July 15, 20188 yr Lots of bad feeling to tibo on here, but I don't really get why. He has a contract that we were happy to give him. He has performed pretty well for us. He has never appeared to have breached his contract. He has said many times he is happy at Chelsea. He has never said he is actively looking to leave. He has said he misses his kids and would like to be near to them, which is a pretty valid reason should he wish to go. As he moves into the last year of his contract, he is now re-evaluating his options, which would be pretty normal for anyone with a fixed term contract. We have previously offered X amount. Since then he has just won gk of the world cup and thinks (probably correctly given the current transfer market) that he is worth more than what we have offered. He has also said that he would show loyalty and fulfill his contract, and that probably we would not drop him (again, this is probably correct). So far, he has been pretty open, honest, transparent anout his situation and has been loyal to his current contract. I guess that doesn't fit the narrative and trend of having only heroes and villains, with no middle ground. Is there any other job in which an employee coming to the end of thier fixed term contract would be villified for looking for a wage rise , relocation and/or promotion?

July 15, 20188 yr Thing is, for all his arrogance, he’s actually not a very forward thinking goalkeeper and I think would struggle to get into Man City’s team as he is poor coming off his line, cannot use his feet and his distribution is poor. Modern keepers are expected to do all that and more. I wonder if Sarri actually wants him given he probably won’t be able to implement his style of play. Edited July 15, 20188 yr by JM7
July 15, 20188 yr I don't have a problem with whichever he decides to do. Sign, stay and go for free or be sold. From a club perspective if he does not sign we should try and sell him. I do not think if we can agree a deal with real he would refuse to go. If he did well he will want to play well for his last year, cause if he stinks the place up real won't want him and atletico don't need him. Given we bought him for peanuts comparatively from then to this market is not a huge deal. I think if we get real to offer 35mill that would be ok. Eden is the one we have to be super super careful of. We are not talking a small amount of money lost there. It is questionable if we would invest it wisely but 200mill invested well we could improve our side with a few players that perfectly with the sarri system. Or better he signs a new deal and he stays in our team. But if he wants to go we have to sell asap and hope the club invest well.

Although I have never disguised the fact that I don't overly rate Courtois in certain technical aspects of his game, I actually think that he is an eloquent and honourable guy and the post above by notnowjim is excellent and spot on the money. However, regardless of Courtois' character and loyalty to date, your point JM7 is also well made and I think nearer the truth. I can see Courtois moving on simply because Sarri will want somebody that suits his style of play. Whether Allison fits this mould remains to be seen. Pickford, this tournament has demonstrated that he is comfortable on the ball and can form part of an active defensive unit when in possession with the ball at their feet and I suspect this is the type of keeper that Sarri will be looking for. Also (thankfully) whilst Willy has demonstrated a willingness to receive the ball to his feet he has also demonstrated a kamikaze ability when in possession upon occasion which I also hope Sarri has taken on board. I do also like the suggestions other forum members have made of going English in this area to retain a homegrown quota.

If you're comfortable with this threat to leave every so often then that's fine. I'm not. Imo, he's more arrogant than Ronaldo and his talent level isn't even close to Ronaldo's. The fact that he's trying to f**k us over AND drag our best player with him in the process has done it for me. There is no assurance that even if he signs a new contract, he won't be threatening to leave in another 2 years. I've had enough. Good riddance. Shown the club respect? He's left his family and won us two Premier league titless, an FA cup and a league cup. Please show me how he is trying to f**k us over? He's said he might stay or he might not. No different from what Hazard has been saying. Why don't you hop into the Hazard thread and go call him a c**t too.

Kicked up a fuss about being no 1 keeper at Chelsea, so we’ve put Cech on the bench who has never complained. He then spoke to the board privately and we accepted and respected his wish. If the roles were reversed, Courtois would have caused a huge drama, mouthing off to the media saying how he’s better than Cech, he is one of the world’s best, mention Real a few times.

