Mason Mount

Featured Replies

To be ultra fair to Mount, its very rare to shoot without taking a touch, Just check out Frankie and Stevie G, probably the best at long range goals, the touch to set up, its how quick you shoot after, go on you Youtubers check em out.

I think Mount is struggling right now, but I think much of the fanbase is very harsh on him. In an ideal situation, Mount would have been a squad player this season, but circumstances have forced Lampard to use him as a key player (transfer ban, underperforming players)
Lampard would probably have preferred to bring him in slowly, like he has done with Reece James.

Agreed they have been harsh (I hate seeing that kind of vitriol) but a part of that is down to him being an undeserved first choice player. He shouldn't be and fans are rightfully frustrated. I don't know when last I've seen our team so incapable of playing in tight spaces. And yet we have Kovacic, Pedro and of course Pulisic (injury aside) around. Most chances right now are being wasted because the guys in high positions (Mount, Tammy, Willian and Kante) have poor control, play badly weighted passes or can't see past their nose.

I don't think Mount is an undeserved first choice player - he has been great at times this season. But he shouldn't be starting every game. I recall it was similar for him at Derby last season - he suffered a dip in form there too, but it's to be expected and it's down to the coaching team to manage that.

ALL of our youngsters should make the use of the situation this season as they will largely all get "free-ride". Next season and beyond they will be viewed as  more established and expectation levels will be that much higher and fans will be less forgiving if they are inconsistent.

Mount should be taking all our corners. It's criminal that CHO and Willian are taking corners when Mount is on the pitch. You can tell a lot about a manager by these things. You have to have the mettle to tell your players who's taking corners, whether that risks upsetting them or not. Every time CHO or Willian step up to take a corner when Mount's on the pitch, a little bit of faith in Lampard in me dies.

Agreed. Mount does have some nice wicked deliveries.

Part of being a manager, a boss, is making the most difficult decisions that others can't or don't want to.

You have to be able to say the words and still command the respect of your players. As you say, you have to be a boss.

This is a good point, I do remember he took decent corners earlier in the season.

When we take corners I don’t expect us to score.

Stage 1 - the corner would have to beat the first man

Stage 2 - we’d have to win the header

Stage 3 - we’d need someone who is capable of heading it on target

Stage 4 - it would have to be headed into a part of the goal with accuracy and a bit of power.

We rarely get past stage 2

Forget who should take the corners, most if not all of them should be going short anyway.

Honestly given we are useless at attacking them we may as well stay in formation and have the corner kick taker just bang the ball out for a goal kick. No chance to be countered then.

I feel for Mount in all this. He seems to be copping a lot of criticism.

I can't help but feel he is a victim of being one of the few who has high energy and knows how Frank wants to press.

Lots of people saying he is the favourite, but for me it seems like there is no one else behind who can do that part of what he brings.

Well, if you put a decent cross into the danger zone, with whip and pace, you've got a chance. Anybody's got a chance. We scored recently from a corner. I can't remember which game. Emerson took it. Dave scored. It was the quality of the cross. Mount delivers quality balls from set pieces.

I think Frank was a once in a generation I can't remember another player that could regularly shoot the ball like that.

As most were so far out he wasn't closed down so quickly as our front men today.

Against Arsenal the chap next to me complained when we took a corner short. We then scored from it.

Next corner, we took it short. He complained again.

Can't understand some fans.

He really is sort of useless in terms of creating chances or scoring them lately. But his contribution to the ball movement and pressing is still important to this team. I don't know, maybe put him in the center next to Jorginho or Kante? I'd love to see him alongside N'golo, who is in his natural DM position... this would be a very high pace, dominant mid lane. But in front, creating chances, consuming them? That's not his game.

Should've had an assist if not for Barkley smashing it at the keeper and would've had a goal yesterday had it not been a great save by their keeper

I thought he should have scored from that chance. Both Mount and Barkley just smashed their shots at the keeper.

I did too though to be fair it is normally strikers that get those chances.

You would have hoped one of them would have had a trick like dropping a shoulder to get the keeper committing early, alas no.

yeah he took a heavy touch, and it let the keeper close the angle. Probably shouldve took it around him at that stage,  but its always easier on the tv!

I think you have to give the keeper a lot of credit in both cases ... he got out really fast to close down the space, and then made himself really "big" to smother the shots.

I think he has reached his ceiling for this season, and this is not really a criticism. How many 20 year olds are starting week in week out for a top 6 team and playing well at the same time? He's already ahead of the schedule, I reckon Lampard should "shield" him more, he doesn't need people criticizing him for not good enough at this stage of his career. People like Barkley needs to step up, and hopefully RLC will be back for the final stage of the season.

He played maybe more than 25 games this season as a starter. That's a lot. Sadly Barkley can't step up so we have no replacement for that position till RLC gets back. If only Kovacic could shoot a bit more regularly like he did against Valencia he could be the one to replace Mount but he naturally plays more deep.

Mount I think has been a good addition. He's played an important role as we've adjusted to Frank's style of play.

As others have said the real issue is that there isn't another player with his characteristics in the squad. Barkley, Kovacic even RLC can't do what he does in pressing high and creating links. If we want to play this way, I think he'll need help.

It looked to me more like trying to flick it across to Michy than trying to score himself.  Either way it was good goalkeeping rather than poor attacking play.

People are sometimes too quick to attack our own, and rarely accept that, on this occasion, the other player just played well.

TBF their keepers had a great game overall. Some massive saves.
