While these statistics are not exactly easy to define (when does a set piece become open play, for example?), are by definition small samples, and are certainly not kept officially, FBref shows us as having given up five (5) goals from dead balls — joint second-highest in the Premier League — and having scored just three (3) goals of our own that were preceded by a dead ball action (i.e. free kicks, corners, throw-ins, goal kicks).

Anecdotally, we’re terrible at defending corners and free kicks (especially on a second ball) and we’re toothless on attacking corners and free kicks — certainly when reminiscing about the goal-scoring exploits of the likes of John Terry, Gary Cahill, Branislav Ivanović, and Marcos Alonso. They all averaged roughly 1-in-10 for their Chelsea careers, combining for over 150 total goals that seemed even more plentiful than that.

We’re often left to wonder what we might be doing on the training ground to address these shortcomings — emphasis on “short”, if you’re of certain tactical persuasions and beliefs — but Mauricio Pochettino assures that we’re indeed working hard on these things and it’s simply a question of quality rather than effort and intention.

“We work a lot on set-pieces. We have (coaching) specialists. We are a coaching staff in charge of everything. We have a group of analysts for set-pieces. After that, it is about the quality of the player. It is about the takers. We don’t have a specialist (player). Maybe Chilly is good in the delivery, but we don’t have a specialist after that.

“If you want to be good in set-pieces, we work a lot. But then you need good takers. When you have good takers, and of course, Wolves have good takers, and like Manchester City have, or other clubs. It is not down to the work. We work similarly, but the problem is to have good takers.

“Look before at West Ham, and after. What changed? After and before? It’s not the same. The taker is [James] Ward-Prowse. For sure, you can work, like West Ham were working. But now, you add a player like him, you increase the percentage. That is football. Football belongs to the players. Not to the (coaching) specialists.”

Sorry mate, I meant to reply to the stuff about Poch saying our players are too short.  I can't see anything about him actually saying it ?

Jorginho problem is athleticism, as  long as you ask him to defend small area he is very good.

😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

Agreed Bob. As long as that area was six inches by six inches.

A problem I have with Poch is his language skills. He has been involved in English football for a long time, and yet whenever I hear him being interviewed I think.......qué?

Who else do you want to sign - Rory Delap?

Didn't realise we'd fallen as far as being a modern day Stoke City.

Ah those throw ins at Stoke. Good times lol

Not seen it myself. Maybe it is a comment from the future, maybe after Wolves or Villa away?

"We got knocked out of the cup today not through lack of effort, but because we are a team of midgets. What can we do to improve our set pieces with such an issue?"

🤣

We had Kante who will cover the rest of the field 😁😁

It's depressing to think that within months of the takeover our club went from a regular top 4 spot and regular CL , to the worst Chelsea PL side in decades .

Not really a suprised though. Our transfer strategy is very different.

True! I really struggle to understand him , I dunno how anyway knows what he is saying at the press conferences, they should provide subtitles

😁

Poch didn’t say we were too short but others say maatsen is, none of enzo, Caicedo, Gallagher are 6fyt.

In that article back there it said the team had " shortcomings", I think someone has taken that the wrong way !

🤣

He's an absolute fraud. Cole Palmer have single handedly saved his sorry career until now but hopefully this is the straw the breaks the camels back.

We got some top players in this side, he's making us way worse than the sum of its part.

We'll probably get a result here today, Wolves are suspect defensively but get him out! Throw the directions that hired him out at the same time and start over.

Yeah, I'm starting to shift towards the Poch out bandwagon... and I really didn't want to and give him the full season instead. But I really don't know how a "supposed" top draw manager cannot inspire a team against Wolves... especially after the spanking in the previous game. We have all been praising Poch's man management skills but I don't think he has any. We have been scammed just like with all the youth players we signed for a bomb.

All I’m seeing today is a bunch of blokes playing casual football, making mistakes every touch, under hitting most passes, as if they did not care. I think Wolves want it more and our team doesn’t care. Pochettino is not able to motivate this lot, so I’m starting to think that a change in coach to a Dyche-like manager should be made.

Haven’t commented in some time, I was all for keeping him for the season but it may be time to question him soon.

Granted there’s been injuries, and a lot, yet we’ve seen no real progression in play and the results are pretty damning. Even when we win, we’re hanging on by a thread.

The only issue is who could we realistically get if we part ways. Alonso is still relatively inexperienced, De Zerbi surely waits for City, Jose 3.0 brings an awful lot of risks, could we get Klopp 😂

Another game where Pochettino is being out coached. Let's see if he responds 2nd half, I cant see it tbh. We feel like a team that is poorly coached. Reminds me of Lampard in a way.

Not sure what long term projections were like to warrant the level of spending, but we are a midtable team, and look like we will stay a midtable team for the foreseeable.

Looking at the next 8/9 games, there are only 2 winnable matches in there against Burnley and Palace. Could quite easily lose the rest.

It's not attacking football, it's not possession based football, it's not counter attacking football either, nor park the bus football. It's not even the trash football Mourinho plays nowadays. Then what it actually is? All I see is a team that after 8 months with this manager and a full pre season plays the same type of clueless tactics I play with my friends in our five a side team.

Embarrassing.

It's "Individual" football. He's just a man-manager who is apparently good with relationships with players, and just lets then "express themselves" on the pitch. ie. he has no idea how to set the team up or what they should do. It's all about the players solving the problems themselves.
