Throwback! I remember this game well as soon as the final whistle blew, my wife phoned me to say my son being born and to come to the hospital. I soon forgot about losing!

Madness how we let Tibo play against us. We were 45 mins from a CL final.

They still are a cracking side that know the dark arts very well. Unlike the easy draws Liverpool and City got we actually have to earn our place in the next round.

I would still make Atletico favorites with them having the option of away goals tonight and with their experience.

------------Mendy-------------

Azpi - Christiansen - Rudinger

CHO -- Kova - Kante - Alonso

---Havertz --------- Werner---

 ---------- Giroud-------------

I expect Chelsea to play a lot of possession football, pick and choose their chances but otherwise try to play keep-away.

For me the wingbacks is the doubt, the rest of the team really picks itself.

If we choose Alonso over Chilwell on the left, then maybe we would want James on the right since we’ll need his defensive capacity as Alonso can’t really defend that well or has any pace to track back. If Chilwell plays, then maybe CHO should play to give us more attacking options. I wonder what Tuchel will decide, but if CHO and Alonso play, wouldn’t we be more vulnerable defensively?

Actually UEFA f**ked us and said we couldnt stop Courtois from playing against us. We should have won the game but had Mikel and Lampard suspended for the second leg hence Luiz playing in midfield. Kinda sounds like Jorginho and Mount missing.

Man, I forgot how hard José bottled that game. I'm sure there's a whole heap of context I can't remember (plus the original match thread is locked so I can't check) but still... what a disappointment that was. Ah well, at least we mugged off Liverpool.

Not sure whether I'm more offended by the Mikel/Jorginho comparison or the Luiz/Kanté one. Either way... BOOO!

Have got in the essential supplies i.e. a few bottled beers for tonight's game. Beers from local small breweries. so good to help nearby small businesses.

If I drink all the beers during the game will have to drink whisky afterwards to celebrate.

Surprised at how time has affected my memory of this game (also - f**k off was this nearly 12 years ago):

I certainly remembered it as the game which imprinted Agüero on the consciousness of English (or at least Chelsea) fans, but I could have sworn he pegged us back from 2-0 up. (Also since when did he take free kicks?)

Edit: Plus the shirts are baggier than I remember...

We played Azpi as a LM and David Luiz as a CDM in that match... had 6 freaking defenders. Portuguese Tony Pulis in full affect for that match

I didnt even peep  the Kante /Luiz comparison good job bringing that up. But to be honest mikel and Jorginho are quite similar as in they helpgive balamce to the team, recycle the play and play safe passes without offering assist or goals

Looking into this game a little more there are a few funny things I noticed/remembered/looked up:

- The two goalkeepers in Atlético's matchday squad were Sergio Asenjo and David De Gea - they were 20 and 19 respectively.

- The player subbed off for Agüero was Liverpool legend Florent Sinama-Pongolle.

- It's odd thinking about Reyes.

- Atlético went on to beat Roy Hodgson's Fulham in the Europa League final that season.

@Mod Stark - can you make sure his human rights are roundly violated when you ban him please?

Devilishly Tricky Tie tonight, Simeone might be an Asshole but he's also a shrewd operator.

Im not an Alonso Fan, but he holds that shape better and Chilwell has been Piss Poor of late, Also feel its not going to be a night for passengers, Hence no Pulisic or Ziyech
