October 14, 20223 yr If he is out till proper football resumes then that is a big issue for Potter to resolve. It massively affected us last season when he and Chilwell were out. We got a good back up in for Ben, but did not do so for Reece. This side losing Reece is like the side losing Hazard when he was the man.

October 14, 20223 yr Very bad news if he is out until after the World Cup. He’s a player at the top of his game, every time we hit a bit of form someone else gets injured. We just can’t catch a break with these big injuries. Yet if a Liverpool player is out for a couple of matches the media would have you believe the are the unluckiest club on planet earth.

From Sky sports: " Potter: James will see a specialist this weekend Chelsea head coach Graham Potter has confirmed Reece James is due to see a specialist over the weekend about his knee injury. It follows the report in the Daily Mail that James could be ruled out for between six and eight weeks - putting his place at the World Cup in doubt. Potter said: "He's due to see a specialist over the weekend so, until we get that information, there's not too much else I can add unfortunately. The rest would just be speculation from my perspective. "We spoke yesterday and he felt not too bad but, until you get these things checked, you never know. "There's no point looking into the doomsday scenario yet. We just need to check and then go forward.""

Exactly ... all this stuff about X weeks out and operations is just pure media speculation at this point. Daily Mail up to their their usual tricks ... and then a whole load of media freeloaders like football.london and the Metro just pile on in with their usual click bait.
October 14, 20223 yr When I first read surgery I feared the worse. Potter's comments aren't too bad, just need more info and a Specialist consult. Terrible timing, and does seem that Reece can't put a long run of games together (be it muscular or contact injuries). Very unfortunate - was longing for a Fofana and James combo down the right! He'll come back as strong as ever. Does raise the question what we do at RB. Could RLC or Chalobah convert to cover Dave, or we need to go shopping in Jan sales!

October 14, 20223 yr I know it’s the wrong foot but couldn’t Chilwell or Cucurella play on the right?
October 14, 20223 yr Given we signed Cucurella I am assuming the new owners knew about what happened to Ben and Reece last season. With that in mind why, when TT system relied so heavy on the wingbacks, did we only sign Cucurella and not a cover for Reece as well? I am assuming they and TT were not so foolish as to believe Dave can play at a top level for 3 games a week for multiple games, so what was the idea? RLC as the main cover? Be a big challange for Potter, and he may need to change the shape and use Trev as a right back.

Because it's harder to get cover for Reece because he's a bonafide world class untouchable when fit, Chilwell isn't. If Chilwell stays healthy all season he'll still be largely sharing the role with Cucurella, if Reece was fit all season no one else would get a look in, and potential signings would be well aware of that. If we had someone with Cucrellas ability on the right side I don't believe we would ask Reece to play more than twice a week, we would not risk it unless that week happened to be City, CL knockout game, Liverpool.

The Chiwell/ Cucurella situation is a ticking time bomb simmering in the background, eventually the manager will need to choose a settled back 4. I reckon one of them will demand a move away to save their international career. Chiwell is now on the fringes of the national team, and with Cucurella if he aims to play for the Spanish team he will need to be a regular at club level. With James long term our best option is a player in their late 20s, or a player like Frimpong at Leverkusen who can double up as a RW/RWB. No quality player is coming to ride the bench in the hope James gets injured.

Because chilwel has just recovered from acl injury hence that side is more urgent. 2nd, like you said ruben + Azpi can play there. We can always play sterling as rw and play in 4231/343 shape similar to what we did against wolves and chalo/Azpi as rb/rcb Edited October 15, 20223 yr by Bob stark

Sterling, Pulisic, RLC, Mendy. How many more do we need?
October 15, 20223 yr He will miss Arsenal at home, Man City away and Man Utd at home + the 2 remaining CL group games and Aston Villa, Brentford, Brighton and Newcastle away that’s 9 games. In a normal season playing 2 games a week he would miss 16 (considering 8 weeks) So from a chelsea perspective it could be worse if not for the World Cup. He will be ready for the business end of the CL and a title charge was never realistic anyway For Reece himself it’s ofcourse very disappointing if he misses the World Cup I really hope he isn’t rushed back to play in the WC though for those 9 games I have trust in Azpi and RLC to do a good job in that position Edited October 15, 20223 yr by azpi28

He'd have probably missed that if he was fit.

October 15, 20223 yr Sad that he's injured. This seems to happen to us every season when one of our players is playing at their best.
