February 4, 201412 yr I think we should keep it so it forces the rest of us to eat our words. There are some pearls in there though, like this one: Cahill is an excellent young defender Luiz is a brilliant footballer The evidence ..... The Champions league final thats all ! what these young men need is guidance, not only by senior players but also a decent manager, I will add Ramires to that list.... that is exactly why I beleive Lamps and JT have roles at this club going forward. Jt had a brilliant mentor in Desailly and Lamps with Zola and Maka ... to my mind makes them the players they are today. it is my belief that Cahill has suffered from our style of football at the moment yes but more from the prolonged absence of JT on the field
February 4, 201412 yr I loved the way JT/Cahill/Iva kept hi-5'ing each other yesterday after every interception or tackle, clearly a great bond and spirit between the 3 of them that has taken our defence to the next level. Cahill's performance last night was superb and in my opinion he was the best player on the field, even JT would have been proud of such a performance.
February 4, 201412 yr Perhaps we should just call the thread "Cahill can be excellent if played with the right partner and in the right system" Last night he excelled. Against West Ham he didn't. Why? Because he didn't have to do the same job. He will never be as good as JT because he isn't as good a footballer. JT is massively underrated for his passing and overall technical ability on the ball. If you need someone to defend deep and put himself on the line then Cahill is your man. Just don't give him the ball to feet, especially if he's under a bit of pressure.
February 4, 201412 yr Which is odd cause he was actually a very good passer at Bolton and would push up the field whenever necessary.

Jt is better at picking out the long passes though. But in terms of getting the ball down and playing cahill is very good at it
February 4, 201412 yr Big Gary Cahill has been nothing short of top class this season. He had all the tools to be an elite CB and now it is starting to show, no doubt learning from the best has helped. He is a big threat in the air like Terry now looks like he has the passion to lead Chelsea. I think the fact that he feels Chelsea may also have a factor in this. I see him out there screaming and throwing his body at everything like the great JT does. One of my favourite players this season. Has anyone noticed what an complete Iron Titan the guy is? He is one of the few players where you can see his muscles pop out of his shirt. Absolute physical freak.
February 4, 201412 yr I wouldn't say he is necessarily bad with the ball at his feet. His biggest limitation is his pressing game. Much like JT. It's no surprise GC struggled in kamikaze games like Napoli under AVB or in a few of the Europe League games. But when he needs to put his back to the wall there are few better, but JT is one of them. A very good player but he needs to be employed in the correct system, like all players really. Luckily this Mourinho team and games like yesterday treat him to a tee.
February 4, 201412 yr Which is odd cause he was actually a very good passer at Bolton and would push up the field whenever necessary. In all fairness it's not hard to seem like a technically capable centre back when you are surrounded by Bolton players and are partnered with Zat Knight. I think Ethical's point still stands - at Bolton he was rarely in the position we were in against West Ham, in which we were camped outside their box with more or less every outfield player joining the attack.
February 4, 201412 yr Iv'e always thought he was good technically a big reason why i wanted us to buy him. These are all terrific goals that you don't see many centre backs trying let alone scoring http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96l9q_XSOV0
February 4, 201412 yr Author I started this thread last season and was rightly critical of Cahill. He made mistakes too regularly which cost us against some of the lesser sides, but in fairness, he put in some terrific performances in some of the big games - Arsenal at home comes to mind. Cahill's always shown that he can defend but what he's improved hugely this season is his consistency. He's hardly put a foot wrong and I'm delighted to have seen him develop. Gary seems like a really humble, dignified bloke and I see him as a potential captain once JT hangs up his boots. I guess Cahill's improvement exemplifies further Jose's managerial brilliance. Yet another player who's matured and refined his abilities under Mourinho.
February 4, 201412 yr Rumours he's on the verge of a 2 year extension and a pay rise, with the same for Azpilicueta. Much deserved, both faultless recently.
February 5, 201412 yr Apparently Cahill will get 100k a week which is too much,Azpi is reported to be on lower wages than Chalobah and Mceachran which i was surprised about. So Azpi definitely deserves a payrise.

At least we only paid like 6-7 mill for him, so he's not expensive all in all. And if he keeps playing like this, even 100k is not thrown away.

Is it too much though? Cahill is in the JT mold and is playing just as well as him at the moment. And of course young Azpi has somehow effortlessly displaced Ashley. I don't think any one saw that coming.
February 5, 201412 yr Cahill is getting alot of plaudits this season. I think Jose has really got the best out of him. It seemed though that at the start of the season, Jose wasnt sure of him but he has really secured his place. Hes not a top top player but hes a very good player. Hes been a great signing for us.

February 5, 201412 yr I dont think Cahill is world class no sorry, hes a very good defender one that i rate but i wouldn't say hes world class.
February 5, 201412 yr Where are these rumours coming from? http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/chelsea/10618069/Chelsea-captain-John-Terry-in-limbo-over-new-contract-as-club-consider-deals-for-Gary-Cahill-and-Cesar-Azpilicueta.html
March 24, 201412 yr Not much has been said lately about Cahill, alongside Terry he's been a rock in defence. Here's an interesting stat for you.. Chelsea have a 71% win rate when Cahill plays this season, compared to 57% when he hasn't.
March 24, 201412 yr I think he's been every bit as solid and reliable as JT this season. A great replacement for when JT hangs up his boots, just hope Zouma can step up to the mark for when this happens. Cahill was a great buy for us.
March 31, 201412 yr Looks like Gazza took the result on Saturday as hard as most of us; http://www.london24.com/sport/chelsea/mourinho_lifts_the_lid_on_cahill_conversation_after_palace_loss_1_3509493 I like that.
