Willian

The amount of times I've read it's a good signing for them because he's consistent is ridiculous, its like they've never seen him play.

He is the most consistent player I have ever seen. Consistently inconsistent.

Quite relaxed about Willian going to Arsenal - same as David Luiz before him.

But I tell you, if he suddenly starts taking really good corners for that lot, I will be f**king fuming!!

He has all the ability in the world. Just needs to focus.

Goodbye to the most frustrating and overrated player I have ever seen play for the club.

Oh come on. I've always preferred Pedro out of the two but he's not even close to our most frustrating ever player.

Can't blame him for leaving for Arsenal,  that pay check is hard to resist. He maybe a hit for a while, but that consistency over the last decade won't change just because he signed a long lucrative contract. In 12 months time, AFTV will accuse him doing an OZIL.

For me he was. He's one of the most naturally talented footballers I have seen at the club, but he flattered to deceive for the majority of of his time here. If he was a player with limited ability then it would be a different story, but Willian has had all of the ability a footballer can ask for. I think all of that talent has been wasted on him.

Can't think of many other players that were clearly as talented as Willian but rarely showed it. We've had the Bakayoko's etc. but we knew they were duds quite early on. Willian has always shown he has the ability to impact a game yet struggled to do it often enough.

Completely agree with the two of you. My sometimes milaigned views on Willian are exactly because of this.

He has every single tool an attacker can ask for, except ability in the air, he has the same raw talent as Zola or Hazard, he simply wasted that talent through lack of application and, imo, desire. He could have been a contender for top awards and had Real or Barca hand out Hazard levels of cash to get him.

The sh*t from spurs, they bought his flight, but Willian, he saw the light, he got the call from Abramovich and off he went to Stamford Bridge, he hates tottenham , he hates tottenham, he hates tottenham and he hates tottenham."

He's been a solid servant for this great club, but I feel ambivalent about his departure.

He's getting on in years and IMO his legs aren't what they used to be. He used to run himself into the ground during the Mou years, but I don't think he does that quite as much anymore.

Although technically he's not far behind Hazard, what made him such a useful role player in our two title wins was 1) his pace/acceleration off the bench (2016/17) and 2) his work ethic. To that end, his best season for mine was in 2014/15 - he still retained the ability to burn defenders with pace/acceleration and provide the odd bit of magic from distance (Everton), but his constant running up and down the right flank, as well as his very good positioning and covering (for an attacker) enabled Ivanovic to give us an extra goal/aerial threat as he bombed up the right. He consistently put in a 7/10 performance during that time.

He always had his spectacular moments, summed up by that ridiculous debut goal versus Norwich, but his decision-making in the final third has never been good enough for him to display those moments more than intermittently. As his physical attributes decline and his ability to throw himself around the pitch reduces accordingly, I don't think Arsenal will get anything like what we did out of him. Plus in my view he has never been a natural leader, so I'm not sure that he's the mentor that Arsenal's younger players really need.

‘Flatters to deceive’ seems an appropriate phrase completely created to explain Willian.

That's a good one... I had always thought "full of sound and fury, signifying nothing"

Willian: “One of the reasons I wanted a three-year deal was to be part of a plan. When I talked with the manager he told me why he needed me for three years. He first wanted to qualify for the Champions League & win it by the time I left. That’s what I wanted to hear.” [Sun] #afc

Right but we are already 1 year into that 3 year plan, a 2 year deal gives you the same 2 attempts to win it. What a load of B

It's pathetic when players just cannot admit they move to another club purely for financial benefit, the whole world revolves around money, it's how it works. Just be honest you dumbass !

Yeah, I don't get the whole 'winning the CL' bit. He's going to spend a year of that 3 year deal trying to get back into the CL, then he has 2 years to win it. We're already qualified for next season, so with a 2 year deal with us he has the same number of goes. I get that maybe he felt like he'd play a bigger role at Arsenal than with us though, with some of the players we have already, plus the new signings, I'm sure he'd get less and less game time. Ultimately that sort of talk is usually cover for 'they gave me the money I wanted and there's a bit less competition', which they can't really say!

Absolutely no problem with any reason a player wants a move though, if you don't want to be a Chelsea player any more for whatever reason, then fair enough. Not going to hold it against him at all, he's given us a lot of his professional career and been a part of some great moments. No point getting annoyed by it with some of the exciting talent we've got in our squad for next season, onwards and upwards!

100%.

Footballers and their self-entitled bubble. If I was on a contract and another company offered me more money and longer deal, I’d leave. I fully understand that footballers have a massive safety net regardless of how much they earn as they will be earning loads anyway, however it is a short career and they are setting themselves up for life. I love my job, but family and security come first.

The idea of Arsenal winning the CL is funny but I don't see anything objectionable about a player at the tail-end of his career wanting reassurance that he is genuinely in his manager's plans for the next three years.

But it's Willian- the default position of lots of people is to get offended by whatever he does.  Look at the cry-baby gurly response to some silly photoshop thing someone on his media team did after the FA Cup.  People in here took huge offense at that and discounted everything he ever did on the pitch because of that.

Honestly, it pisses me off as much as the Brexit w**kers who moan on and on still, even though they "won".

People who trashed the player for season after season and wanted him out now get all bitch-whiney because he's left.

People, he's gone, you won, get over it!

I've read a post here and there saying Good riddance to Willian and then complain about a lack of loyalty in the same breath, too :face_palm:

Yeah the instagram(?) thing was silly but people still hold it up as definitive proof of a bad attitude two years later. I'm sure if you asked any of the managers he's played for (bar Conte, who seems to have a special talent for falling out with people), they'd tell you something different.

It's bizarre that he's being painted as a mercenary when he's been with us for so long, and only left because he wants to play football for at least another three years and we wouldn't offer that to him.

It's probably about time I changed my avatar but if there's any chance it might cause the slightest amount of irritation to these people then I might keep it.

I've got no hard feelings towards him, I think he's been a good player for years, not amazing, but good.

Can't blame him whatsoever for landing that contract, a player has to look after himself. And I would pay no attention about what he says when it comes to Arsenal being an amazing club and blardy blah. I remember how fuming I was with Joe Cole when he went to Liverpool and w**ked them off, it turned out that he was forced to say all them things and he later apologised and berated Liverpool for how they pressured him. Plus, Cole did us a massive favour with Hazard.

of course I would never want them to win it but The possible sting of that if it ever occurred would be minor as we won it first.
