We’ve outplayed them today and they got a pen for a softer foul than on sancho, we will overtake them soon, maresca is building something big here.

No we didn't. Liverpool were comfortable defensively, we barely created anything. And in attack, they had a plan to hit us quick and it worked. They even saw out the last 20 minutes without much fuss. We need to stop passing for the sake of passing and actually start trying to hurt teams. Every time we come up against a loaded defence, we look useless.

I thought we played very good today.

Naïve mistakes cost us, conceding straight after scoring is criminal.

We gave the leaders a stern test at their ground.

We just need tweaks in the transfer market rather than loads of new singings and next season we could be up therewith the likes of Liverpool.

There was hardly any difference between the 2 teams today.

So frustrating. This Chelsea team with an extra year together would have probably put at least three past this Liverpool side. Will take the positives, it was a game of small margins decided by our lack of experience.

Happy with Maresca and the fact he has the balls to go to Anfield with the youngest team in the league and try to control the game and press very high. Overall we looked good, too bad we conceded immediately after scoring... Also if Cole passes to Madueke it's probably 2-2...

I trust this process and I believe we will peak at the right time in this season in order to finish top four.

Always disappointed when we lose, but is tempered with expecting it to happen, as I do whenever we face them, City or Arsenal at the moment.

More disappointing than losing is that they did not even need to get to 50% of their ability to win, we just gave it to them.

I don't think we are. I thought we competed against top sides a lot better last season. We were scoring goals and looking like a genuine threat. We barely created anything today, and I don't think we were good against City at all.

Well we did lose 4-1 at Anfield last season, so 2-1 is an improvement for me 🙂

Sorry, I don't think we've outplayed them at all. We've had the ball more than them, but as has been illustrated many times before possession counts for nothing

Like Arsenal against us in the mid to late 2000's. They played with the ball, we scored the goals.

Palmer went missing and made the wrong decision multiple times.

Because he was shut down constantly.  Doubling up on Palmer should have allowed space for Sancho, Madueke,  Neto to do something but they delivered virtually nothing as well

The substitutions just after equalising sucked the life out of us

Naive defending throughout

Mistakes at the top level cost points

The subs were actually made after they went 2-1 up, although they were being planned after the equalizer.

But they weren't lucky. They were just organised. Teams like Liverpool,  Arsenal,  Man City, treat defending properly all over the pitch. Yes you have players that can defend and minimise space but they also have players that commit...energetically...throughout the game. They are winning tackles. I don't think Palmer played poorly, I just think that Liverpool defended properly against him, and others  and frankly our players are just not as committed as the opposition.

Palmer was honestly poor. I am not being harsh when I say this game and the one at Anfield last season, was his worst performances. He did not pose a threat and was easily outmuscled off the ball a few times.

The three subs straight after scoring were not needed.

Agreed. It looked like they were a pre designed set of subs. 50 mins, sub off lavia and james.  Its poor that he has to have them pre set, and not read the game. If they were not fit to play longer, then they shouldnt be starting.

I agree. we outplayed them for long parts of the game today. Our final ball was often disappointing and Cole had one of his poorest games. Understandably our defense looked ropy at times, especially missing 2 of our key starters. But overall there was plenty to be encouraged by.

Madueke posed problems, especially in the first half. Neto made a difference and put in an identical cross for Salah's assist for Jones but Nkunku missed it. I don't see how you are saying Palmer played good but Neto was poor. I think Neto did more than Palmer in the second half than Palmer did all game.

If you need to change out half the defence after 53 minutes when you are losing the game then not only did you select the wrong starting XI, but you are also making the wrong subs !

Not Maresca's best work today. Probably didn't watch enough Liverpool game videos during the international break ... 🙂

Agreed. He has yet to play well against Liverpool. I would have subbed him off rather than Madueke. That being said it was his excellent cross from the free kick at the end that should have led to an equalizer if Renato had kept his header down.

Just saw the penalty again. Never a peno. Curtis jumps after the ball is gone. Ridiculous that was not overturned by VAR.

I agree. Both penalties should have been overturned.

First 15/20 we were doing well breaking the lines, but produced nothing with it. After that, it was a pretty dull game to be honest. Liverpool never looked in any trouble and they always looked like causing us problems on the quick counter, something which we failed to do mostly because of the build up being too slow, or players making wrong decisions.

I thought that Madueke and Neto, when he came on, carried some danger. But it was too sparse, not constant.
My grip is how bad we are without the ball, the pressing is bad and that brings so much pressure on the defence, who ar not great either.

Navity and against a far more defensively composed side. Work in progress. Incredibly disappointed in Palmer.

Faired a lot better than I expected but we need a response against Newcastle.

Agree.

Game management by Liverpool was excellent. We are nowhere near having that experience but even with Palmer giving a 3 out of 10 performance we controlled a fair chunk of the game.

James was struggling I think and it will take him a bit of time.

Gusto got better but it’s not a position I’d want him in again anytime soon.

Lavia when fit is a nailed on starter for me. Some of his passing alone should see Enzo sitting on the bench and that’s before you take his work rate, poise, and tackling into account. I was very impressed by him. He’s nowhere near playing 90 minutes though.

None of the wingers who played today did themselves justice.

If Sanchez is our best keeper then I fancy my chances of getting a game.

Jackson was ok considering the 3 behind him weren’t great or the subs that replaced them.

Caicedo was immense I thought and easily our best player.

Pissed off that we lost that game as they were there for the taking. The first half hour was as close to how Maresca wants to play as we’ve seen so far.

But my point is, why is Palmer being mentioned as poor. People were saying Madueke played well. Did he? He never looked like he could sort his feet out half the time. Sancho was poor, Neto weak and ineffectual,  Jackson, other than the goal was non existent. But I'm not necessarily saying it against our players. We just do not work hard enough as a team, off the ball. We do not press and commit to challenging as a team. 35 yards from our own goal, 86 minutes plated and we are still having to fight tooth and nail to retain possession.  As a group and as individuals they just work harder than us.

I suppose that is the next level.

We loo, a lot like Arsenal I those early Arteta days. Not quite as committed and a bit of a glass jaw. Let's hope our trajectory is similar

They were there for the taking but we just kept making mistakes after mistake, both in defense and attack. You can see we're building something and once we get to a more mature stage, we can be winning these types of games. At the moment, that's too much for us.

Cole's worst game of the season so far, he could have had 3 today with the chances he had.

Our defence really needs sorting out.
