Graham Potter (Now Sacked ) - *Official* New (Now Old) Chelsea Manager

Featured Replies

I believe Potter's biggest issue is his lack of charisma. It is not just the fact that we have been used to managers being sacked, but everytime that happened, the new manager was always someone who had something interesting or "special" about him. Jose was Jose, Frank was Frank. Antonio Conte was this energetic crazy guy, Sarri was this avid smoker who everyone expected to come and make Chelsea play like prime Barcelona, while Tuchel always knew how to say the right things during his speeches.

Now we have Potter, this regular guy who talks like a therapist and who is MAYBE a bit too calm compared to what we were used to. He never seems to be bothered about the mess that we are in and it is hard for some of the fans to trust what he is doing, as we cannot see any passion or anger coming out of him. Not even during the games. So yeah, I can see why there are so many people who are asking for his head already. Yet, I do not think that is fair.

We need to understand that there is a new culture that this club is trying to develop. We need to understand that it takes time. We need to remember that only a few months ago there were talks about us going into administration! People are complaining about Boehly and Co. not having a clearer vision, but it is difficult to have things put into place considering the nature of the takeover. Also, we need to remember that these guys have not inherited the culture at Manchester City or Bayern. We, as a club, were in a big mess recruitment-wise and wage-wise.

Like it or not, it takes time. We will keep on suffering for a while and we need to accept that. But it will not last forever. Better times are coming. I personally trust Potter and I cannot wait to see what players we sign in the January window. I am not sure if we will make top 4 this season, but again, when the sanctions were imposed I wasn't 100% sure that we will make it TO this season. I am also sure that he is inteligent enough to adapt to his new job and to get better at communicating with the fans. Or maybe we will get better at understanding that sometimes jazz sounds better than heavy metal.

I just discovered a new genre fusion, thanks, it's pretty dam good.

Potter is in because he has been shown to be able to build and improve teams. Whilst people say he never achieved anything, that is absolute nonsense.

Ostersund were a 4th division Norwegian side when he took over. He eventually got that club promoted to their top division for the first time in history and won the cup for the first time in history. He also took them into the Europa League, getting them through qualification and then they even got through the group. They were eventually knocked out by Arsenal, but even then Ostersund beat them in one leg. The jump was enormous since he took over.

Are people expecting him to win the Europa League with Ostersund for it to be considered an achievement? That would arguably be the best managerial achievement of all time if he managed that - that isn't high expectations; that is just stupid.

Brighton - they were a defensive side when he took over, fighting relegation. They only looked to try and concede as few goals as possible and to counter-attack, hoping to knab a goal. That is a far cry away from what they are now. They have been turned into one of the better possession teams in the league; they are considered one of the toughest matches for the top six, regularly taking points from them. This season was looking incredibly positive under him. They had come on leaps and bounds and have only been a consistent goal scorer away from challenging the Europa League positions last season.

In the end, it takes time. You cannot build a side if you haven't had an opportunity to build.

Arteta was given time, and it is proving to be the right decision. I know people will use hindsight now to say that is different to Potter's circumstances, but it is not. Remember when they got trashed by newly-promoted Brentford? Remember how they were only 10th in the form table at the end of last season? Don't kid yourself, there was massive pressure and calls to sack him. The owners were right to ignore them.

Ostersund have subsequently been relegated back to the second division and sit mid table since Potter left if i'm not mistaken? Shows what a fantastic job he did to get them playing so well and overachieving.

This is a great post btw.

Would rather stab my eyes with a blunt pencil than listen to that crap. Personal opinion.

Agreed. I'm still to be sold he's the right man for this job but the rewriting of his career upto joining us is scandalous.

Brighton fans are going to love us even more if reports are true that Paul Winstanley is already lining up a huge amount of cash to head back to the seaside in exchange for Trossard, Sanchez and Cacideo.

I’m all for giving him until the end of next season, depending on wether we see an improvement on the football we’re seeing. But, a majority of the match going fans I’ve talked to are not convinced by his appointment and are getting edgy with the latest matches. It’s got to improve a lot after the WC to win them over.

I agree, much much better than your signature "wE doN't wiN LeAguE titLes siNcE JorGinHo jOined sO hE uSelEesS"

I hope with all these recruitment people coming on someone between them will advise Todd and Potter that no we cannot in fact leave our midfield down to the ever broken Kante, Kovacic and the slowing down Jorginho.

All the forwards and wingers and defenders linked don't me a darn thing if we leave our midfield as it is.

Good and well thought out post but do we have to be in relegation form for Potter to then make us play well?

Klopp needed Mane, Salah and Van Dijk to finally complete his gameplan but even before that, it was clear what his gameplan is. Same can be said for Pep,  Carlo etc2.

I'm not asking for amazing football from the off but 2 months in, there isn't even a consistent formation.

Actual we have shown that as long as we have james and chilwell we can be competitive even with trash midfield

Unfortunately we once again don't have James and Chilly also we don't have Kante , so I agree that the midfield is the area that needs most attention at the moment

Another pointless comment, please don't waste my time replying unless it's about Chelsea related matters.
