October 20, 20241 yr Palmer had his worst game for us today. Almost every first touch was Lukakuesque. Very unlike him.

Not Maresca's best work today. Probably didn't watch enough Liverpool game videos during the international break ... 🙂 He tried something today, did not work in the end. I dont blame him for trying it, it made sense. Is not helped when only 2 of 12 shots are on target, compared to their mere 8 but 5 are on target. More important for Maresca is wins in the back to back Newcastle Games and then at OT. Anfield and then Arsenal we should not be expecting wins, they are ahead of us and don't need to be at their best to beat us. Newcastle and United however we need to, and should demand to, win. My grip is how bad we are without the ball, the pressing is bad and that brings so much pressure on the defence, who ar not great either. We are on the same page here. This is my point. It's what makes them a strong counter attacking side. They don't sit off and try to pounce on a mistake, although they will do that if it is on offer. They commit in groups all over the pitch and will win tackles in important areas. Then they are into our fleshy underbelly, right into the heart of a fragile defence and boom. Too easy really.
October 20, 20241 yr I think some people are being a bit harsh. I don't think Liverpool were great by any stretch. Yes, I agree we didn't work their keeper hard enough, and yes Liverpool managed the game well, but I honesty think a draw would have been a fairer result. I think it's progress going to a couldron of a stadium like Anfield and not playing like frightened lambs. I think we are moving in the right direction.
October 20, 20241 yr Only 8 game in for Maresca and 2 loses in the league Citeh and The Dippers think we deserved something today, disappointing always against this lot but remain hopeful
October 20, 20241 yr Liverpool has experience and pedigree, while we have the youngest squad in the league. If anybody needed evidence of why experience matters, that was it. There are some good signs about this Chelsea team and I believe we're going to improve but Maresca needs to do something about our defensive structure and find a better keeper. We're not going to get anywhere with that amount of defensive mistakes and a clown in goal.

He never looked like he could sort his feet out half the time. Sancho was poor, Neto weak and ineffectual, Jackson, other than the goal was non existent. But I'm not necessarily saying it against our players. We just do not work hard enough as a team, off the ball. We do not press and commit to challenging as a team. 35 yards from our own goal, 86 minutes plated and we are still having to fight tooth and nail to retain possession. As a group and as individuals they just work harder than us. I suppose that is the next level. We loo, a lot like Arsenal I those early Arteta days. Not quite as committed and a bit of a glass jaw. Let's hope our trajectory is similar Madueke went past Robertson quite a few times first half and I think it was him who passed it back for Palmer first half but he missed the shot. Even Neville kept mentioning that Robertson did not look right. Second half, he struggled to make as much of impact but I would have defo preferred he stayed at RW than putting Palmer there second half. Neto had couple bad moments but he also looked bright. He done that really good run and took two of their players out the game but whoever he laid it off for did not finish and then he did the brilliant cross at the end for Nkunku who missed. I would go as far to say I think Neto possibly starts our next league game. I am never too harsh on our players but I give fair criticism when due and for me Palmer was really, really bad and was our most ineffective player today. I am not judging him by his standards but what I saw on the pitch. I agree with the Arteta comparison. Young squad, in fact ours is younger and still naïve but positive signs also.

Neto made a difference and put in an identical cross for Salah's assist for Jones but Nkunku missed it. I don't see how you are saying Palmer played good but Neto was poor. I think Neto did more than Palmer in the second half than Palmer did all game. I didn't say Palmer played good. Where did I say that. I don't think any of our players played particularly poorly, although Sancho had probably the most opportunity to do something. I think you'll see that the gist of my post is that Liverpool work harder than us off the ball, all over the park. Palmer misses a right foot goal and who is 1 yard away, blocking it. Curtis Jones. Not a CB. I just don't think that happens at the moment with our lot. It might well come, but we're not good enough yet at this.
October 20, 20241 yr Sancho pen not given and falling asleep on Jones’ goal. It literally came down to two moments…. At Anfield. Against top of the league. Against the best defence in the league. Heads up.
October 20, 20241 yr Tonight we missed Gallagher. He'd be one of the best players on the pitch in a game like tonights (like Jones was for Pool) and it just goes to show you need a midfielder with that kind of grit and who's also able to press from the front.

October 20, 20241 yr Maresca has just said that Sanchez has been fantastic, helping us play out , and making saves. He says he didn't see the moments today that the reporter mentioned. I'm not going to comment on the above. I'm off to Arsenal Fan TV for a laugh

I agree on the first half Madueke vs Robertson and it may just be perception for me in that I am never too sure he has the ball under control. The deep cross from Neto was decent but I am not sure Nkunku really missed it as it was way geyond him. Think Kelleher had the post covered anyway. As I say we are progressing but I even felt as we entered injury time that it would have been more likely them getting a 3rd than us equalising

Best sides keep their shape and are organized on and off the ball, they work as a team regardless. But it takes time and effort to develop that system and gain that experience.
October 20, 20241 yr Why do we have to listen to Carragher on SKY still insisting on their 2nd penalty being a penalty. Just a moron just one tactical disappointment today was switching Neto to the right. He was skinning the defenders on the left and just became anonymous on the right. We really missed out there. October 20, 20241 yr Despite and okay performance. that was an opportunity missed today so feeling of disappointment, especially as when i saw the starting 11, I was confident of a result. None of our dangerous players really played well today and Liverpool had the best player on the pitch in Jones and their game management was a lot better than ours. Thought Latvia looked really good first half hour and Caicedo did well but too many off performances and sloppy passes. Shouldn't have taken Madueke off and playing Nkuku wide left was a waste of his talents. VAR did well for us today with correct overturns which is just as well with Sanchez in goal. He isn't and never will be a top 6 keeper and we HAVE to find better. Not often I want Arsenal to get a result but wont be disappointed if they beat the dippers next week. October 20, 20241 yr For their first games in a long while I thought James and Lavia were very good today.

Let's hope our trajectory is similar I rarely think at the end of a game that we have thrown everything into it. I always feel like we could have done more. There was a period in that second half where Neto was on the right wing screaming for the ball, it's an easy through ball, there isn't a Liverpool player within 10 yards of him. Play the pass and he is running right at the Liverpool defence. Nobody plays the pass though, they just walk and pass sideways 5 yards. This happens a lot. Nobody is moving enough, nobody wants to force it. We were 2-1 down for 40 minutes, and I never felt like there was any urgency. It feels exactly like you say, that we aren't working hard enough as a team. Reverse the situation, it's 2-1 to us at the Bridge, there is no way Liverpool ain't throwing everything at us to get the equaliser. You can almost be certain that Sanchez would be forced to pull off a few world class saves or somebody like Colwill making last ditch blocks to win us the game, but when do we ever bombard the oppositions penalty area? Almost never. We create an odd chance here and there and that's it, it's never sustained intense pressure. This is the same off the ball too, but it's even worse off the ball because there isn't any shape. With this inverted full back stuff, as soon as one of our slow 60 seconds of nothing possession breaks down, the full backs find themselves out of position and the remaining defenders are easily pulled all over the place. Everything about us is too slow and it leads to so many careless mistakes all over the pitch.
October 20, 20241 yr Lavia looked great, James shouldn't have started if I'm honest. Would rather bring him on if needed otherwise as Jim said it's a pre planned sub. Edited October 20, 20241 yr by Malcolm9
October 20, 20241 yr This team needs to claim a major scalp to take the next step forward. A win v City, Liverpool or Arsenal is essential.
