He wasn't actually very technically gifted (something that even at his very best stood out like a sore thump when he played with David Villa for his country) it was his burst of pace and athleticism that got him to the level he shown at Liverpool. When those went he needed his technical and tactical ability's to compete but they just weren't there, especially the latter. Edited April 25, 20206 yr by Argo

I don't know how others felt at those times but when we signed Shevchenko despite him being older at the time i thought and hoped he'd hit the ground running and was a bit surprised he couldn't produce (in hindsight it's easy to see his injury and playing through it at the world cup would be a problem). But I knew Torres was going to be a massive flop for us! And felt at the time us going for him was kneejerk and because he always scored against us and the two goals he got when he was having a crap season and already looked a shadow of himself from previous seasons, even with hindsight I don't think it can be overstated really how stupid a transfer it was at the time. I liked the interview too, looked like JT and Carragher got on well. JT said they were not aware of Torres's poor form and he scored two against us so still thought they were getting a top player. JT also acknowledged the Anfield effect suggesting the crowd plays a part and could be intimidating for some.

Good interview this - both sides respectful, Carragher with some intelligent questions as well, he comes across as quite sharp here. I really enjoy hearing insight and history from people who were actually there, getting the opinions of those who were behind the closed door. Edited April 27, 20206 yr by PloKoon13

In fairness he bagged quite a few against both us and Man Utd (and caused outright panic in their back 4 even when not scoring), the two top teams in the country at the time, so it would be unfair to say he didnt score against the big teams. All strikers score fewer goals against big teams than little teams, and the reasons for that are fairly obvious!

May 4, 20206 yr Jonathan Liew with an very interesting take on the Terry/Bridge/Perroncel fiasco: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/may/03/betrayal-and-bombast-surreal-story-terry-v-bridge-scandal Main points are: - Gutter media are scum; - Everyone seems to have forgotten how badly Perroncel got screwed by this (arf arf); - There's every chance nothing actually happened.
June 19, 20206 yr Just stumbled on this hard to believe it's 11 years ago and only the British press could have made such a big thing about a nothing story. 2009 Twitter was in its infancy and Leveson changed absolutely nothing and the Max Clifford clips are haunting. If anything the press are possibly worse now the interview with JK Rowling's abuser was such a low.
June 21, 20206 yr JT Mercilessly Trolling his Spurs friend, and in fact all Spurs fans, absolutely priceless https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/11911847/john-terry-mocks-spurs-video-chelsea-legend-trophy-cabinet/

July 30, 20205 yr That 'beacon' of football news has an interesting one for me today. Saying at school boy level Terry supported Utd like his Dad and his heroes were Ince and Cantona. When he was playing for Senrab he got invited to Utd and when he said Ince was his favourite player was sat next to Ince at the lunch table. Later on decided he wanted to play for Chelsea, his Dad tried to stop it yet his Mum signed the papers with him causing a family row: https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/12267159/chelsea-john-terry-man-utd-paul-ince-transfer/ @Bogga or @Stretford Ender is there any substance to this?

I have heard a similar story. There's no doubt that JT was a Utd fan as a kid.

It was fairly well known that JT was a United supporter when he was young. Later on, there was speculation that we were trying to sign him to replace Jaap Stam. I think JT has said since that it was his dad who was the United fan but I wonder if that isn't him being politic. Would have made a great pairing with Rio in the middle of our defence.
