We've got a new Kepa

Featured Replies

Apart from the saves, he came out of the box to contest the high balls, a far better ( not perfect) presence than Mendy. His passing and throwing been good, we looked much more comfortable playing out with a GK who could play a bit.

Saw Kepa has the best positive xG out of all keepers in the league this season having only played 3 games.

Does this basically mean he is saving more than he is letting in?

Yep, didn't really know what the correct wording was lol.

So Kepa's post-shot xG (+/-) is 0.71 per 90 this season, meaning he's basically preventing 0.71 goals every 90. The next highest on the list is Pickford with 0.44, which makes sense as Everton have been great defensively this season.

If we look at the 'big boys', Alisson is on 0.12, Ederson is on -0.03, Lloris on -0.07, Mendy -0.32 and De Gea down at -0.24.

I miss the days when stats weren't so confusing and it was just possession and shots on target...

Well villas xg was something like 2.7 on Saturday. So that's huge. It'll balance out.

xG just tells a slightly clearer story than SoT. It's not perfect. Villa would have had a lower xG if they weren't chasing the game because they were 1-0 down. But it's better than SoT which include hopeful shots from outside the box that are gently collected but don't include Baileys 1 yard header that hit the bar.

Very good again. His clean sheet run ends on Saturday though, sorry @Modand sorry for all us when we fail to beat United again...

We’ll, you predicted Toney to score a handful tonight and hasn’t occurred. So please, just tell us that we’ll loose by 3 with goals from Maguire, Fred and MacTominey so I can go the match reassured 😉

A draw would not surprise me, however we are dead on our feet and that diving tw@t Fernandes will likely be the instrument of our miserable weekend...

Not to mention after we laughed at the midget they have playing at the back he is bound to play a worldie.

Kepa saved us from losses these past 2 games.

Aside from that Bailey header, that should have been scored, Kepa has been a wall for us.

Tactically we have been woefully set up these past 2 games. 2 players who are not wingbacks played as wingbacks, setting the system first, team second. Naturally both those players were useless there. Both times our midfield was Shredded to pieces, both times Havartz was his usual ghost self, both times we should have lost.

Thankfully Kepa had other ideas.

Thought he had another really good performance, and was a lick of paint away from being the match winner and likely man of the match again.

So for Villa, Brentford and a top 4 rival at home our man of the match has been our keeper twice and a CB. And not by small margins. You know what rest shows, sort out the attacking phase players Potter!

Like others have said, thought he played well again on Saturday and kept us in the game in the first half.

My only minor criticism, and I realise I might be being a bit too harsh with this - but I think if he goes for Casemiro's header with his other hand he probably saves it. See it happen quite alot where keepers for some reason go with the hand which is further away from the ball.

As I say I realise I might be being a bit harsh but don't want to be too critical as apart from that he saved us multiple times again in the first half.

It's what infuriates me with modern keepers. This going with the other hand to make the save look more spectacular and dramatic. You would never have seen a Banks, Bonetti, Shilton or Clemence try and save a shot that way. Bloody ridiculous - especially when it costs us points. If the ball is heading in the top corner to your right - use your f**king RIGHT hand!!!

I don't think this is correct actually. By going with the top arm, it extends the reach because of the shoulder extension. Also it is easier to push the ball  away from the goal if your body angle is above the ball  rather than coming from under the ball.

I don't think it is for theatrical effect, I think its the way they are all taught nowadays.

If Kepa was guilty of anything, and it really is splitting hairs, he could have been quicker and moved his feet a little quicker to improve his starting position before pushing off into his dive.

As WhiteWall said above, there must be a reason for keepers using that hand as it happens so often. I don't think the sabe 'looking good' ever comes into a keepers mind when making a save, its just muscle memory at that point with their reaction time.

I need a goalkeeper to explain the thinking behind it to me as I just don’t understand it either.

Surely (in Kepa’s example) you’d get a stronger connection by going with his right hand?

I still prefer those keepers who move their feet first and then make shots look easy like the keepers you mentioned above.

I just wonder if all this Ballon D’or business makes keepers think they now have to make their highlight reels look more spectacular.

That’s one of the reasons I like Allison at Liverpool, he has no problem standing there catching the ball if that’s all it requires.
