Will he and Fofana work as a CB pairing tho?

What I'd like to know is whether he's actually a better prospect for LCB than Levi Colwill  ...

Any CB that is spectacular on the ball will always be deemed higher value. 

As far as defensively, not sure who is better. Gvardiol is likely the Silva replacement at sweeper and CB.

I am not sure about this to be honest.

Colwill has a lot of potential, no getting away from that, but we were going to let him go permanently and did an about face last minute to get a loan deal done. Since then he has only featured fleetingly for Brighton. The lower leagues are full of coulda, woulda, shoulda's that had great potential but never realised it.

Gvardiol on the other hand is playing week in week out, competing on the domestic and european stage. He has been feted by some of the best teams in Europe and we ourselves went in heavily for him.

Notwithstanding any of these points with Fofana's imjury and the attrition taht Silva and possibly Kouli will feel during the season, we should probably be looking at both players 

Matt Law in the London is Blue Podcast stated that we are still trying to bring in Gvardiol. Either as a double deal with Nkunku or separate. 

Nkunku deal almost complete according to Romano.

As much as I like him I think this is one we should leave with everything else that needs to be done.

Colwill can slot straight into that area in my opinion.

I don't think Leipzig do two big sales at once. They haven't until now.

I really hope a deal can be done, even if we pay and they keep him until the summer.

Best defensive performance I've seen all tournament, he looks a top player already at 20 years old.

Get him now please.

We will get colwill back next season and we still want to sign another CB 🤪🤪

Silva will likely leave at the end of the season. His original reasons for joining us was to win the Champions League and play for Brazil in one more world cup, he's done both now. I wouldn't be surprised if he returns to Brazil to finish his career, like he intended to do. I'm all for keeping him here if he wants to stay, but I can't see it happening.

I don't rate Koulibaly. I think his legs have gone and he is a disaster up against players that are nimble. He will need replacing much sooner than we would have liked. If we bring in Gvardiol, I wouldn't even be bothered if he was sold before next season starts, even more so if Colwill is as good as everybody is saying he is.

Fofana still has everything to prove for me, I don't even rate him higher than Chalobah right now. He may have a higher ceiling than Chalobah, but at this moment, he's still all potential.

Cucurella has been terrible at CB, I don't want him playing there anymore to be honest and James should be playing every game RB/WB.

 

Fofana, Gvardiol, Chalobah, Colwill. There is great potential in that.

None of them are on a par with gvardiol based on that performance he gave yesterday. (Discounting Silva as the expiry date on him).

A defender who defends first and foremost, we should throw everything we have to get him.

My worry is that would be too young a combo. Even if i feel three of them have a world class ceiling.

Clearly he is interested, we should make this a priority. Him, Colwill, Fofana and Chalobah sets us up for a long, long time at CB.

Cucu - koula - Reece 

I put Reece there because if you play Reece as rwb for whole season, he will get injured again. 

Cucu is much better as lcb than lwb. 

Back 4

Colwill - Fofanan

Chalo - Koula

Even if you don't rate koula, for 4th CB he is more than good enough. Playing CB is not taxing. Unless you are injured you can play all the time. 

Rather than spending money on Gvardiol, spend the money on proper midfield and you will suddenly think everyone looks better.

You wouldn't rule out both though would you Bob? I certainly agree that upgrading our midfield upgrades the entire team, but I really like Gvardiol, who doesn't? 🙂 If we can get him, then doing so is a priority for me. Indeed, based on a comment by a BBC commentator a couple of months ago, I'm clinging to the hope that Gvardiol to Chelsea may already be done.

Then that is a big problem since, in my opinion anyway, he hasn't been great at either.

I watch Gvardiol only twice in this wc and he looks very good. But our CB are fine, it will be at most minor improvement. 

Everyone will say that Silva has been our best signing which I completely agree with but the improvements from Chris to Silva is very minor. When Silva was injured for a while, I don't feel much different when Chris was playing. 

Then you compare it to the improvement from Kepa to mendy in mendy first season. It is not even close. Yes mendy has been awol since last season but in his first season, it change our team completely. We are talking about mendy here not cech or cortouis. 

If we keep doing this minor improvement on one position every season, we will go nowhere as a team. 

About cucu, yes he hasn't look good in either. But his profile is quite similar to azpi who is another rb/RCB type of player rather than a rwb

Sounds good, but then I remember I used to say the same thing about the "new young guns" Pulisic, CHO and so on...

But either way once our key players leave, meaning Thiago Silva, Kante, Jorginho... We won't be the same team anymore and then anyone that can help out the injury prone Fofana and an older Koulibaly is welcomed.

Croatia has produced some pretty good center backs but nobody close to this kid. He plays like he’s in his prime already. He made so many key interventions against Belgium then carry’s the ball forward like a attacking mid.
