Right, it's not like he's one of our longest-serving players or anything like that.

Any number from 1-11 is usually fair game anyway, and Willian is the closet thing we have to a number 10 at the moment.

This is a good thing, surely? He's stepping up and not shirking. Morata swapping to the '29' shirt was just an admission of defeat.

Of course, it really only counts if Willian does it on the pitch, but he's always seemed to me like a player that's thrived with added responsibility (2017 FA Cup Semi Final against Spurs springs to mind).

Pulisic. Willian is old news, why should he have one of the most important squad numbers.

Goodness, a meltdown over a number. As if that says anything about a player. There's obviously one exception - 23 needs to be withdrawn  - but ffs, squad numbers are only a device to identify players, not to attribute greatness or popularity.

Why change your squad number after 7 years? Bit weird if it’s true.

Wouldn't be my first choice, but I'm much more worried about Kante's knee than I am about Willian wearing the #10.  

While there's a certain section of supporters who are anti-Willian and will criticize anything he does, I would not have given it to him based on the classless post of the trophy over his coach.  I get that he didn't like Conte, but that lack of class and using a trophy picture to demonstrate that displeasure did make him seem an ideal squad member.

It certainly puts those CHO new 5 year deal, and the number 10 shirt in serious doubt. Unless he refused the number. 

Not too fussed though, Pulisic will get his 22 shirt, CHO will keep his 20, and they wont have to deal with the lazy hazard replacement narratives because of the number 10 shirt. 

Willian gets 12 months in it, before a new heir earns the shirt this season. 

I think this is more about Pulisic wanting the number 22 shirt number than Willian asking for the number 10 shirt. It was similar to Oscar getting the number 8 shirt the season after Lampard left and Drogba returned to take the number 11 from Oscar.

I totally agree firstly anyone around football knows numbers matter to players, it’s a type of prestige an honouree badge, it’s a type of recognition from the club, saying you can fill the shirt number associated with a club legend. 

Now as you said should go to CHO or pulasic, Willian has his own number he has worn it for years he had the change to make that a big number, and he has also been absolutely pants in recent seasons, he categorically can’t clear the first man on a corner he just is unable to do that, he f**ks up so many attack with a poor final ball and has no end product...why does he get Edens number?

Its not insignificant as some suggest I’m not in to superstitions or any of that bollox this is about what a number means to a player and the psychology behind it, like giving someone a famous warriors sword it’s basically saying we have trusted you to do what he did with it, there’s a weight of expectation.

Ultimately Willian will be gone next year (he will want more than one year extension while the club won't budge on one), I don't particularly agree with him getting it but I think him getting the 10 for a year is a sort of thankyou for his service to the club while we work out who out of CHO and Pulisic get it in the long run.

I don’t remember any fuss when an average right back in Bolorouz had the number 9 shirt.

Constantly sacking managers, sold our best player, landed us with a transfer ban, rewarding dud ageing players with new contracts. We can ignore all the bad because a little bit of good comes out of it. Open your eyes and recognise that stupid sh*t goes on at this club far too often.
