There is a good solution here, or at least one that sounds good to me given that I would definitely like us to sign De Jong.

• We buy him for a reasonable fee, just large enough to prevent other potential suitors getting involved.
• We offer him an attractive contract befitting his status, albeit not one matching the ludicrous terms he's on now.
• He defers the difference between his Chelsea contract and what the remainder of his Barca deal would have paid him,
• He helps the Catalans by deferring that payment until after he retires. He doesn't actually need the money now.
• Barca pay him that money, plus compound interest at inflation plus 1%, in a lump sum in ten years or so.
• Highly paid players receive sophisticated financial advice. That advice will include the suggestion that they keep some portion of their wealth as cash in a bank. FDJ could treat this deferral as the cash part of his portfolio. Inflation plus 1% is a brilliant return for what is a rock solid cash investment.

Also, pique is married to Shakira, who is probably worth more than he is. They're getting divorced anyway so giving up half of his paycheck is really only like giving up a quarter. Money means nothing to him anymore, he's going to hit the divorce lottery.

Assuming we want Auba I would like Todd to approach it this way.

Get De Jong personally agreement, don't complete deal till after the weekend, speak th Christensen and Kessie get them to rip up their deals and join us on frees, tell Barca we will pay them 80mill euros for De Jong only if they accept Alonso at 15mill euros part exchange and grant Auba free transfer to us.

That would flesh out the squad nicely.

Who are we going to offload if we sign him? I don't see Jorginho or Kante moving, Kovacic is a player we need to keep, so most likely we will send Gallagher on loan ( who offers the goal threat none others have). We should drag this on as long as it takes, sign Auba now if that's Tuchel's wish, leverage the mess at Barca to drive De Jong's price down

Barcelona's financial decisions remind me very much of my own as a 19yr old.

If we do sign him, I really hope the club have spoken to him and made made sure he wants to play her and commit. If we need to sell him because he hasn’t settled, we’re not getting much return on £70m.
