I wish people would stop quoting and replying to cuppat, as then I see his posts. Have a look at his profile and see from his last number of posts that he is a total wum and not a Chelsea supporter.

I thought I'll glimpse at his profile and you're on to something, definitely suspect, constantly negative and putting the team down.

SFL is now just assessing where to tweak the team, be very interesting to see who he brings in, the standards he'll want , and realises what a player needs to be a winner, i think he'd be an incredible task master, just because of the playing standards he set.

I think Lampard has pretty much figured out his team formation when playing a team outside the top 6, 4-2-3-1 with rotation between Kante Jorg & Kova for the 2 midfield roles and Mount, Pulisic, Willian and CHO rotating for the 3 attacking mid roles.

However he still needs to establish what the best option is when playing against the better teams, whether he can continue with the same formation or solidify the midfield with 4-3-3.

Are we playing 4-2-3-1? It's looking very much like Mason is playing LCM as opposed to number 10 lately.

I'd say it's somewhere in between 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 when Mount plays at LCM - Real Madrid played the same way a few years ago with Isco as the LCM during the build up but at #10 during the attacking phase. Could be a role ideally suited for RLC... or Jack Grealish :laugh2:

I think we also played 4-1-4-1 against Brighton and Grimsby??

I'll echo what I said at the weekend, Lampard can't start Jorginho, Kovacic and Kante together, one of them has to be left out. Mount is needed for his pressing, Kante doesn't have the attacking instincts to play that role effectively for a whole season, it also has a negative affect on his defensive game too. Kante played like an attacking midfielder tonight and he just doesn't suit that role, he made many poor decisions that attacking midfielders shouldn't be making. In this role, Kante is half the player. He is at his best when he is playing in Kovacic's position and playing box to box.

We had a winning formula before the changes, we were looking balanced, now we look like we are a bit all over the place. Jorginho, Kovacic and Kante should be competing for two spots, Mount should be the one playing in the more advanced position.

That's what I thought before the Man City game. Kovacic is clearly the player that is the worst of the three, but since he's doing really well overall and since Lampard is looking to sub off Jorghy in the end of every game now, I think we should really go back to 4 2 3 1 and start with Kante, Kovacic and Mount while Jorghy is on the bench, and see what happens.

Problem for Frank is his winning formula was mostly without Kante, and then he came back from injury and now you have an undroppable world class player to squeeze in. The question is who would be happy to sit on the bench?

If we concede in the last few minutes, we're out of the CL. A draw was all we needed. We got away with one. Very very lucky indeed. Committing bodies forward was suicidal. We're way too open. No solidity at all. Frank has a lot to learn.

Dave was overlapping Reece in the 96th minute, running to the byline. Exciting attacking football is one thing, but this is poor management from Frank. We have to be more pragmatic. 15 chances conceded in that second half. We have absolutely no idea how to manage a game. Against City, we were the better team , playing great football, a goal up, taking the game to them, but we're soft, we're easy to score against, they run up the other end and score two, no bother at all.

We really need to sort it out. A crucial game like tonight, we need to see out the last few minutes, we couldn't have been more open if we tried, and the worrying thing, Frank doesn't know how to change it.

We're a third into the season now. It's time to learn our lessons, and there's been lots of them.

It's a really hard choice. I don't know who I would go with because I am a fan of all 3 this season. Jorginho and Kovacic are like different players, and we all know how good Kante is when he plays box to box. You can't really drop Kovacic with his current form and Jorginho dictates our play, but at the same time, Kante is needed because we need that defensive shield. Rotating them could also be damaging because they could end up losing their momentum.

You might be right, but the sample of games we've played with them 3 isn't fair, City away and a Valencia away, two very hard games. CL away games are a different breed.

But I fear you might be right still, thisi s going to get even harder when RLC comes back.

Frank needs to sign (and play) specific type of players if he wants to do a wingback system.

With unsuitable personnel like tonight it just looks like a flat back five.I don't think any of our fullbacks suit wingback position, not even James (RCB is his niche in that formation).

Would benching Kepa make things worse at this point? Or do we stand by him and let him recover his form and show his potential?

I'm not sure if it's a lack of confidence or over confidence with Kepa, with the continious mistakes he's making you would say confidence but when you look at it it's mistakes he's making that you could boil down to over confidence, overplaying it and trying to make clever passes. That Cup final also pretty much solidified him as an ego player... I really can't tell what would be the right move at the moment.

Praying these mistakes get put to bed and it stops. I remember De Gea going through this stage when he was a young lad at United, he a bit younger than Kepa but he was constantly making errors in his first season, he looked abysmal. I think I remember one game against Spurs that Spurs's tactic was to shoot from range at any given moment to cause De Gea problems because he was that mistake prone at the time, and now nobody ever thinks about those days because for the last 5 years or so he has been a fantastic keeper for United.

Frank has some big decisions to make, luckily we are playing West Ham this weekend and they look god awful lately.

Agree with that Davey. Though we needed to win today imo. Second in the group is a ticket to a last sixteen KO to PSG, Juve, Barca or Bayern.

I'd take that over the EL slogfest death by 100 games

If we win the group (by winning Lille and Ajax not winning) we have a chance to go last 8. Would be massive achievement. If we end up 2nd in the group it is bye bye with big certainty. I'd take that. Love those massive CL ties. Worst situation is 3rd where we travel to somewhere in Romania on a thursday and try to scrape a win.

Last night reminded me if the leicester game, when we were just getting countered to death, and looked on our arse.

It is very difficult to put blame on the centre backs when they get left so exposed.

Really strange to see us going so gung ho late in, when a defeat wouldve knocked us out.

The pressing was terrible last night, jorginho needs to stop wasting energy charging down the opposition centre backs whenever he loses the ball, it leaves us wide open. Kovacic and Kante get caught doing it aswell, and its no wonder we look knackered in the closing stages.

This doesnt seem as much of a problem when mount plays, as he presses high, and jorginho and kovacic generally hold their positions.

Lampard has some tough decisions to make, the defence has been okay, but is it good enough to compete for titles long term?

In midfield, the balance needs to be addressed, and its hard to leave any of 4 out now, plus we have RLC to come back into the equation.

The forwards have generally done okay, but i still feel we need some more quality in attack, which would help relieve some pressure from the defence and midfield.

Then there is Kepa, who has 18 months to start looking like a £70m goalkeeper, or i think he we be out the door personally.

Not all doom and gloom, still in a healthy position in both the league and europe, just some food for thought going into the busy xmas period which will make or break our season.
