UEFA is preparing a counterattack on the Super League. They are working with an investment fund to come up with a new #UCL  that would have a starting budget of €4.5BN, which could go up to €7BN.

Also being reported by the Times. Have they called UEFAs bluff?

I doubt the key players here will like the counter because that money presumably still gets shared and any competition still requires some qualification.

Supposedly one of the board members of one of the 12 anonymously said it can all be undone if UEFA comes to their terms and make the changes they want and that they have done it the way they have done it because UEFA will not listen to them. They also said it is mostly about the extra turn over and if UEFA dont agree they are going to do it anyway. Are UEFA are talking about making these changes will it all blow over the next couple of days? Time will tell

Yeah feels abit like that with UEFA saying it’s not too late. The American owners might not like the non-removal of relegation but they might be satisfied with more money and a greater cut of the pie. They are money driven after all.

Depends. They want to eat their cake and have it too. They certainly don't appreciate the foul cry right now: lots of negative press, lots of uncertainties and more important: lots of potentially lost customers.

If UEFA can give them that much more revenue, by shafting smaller teams and suddenly being able to get better deals, while somehow fiddle in a way to give them some sort of wild-card to some extent I don't think they necessarily aren't interested. They'd get money by "merit" (lol) and not becaue they did exceptionally well during the turney.

It's gonna be a farce one way or another.

It took a long time to build up the EPL from the dark ages of the 70s/80s, the billionaire owners of the six surely cannot be allowed to just walk of with the jewels in the crown, I'm no Tory but Boris Johnson will win the next election if he stops it happening.

Avram Grant talking a load of sense to BBC news. It's all on the BBC super league thread you have to scroll down a bit to find the first part of the interview. Of course the been couldn't put it all up in one go. But interesting to get a bit of inside thought about how a former chelsea manager would of approached it with Roman

I honestly think fans are going too far with this "I'm going to stop supporting my club and going local bs". First of all its not like your club is facing all the criticism alone. 12 of the biggest clubs fanbases are in the same boat.

Should've stopped supporting your club (Chelsea in our case), the moment Uefa gave us a tiny allocation in Baku with the club still taking part for a corrupt organisation.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not fully behind this Super League, I honestly do not care for other clubs either, only my own although I do understand what is not ethical. I just cannot stand Uefa and at the end of the day whatever happens, the fans don't benefit.

It's all in the timing, to do this on the eve of the CL semi-finals, just as we reach the culmination of UEFA's blue ribbon event, if the ESL wanted to get maximum affect from this announcement, this is the time of the season to do it, threatening to take 3 of the last 4 teams out of the CL through being banned gets maximum affect.

They don't go too far. Its all about the the identity of the sport. ESL is nothing more than American crap. I'm tired of this American style and fashion in every aspect of life-sports, music, politics, thinking and in society and to be pushed in people heads by force

You are entitled to your opinion and nobody is stopping fans from continuing to cheer on Chelsea. However equally other fans are entitled to what they want too. I have zero interest in watching us in an invitational tournament with no qualification, unless it is part of pre-season. So I will not be watching us in this new competition. I am pretty sure I am not alone on that front. You are right that football has been gradually going in this direction for many years. This is just a step too far for many I think.

I'm not sure I could follow Chelsea into a closed super league and I'm an American accustomed to closed leagues.

But to me the big difference is that there are 32 NFL teams and there is no question they are the best american football teams in the country.  There are no teams that exist outside of the NFL in which anyone could even imagine being competitive with an NFL team.

That's not true in Europe.  Leicester City, West Ham, Everton, Leeds they all exist.  I mean it wasn't that long ago that we watched West Brom score 5 goals against Chelsea.

It's not like these 6 teams are always the top 6 teams in the EPL and they never lose to any team other than another big 6 team.  That isn't the reality here.   The best American comparison would be if the most popular NFL clubs formed their own playoffs and just decided they where in it every year no matter what their record was.

Because of the rumours that Chelsea and city might be the first teams to walk, new rumours are coming out that there is a supposed contract that prevents any of the 12 from leaving. Guess the clubs shot themselves in the foot.

I get a cooling off period on my car insurance and my broadband, but they don't have the equivalent in something like this ? We should sack and sue our legal team immediately if that is the case ...

Now Marina is proper angry, being called a gentleman :shok: What century is this guy living in?

Still, :beg:  please say this is just a ploy to wring more money out of the CL and then gracefully drop the plan like a red-hot brick?

I think maybe you miss the point. First off, the club realistically had no option but to take part in competitions run by UEFA, but could quite easily have turned down the invitation to join the Super League.

Secondly there’s the whole issue of elitism, which again is purely down to finance. I’m no fan of UEFA either. Just for example, I’d love a return to an old fashioned European Cup, along with the re-introduction of the Cup Winners Cup. But that won’t happen. As it stands, it’s feasible for any Premier League team to qualify for the Champions League, even more so for the Europa League, but the proposed (fingers crossed the f**king thing still fails to materialise) is a breakaway, not just from UEFA, but from the Premier League. None of the “lesser” clubs have got an earthly of getting in - unless they happen to be picked up by a mega rich benefactor, as may be happening with Newcastle. In which they too will then  qualify for Super League membership, on purely financial grounds.

And what the hell has “facing criticism” got to do with anything? Is it supposed to be some form of consolation that the other eleven founder members are being slagged off left right and centre? Sorry but that’s utter sh*te. If popularity is what you want, then find someone else to support. We’ve never been media darlings, seldom if ever been flavour of the month.

As I wrote earlier in this thread, the very idea of a Super League is a massive step too far for me. If we’re involved, I’ll be turning my back on the club.

I won’t be watching the Qatar World Cup either.

Slightly off topic but he's got in the bag anyway (and if there's any doubt they'll stick flavour of month Sunak in instead).

The vaccine roll out combined with Kier's awful opposition has seen to that.

I know im in the minority but I would watch Chelsea in any League or competition, and regardless of the team or venue*. Football isnt for the fans it probably used to be back in the 70's,

its business now. It has been since 1992 we are customers, albeit loyal customers but the game has moved on.

That said i think with all the trouble regarding the ESL, Uefa,  Fifa & Premier League might have to up their game in terms of their offering to the fans. There seem to be a number of individuals who are terrified, distraught maybe even devastated by a new league i cant help feeling they are heavily invested personally/financially in the current set up.

There's a lot of greedy people and organisations about and not just the ESL.

The only genuine issue for me is the lack of qualification/ relegation/promotion but surely thats not insurmountable.

Hey Ho seems to me the fans are being used by all to fight their fight. The Media, Premier League, Sky and so on are probably worried for their jobs.

* I suffer Burnley Brighton Sheffield Utd and Co at present hardly entertainment waiting for us to break down a 10 man defensive wall.

I was more upset when Ken Bates put up electric fences and started a membership scheme.