Lets be honest, Cech needed benching at the time as Courtois was the better player/long term plan. Its not like Courtois forced us to bench a player in his prime that was superior.
July 16, 20188 yr He is a footballer and most have no loyalty when it comes to their own ambitions. Tibo was a big reason we won those titles and cups. Yes he is outspoken and is flirting with a move to Madrid but not more so than Eden at the minute. I don't particularly like him as a person but as a player he should have the respect of our supporters for his contribution to our recent success. Won't be easy to replace either, the names we have been linked with are all far inferior goalkeepers.

A good sweeper goalkeeper can take several opposition players out of the game, see Ederson at City.
July 16, 20188 yr I think Thibaut's statements are usually taken out of context. He has said a lot of things that might upset a fan but he has been pretty honest. He has said what he thinks. He wants to go to Madrid because his kids are there. Very understandable. He also said he really enjoys London and Chelsea as well. You also have to take into consideration he is 25 or so. Young man. Petr is one of the nicest footballers out there as is Carlo. So maybe we expect our keepers to be nice. Thibaut is a very driven athlete. I don't think he is a bad guy at all.

To be honest I'd be happy with Butland, proven EPL player and should have an cheap relegation clause, plus he will take 1 of the HG spot. Alisson looked good in the past 12 months, but if we are going to blow 60M on a player, I prefer not to be a GK Butland is the type of keeper you look for to cover for Courtois, not replace him.
July 16, 20188 yr Courtois will be a Real Madrid player in 7-10 days. Chelsea refused Madrid’s offer of €35M but will accept €40-45M + variables. The idea is for Courtois to join the team after the USA Tour so he can start the UEFA Super Cup against Atlético on August 15. [defensa central]

We couldn't get him for cover a couple of seasons ago, not a chance now he's more established. Of course he's a downgrade in the short term, wouldn't be much given Courtois's from last season. If money is not issue, by Alisson, otherwise spend the money wisely.

Butland would be a massive step down from Courtois. Butland might not even have been one of the 10 best 'keepers in the Premier League last season, no way should we be looking to someone like that.
July 16, 20188 yr I think if we are going to compare Alisson to somebody, we should use Ederson. Courtois is a different style keeper from these guys. At the very minimum, I think we can all agree that Alisson is as good as Ederson. Man City just broke the league points record with Ederson starting most of the matches. We could certainly win the league with Alisson as our keeper, with our style of play changing.
July 16, 20188 yr 49 minutes ago, WhiteWall said: Depends what you're using as a measure I thought that was obvious. Our current keeper is miles better than the ones we have been linked to. That Brazil keeper looked awful at the world cup, he is poor aty coming out to catch crosses which Tibo is probably one of the best in the world at doing that.
July 16, 20188 yr My thoughts echo the views of @Fatty_Speeding & @Davey Baby Whilst a lot of what he has been said has been justified by the fact that it is factually correct, he didn't really need to say any of it. He could have done the club a favour, and kept it in house. I think what irks most people, is the fact that he has seemingly been unable to keep his thoughts to himself from the moment he joined. I have lost track of the amount of times he has let the media in on his desire to be somewhere else, and it gets tiresome to constantly read about it. On this occasion, I think his comments smacked of arrogance. Saying the club wouldn't drop him makes him looks like a bit of a prick in my opinion. The bit that I found most unprofessional was his reference to Hazards situation. He may want to constantly pipe up about his own contract and feel that is his prerogative, but to be sticking his beak into what Hazard might be doing next season (as if he has any sort of say in it) is well over the line. I don't care if he was joking or not, I think he should grow up. Nobody knows what negotiations may/may not be going on with Madrid, but any perspective deals could be huge, potentially record breaking for the club, and we need all the leverage we can get. Basically, he last thing we need is a loose lipped Courtois issuing his ultimatums for what Hazard may be doing next season, to the media.
July 16, 20188 yr Courtois have a claim for being the best goalkeeper in the world. Anyone we could buy is a huge step down. Including Allison but he might still be the best option. Now if you have to go all the way down to Butlands level to replace him, then you are in big trouble.

I wouldn't be surprised if Courtois ends up in Italy, not many big teams in Madrid.
