Mykhailo Mudryk signs for Chelsea

Let’s be honest, he was shocking last night. It may have been down to him having the “plague”, who knows but he avoided every 50/50 and looked completely lost. It’s early days, he’s young and new to the PL, so I’ll give him time because against Liverpool he was really good. But last night, it was as if we were playing with 10 men (actually, with Ziyech and Havertz and Mount, we were like 7 players against 11).

Could be he was sick, could be he has barely kicked a ball in months with the Ukraine league season break, could be Mount hugged the left side and gave him no space. Or all 3!

Stupid decision by Potter starting this guy with him having spent the weak with illness, now as evidenced above resulting in supporters already questioning his quality.

I am way more of a supporter of Pep and partly Klopp’s way of integrating new players. Let them get to know their teammates and their new home before throwing them out in the deep end.

Imagine the out cry on here. If Potter had left him out last night and we got the same result.

SKY TV interviewer: No Mudryk in your line up tonight Graham. That surprised a lot of people after his impact against Liverpool. What was the reason?

GP: Well, earlier in the week he had a cold. So I thought we had better leave him out.

Cut to camera shot of Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville laughing.

Damned if you do. Damned if you don't was never more fitting.

I don't find this plausible. If he said he wasn't fit to start that would have been (rightly) accepted.

I can't think of one occasion ever where a manager hasn't started a player due to illness and received criticism for not starting him.

It isn't a case of damned if you do and damned if you don't. In hindsight he probably shouldn't have started him. In isolation it isn't a huge deal, but it does go down as another small mistake made. The problem is they are adding up.

If he was sick, whether he was a 80M signing or 8 dollar signing he shouldn't have started. This is just another little snapshot of the mess we are in, not getting results, players not in form, and manager juggle a bunch of last minute signing heading into game day. I hope both Mudryk and Chiwell be match fit or at least play a cameo together, having Cucurella at LB was basically playing with a player short in attack.

The tactical set up was very wrong. Wasn’t the last man in attack and was holding hands with Mount that entire first half. One point even saw Mount instruct him to go inside.

Was a disasterclass.

Based on his tenure so far, this could be copied & pasted to every post-match analysis.

Its all about narratives a proper striker burries the square ball from mount or the ball over the top from ziyech.. more than mount and Ziyech it was havertz who did zilch.. didn’t hold up anything and then didn’t finish two glorious chances which most top 6 strikers put away.

There's a good player in there that's forced to babysit Cucurella.

I want to see him and Chilwell

Hmmm it is actually a bit of both. Murdyk need to track back more.

Maybe I'd agree if this was a decade ago but the tables have turned in modern football. A fullback's ability to get forward is more important than a winger's ability to track back.

he's being badly misused, he's so direct and skillful yet we play the most uninteresting slow side to side football with Mudryk getting no support from his fullback to give him space to drive.

Feel like Mudryk will be begging to be drafted to the Eastern front if he spends another month or two being coached by Potter who's ruining him game by game.

Actually no, in modern football everyone need to defend. You can get away with 1 or maybe 2 player not defending but it is difficult to defend with only 7 player + gk.

Who do you want to track back Felix or Mudryk?

Neither, the gameplan should be to pretty much terrorize West Ham at any given opportunity.

By playing it slow and asking Mudryk to track back covering the entire length of the pitch is draining his stamina for what he's supposed to do in the first place which is attack and score goals.
