centre backs' playing time and happiness! Cahill seems the easiest of the 4 to drop in that sense

Zouma already much better than he and the addition of a ready made central defender in the summer is essential.  Cahill certainly a great second option and we should keep him for that sake.

To be fair mate there is a huge shortage of decent CB's in world football- If we were to look at the Premier League I don't see many better than Cahill. (Kompany, Terry, Koscielny and maybe Vertonghen) 

He's a good defender. Though what he offers us the most is the fact that he's English.

Cahill was a massive part of our Champions League Triumph-A triumph within which our defense played an absolute epic part so I wouldn't say the most he brings to the table is his nationality.

Aldweireld, Smalling, Stones, Dier, Zouma, Kompany are imo better as well. Hes above average, but not much more. On par with players like Jagielka. Wouldnt mind having him around as he seems to be a great guy ti have off the pitch, never causes any fuzz and always gives his best. Dont think he should be starting though

I think he's much better than above average. Yes he looks better alongside JT (they always do) but over time you can say that about many footballers who were considered top players.

Both have potential to be better than Cahill but at this moment in there careers they are not better than Cahill.

Cahill is head and shoulders above Jagielka as a player as was evident at the last world cup when both played together and Jagielka was found wanting.

At no point in my post have I said Jagielka is a bad footballer, just not as good as Cahill.

Jagielka better than Cahill? Not a chance, not even close. Cahill is !uch better than jagielka, and he's better than just above average. Unbelievable how people are now retrospectively writing our players of because of this season

Jagielka would never have been able to play as well as Cahill did in our Chapions League and Premier League and League cup winning season's. Yeah, Cahill isn't world class, but he's better than Jagielka.
