Raheem Sterling signs for Chelsea

He's only our hope in attack to score.. unfortunately our tactics and current form of the attackers is far away from being top.

He's the player that needs to play every game, and not on LWB on defensive position, LW as much as possible.

Seemed to me he's hugging LW/LWB in attack but staying LW in defence. Think Potter did similar with Trossard at Brighton.

Didn't like him at wingback, he spent too much of the game nowhere near the goal. He's out best attacker, he should be up top.

Sterling's been one of the few positives of the season so far.

Cannot solely rely on him to save us every time, but he's been a good acquisition for the club.

Potter is doing pretty well but he needs to stop tinkering with Sterling. He's now been played at LWB, RWB, LW, RW, Striker by Potter and he's lost his form completely because of it. No one would perform well under those circumstances so no blaming Raheem but Potter is making a mess of it.

Hope potter doesn't play him as a WB again. While this might sound like an excuse Pulisic fans tend to make for him, it actually makes sense for Sterling since his form has dropped since Potter started changing his position with every game.

Gee...

None of our attacking wingers should be playing there. None of them have any defensive inkling and modt importanly cant tackle. Saying that though Sterling was quite bad even upfront today. Had a few chances at the end. When Auba came off, sterling really should of come off for Broja.

Agreed. Nice to see someone else finally seeing the light.

Sterling’s form under him is concerning though, seems to have tailed off after his good form under Tuchel. I think he needs to play him close to the No 9, not wide as it exposes his lack of technical skills.

Agree with the general consensus Raheem shouldn't be in midfield when we play a back 3. I say midfield instead of wing back because that's what it is. There is a common misconception around that position in football.

The key difference is a 3atb vs a 5atb, if we were playing a 541 and not a 3421/343 then  you could count Sterling's position today as rwb, however since it was 3atb it is right mid. Not right wing which would be slightly further forward and not right wing back which would be slightly further back. This is evidenced by our line up when we won the ucl in 2021 we usually played a 3421 but for that game we lined up 541 James and Chilwell actually played as wing backs rather than right and left mids.

It might sound like semantics but there really is a big difference and it explains why TT, Conte and Potter will play attackers in those position when fielding a back 3. In a back 3 the players on the left and right provide the width ofc and are tasked with attacking and defending. Players like Raheem can play left and right mid comfortably but this isn't where they will influence the game the most. When moved further forward into a modern winger position that is when he plays his best football.

Didn't take long for him to look like all our other attackers.

Why City were happy to let him go. 1 great chance, 1 sitter, 1 very good chance, all executed so so poorly.

But when we were pushed back like today he essentially became a fullback. Hence why you saw him as a defender in our own box on multiple occassions.

It was a baffling decision that Potter thankfully got away with.

My problem with this is that I have never rated Sterling defensively.  If you watch him closely he will usually bottle out of defensive tackling. He won't commit, never has. In this position,  even if its in a midfield formation he will need to defend which isn't his strong point.

I also don't think he is brilliant on the ball, his passing isn't good and often trips over the ball.

What I think he is good at is being the overload, the spare man, the guy at the back post finishing things off. If we are able to use him like this then he could post figures similar to those under Pep. At the moment I am not sure Potter knows how to shoehorn him in to his systems. It's only because so many of the other options are so poor that Sterling has to be on the pitch somewhere

This...right...here.

Keown on MotD last night said that 'Sterling has been quite outstanding under Potter*'.

Proof that pundits don't pay attention when watching us.

*He said the same about Mount, but there is at least some truth in that.

Keown's finished, I can never take him seriously again after he said Peter Osgood's nickname was 'The Kite' because he would hang in the air like a kite 😐

Sterling should be our most advanced player when we’re defending, like Salah is for Liverpool, forget tracking back, he defends in the opposition third, Sterling Mount Kai and Gallagher are all great workers off the ball in the oppositions face and constant, that’s what I liked about Timo…… and despised about Lukaku.
