September 4, 20223 yr He is certainly one of our most exciting players yet he also needs to be careful on those physical defensive challenges some refs tend to get upset about them.
September 5, 20223 yr Set to sign a new 6 year contract that will make him the highest paid defender in our history: https://weaintgotnohistory.sbnation.com/2022/9/4/23336619/reece-james-close-to-signing-new-long-term-chelsea-contract-reports

September 5, 20223 yr Pretty much our next captain best player to come out of our academy for me. I hope once he’s got past two years we extend again if his performance is still of the highest quality!!

Not sure it was smart to increase his salary 4x. That is more than Van Dijk, Cancelo, TAA, Diaz earn. The way Boehly is throwing around the money I hope there is a long term plan to increase revenue. Koulibaly reportedly is on £295k (£162k net), Sterling on £325k, Fofana on £200k, Cucurella on £175k, Aubameyang on £160k (net/gross?). Mount will most likely earn around £200k+. You then have Jorginho & Kante due a renewal also.
September 5, 20223 yr Author Fantastic - a mighty responsibility for his mighty shoulders but somehow I think he'll manage.

Yes must admit I've been very surprised at the high level of the wages being handed out ... probably "BAU" level for American sports, which is no doubt the model Boehly is used to as an investor in two US franchises ... I hope they know what they are doing !!!

James for me is the best RB in Europa so I understand that one.

I know you're never happy but I thought even you could get some joy about the best player out of our youth academy since John Terry and the best right back on the planet commiting his long term future and prime years to us. 250K for Reece James is an absolute bargain given we couldn't replace him and would have to spend 60/70m on an inferior player if he left and then pay them a similar salary I'm looking forward to see Reece here for many more years and fully expect him to go down as our best right back ever. The lad is frighteningly good. Edited September 5, 20223 yr by HazardousChoice
September 5, 20223 yr 250k per week for 6 years is a bargain given the inflation in football. Let's say he agreed to 200k over 4 years, in 2 years time his agent be asking for a huge increase for renewal, and we either pay up or risk losing him on the cheap. He's a top player, pay him what he deserves and let him focus on playing.

The lad is frighteningly good. You are missing the point though; it isn’t about him even though I think the wages are ridiculous compared to his peers. It’s all over the board; paying Cucurella 3.5x his Brighton wages, Fofana 2x his wages, Mount will probably demand parity with James at 3x his salary, Kovacic will demand the same next year. We already pay more than City’s reported wages without accounting for these new contract renewals, despite trailing them by over £150m in revenue.

In isolation Reece's deal is probably ok for the reasons others have mentioned, I'll add my own in that players who have attacking qualities tend to earn more so his camp could argue for a premium there. But yeah in general it seems like we have abandoned having a sensible wage cap, you had to have proven world class ability in this club to earn the amounts Hazard and Kante did. But football is changing a bit now, players are holding off signing contracts and looking to run them down, we have to look at how much it costs to replace a player and make them sign early with bigger wages over buying a replacement. Nothing excuses paying Koulibaly near £300k a week though if that figure is accurate.
September 6, 20223 yr We basically just "signed" Reece James for £78M on a 6 year deal, and we don't have to pay him anything ... James 250K a week x 52 weeks x 6 years = £78M Koulibaly 295K a week x 52 weeks x 4 years = £61.4M, plus transfer fee of £33M = £94.4M. I know which one I think is the better deal on paper ! Not even close LOL

Not even close LOL I agree this is how we should look at finances. You also aren't factoring in the resale value of James as an asset each year which is considerably higher than koulibaly. I'd love to see a full breakdown on amortisation values for each club line by line. It would make interesting reading and would change how fans view transfer fees and wages entirely. In a normal course of events, academy players should earn greater wages than new transfers. Or a club should be looking to have x% of academy (or fully amortised) players on their books.
September 15, 20223 yr I would like to know what has happened with Reece, even he has been poor for his standards,it seems having the new deal as affected him.
September 15, 20223 yr Am i watching different games to everyone else? I thought he was one of, if not our best player last night again.
