Beyond that... Butland just isn't that good. We'd end up trying to flog him next summer probably, like we are struggling to do with Drinkwater. Oblak just isn't going to happen. So the only other choice really, at this late stage, is Cabellero or Bulka.

I just can't see us dropping £70m on a goalkeeper. 

£20m for Butland sounds like more our sort of deal.

If we got Butland that would be the best situation to happen, it would mean we had a good backup.

I feel like the GK position could end up being our new LB issue where we lose a truly world class player and keep spending £20m every summer in the hope of getting a good bargain instead of just splashing the big bucks on a truly world class replacement. 

I can't remember the last time we had a world class keeper since Cech left.

Is Butland actually any better than Willy? 

I struggle to see how any goalkeeper can just 'slot' into the starting 11 with ease. 

The season starts in 3 days. 

I would imagine a relationship needs to be formed with the defense, and this takes time. 

I am not really a fan of Willy, but at least he is already at the club and knows the players etc.

 

Butland would become Caballeros backup real quick. He is a championship GK currently...

I cant see it myself, we've left it far too late to get that kind of deal over the line.

I think this situation will ultimately reveal the clubs ambitions

Butland for 25 mill    make a profit on the Tibo deal  35-25 = 10 mill pounds     but no world class goalkeeper since 2004

Kepa for 70 mill        show the rest of the league we mean business just like the dippers did signing Ellison

Kepa is better than Courtois for Sarri’s teamplay. I think that Courtois’ decision to go away is good for the team.

Too late, how so? Spain's mandatory release clauses remove the selling-club-objecting factor, so no Everton/Pickford scenario. All that's left to do is sell the club's/manager's vision to the player and agree personal terms. 

If anything causes it to not happen it will be a reluctance to part with that type of money, not time pressure. We've made a habit of doing stuff on deadline day over the past few windows, by those standards we're (obvious caveat: reportedly) getting this done early.

Overspending a tad on a player that Sarri actually wants is a preferable situation to foisting Butland upon him, imo. But we'll see what happens.

A world record fee for a player I haven't heard of until today. Hope he's worth it

RM wanted him last summer he had a buyout of 20 mill then, the move broke down and AB extended his contract with a 70 mill buyout

I've never heard of him either. However, i was listening to the radio an hour ago and heard very positive comments about him.  Might take him a little while to settle but they say he's a top class keeper in the making.
