Robert Sanchez joins Chelsea

Featured Replies

He's not even good enough to be backup, really. Petrovic is about the level to be the backup. We need a much better keeper. But I suspect we'll go into next season with these 2 still.

Didn’t miss him when he was out injured, not one bit. Why is he in goal after the last game, he’s lost his place to a  better keeper Petrovic, who should of  been in goal , selecting him another example of a not winning context. No doubt Sanchez gonna be in goal vs City at Wembley.

Swear he was never this bad when he was at Brighton, he was a fairly stable goalie. I definitely don't blame him for the Disasi OG though, that was all on him.

first game from injury .. look rusty. I think he scores over petrovic with his ability to command the box (not like yesterday) but he needs to cut out his dilly dallying over the ball..

I don't think he is that bad either. I just think he is not mentally quick enough. He has disturbing under appreciation of urgency. Everything is too slow between touch and distribution. This was okay under Potter's Brighton but when de Zerbi introduced a style of baiting the press he couldn't cope.

Fa's forward to here and a fragile inexperienced back line that is required to give the impression of controlled,  measured passing amongst the defence and he finds the ball at his feet too often. A couple of near misses, sweaty moments and the errors are in his head then and his decision making falls apart.

Petrovic isn't brilliant with the ball at his feet, so he doesn't gamble. I don't see why Sanchez can't work this out.

he played against Leeds so if wasn’t his first game back from injury. He’s a  awful goalie makes mistakes every time he plays . How and why we paid £25 million for him is utter madness . He was all over the place for crosses to not just when the ball was at his feet

Ben Roberts had a bit too much say I suspect ...

Don't forget Kepa! He's back this Summer I think...

But on the flip side Sanchez' pass (for Sterlings sitter) that broke the lines I can't recall one similar example from Petrovic, happy to be proved otherwise and also there's many times Petro goes too far the other way and boots it when there's an easy pass on which in turn means the ball keeps coming back on us.

On balance I'd still favour the Serbian but I don't think the difference between both is the chasm people make out and long term we really need to upgrade on both.

The stats would agree with your assertation that there is very little to choose between them.

The expected goals (see red circle below) is not good for either of them, but significantly worse for Petrovic (basically the stat is saying that Petrovic has conceded 4 goals he should have saved, vs 1 for Sanchez), and Djorde is actually bottom in the PL on this (Expected per 90) vs all other keepers that have played a reasonable amount of minutes.

Both of them are great for #2 for me, and I agree we need a new #1.

Both are performing far below the level Kepa was at last year - in fact Kepa was top 3 in the PL on Expected/90.  (granted Kepa has been awful in years before that)

I agree with this. In fact I don't think there is a great deal wrong with Sanchez's technique. For me it's the speed of thought and the lack of a sense of urgency or awareness of danger that worries me.

GKs are best remembered for the errors, especially the unforced ones, and Sanchez have made way too many. I mean once in a while he's going to put in a great pass, but even the likes of Manuer and Enderson are actually very good at GK than just passing. I don't think he should get another game from now on unless injuries or suspensions, if we are serious about winning those games. Going forward, another first choice GK is required if we are going to challenge top 6 or higher.

It's the most unforgiving position on the park. Make three or four cracking  saves and nobody remembers if you drop a corner in the net to lose the game.

Meanwhile a centre forward can miss three good chances bit get away with it if they power in a header in the dying minutes to win the match. In fact they are praises for keeping their head up and still getting into the right position.

A real top quality keeper is worth as many as  10-15 points a season. The likes of Schmiecel, Cech,  Seaman, Edison, Dave Beasant...  We don't have a player remotely of that class just now. Petrovic is a really competent keeper (Sanchez isn't) but he isn't in the class you need to challenge for titles.

However we are nowhere near challenging for titles just now. I wouldn't be investing in a new keeper just now. There are bigger priorities.

Injured

Good to know with all these injuries it's not ALL bad news - swings & roundabouts so to speak.

Who the f**k was responsible for signing this guy? And why??

Dogsh*t poor with the ball at his feet yet we paid over the odds for him and gave him a long contract on decent money.

What with Maresca seemingly wanting a ball player (as did Poch), this transfer becomes ever more baffling.

The worst transfer under the new administration. How the hell do we offload the gormless f**ker?

We hired Ben Roberts from Brighton as GK coach, and Sanchez was his "guy" basically ...

I think the old adage applies : "never trust anyone who concedes a goal inside 45 seconds in an FA Cup Final"

I think I've said previously on this one it's mental how one part of the organisation doesn't seem to communicate with the other. Why on Earth is Ben Roberts having a say in transfers? And if he is surely he'd know more than anyone how inept Sanchez is with the ball at his feet - was this not discussed with the recruitment team or the manager? Absolute clown show behind the scenes as far as this transfer is concerned.

Dont worry, just six more seasons until his contract runs out ☹️

I think with Mendy falling off a cliff and Flappy McJelly wrists constantly being done in the air and from distance it may have been a panic buy to get someone big, imposing, commanding in the air and can stop shots. Oh and if he can be from Bright woop-de-doo
