Nicolas Jackson - striker

I don't, Drogba's goal record isn't up there with the best strikers in the league is it? But there's more to a forward than goals.

104 goals in the EPL.

Aye that's no great....

Drogba on his day was totally unplayable, NOBODY could cope with him. But he had plenty of days when he just wasn't up for it, those would be days when he couldn't trap a bag of cement. Shoulder shrugs and less effort, miskicked shots. Yes a total legend to us, but even he could be exasperating at times. No player is always perfect, it simply cannot happen. My first thought on Jackson when i saw a video was, just how much he reminded me of a young Drogba, hopefully now the monkey on the back, of that first goal has passed, we will see just what he is capable of. It's such a shame Nkunku is injured, as the connection during preseason, promised a great deal from the partnership.

Listen I think Drogba is up there with the likes of Henry, Aguero, Suarez, Shearer, etc. But what I'm saying is it's not his goals that put him up there, it was his holdup and linkup play. It's why I laugh when people tried to compare Lukaku to Drogba, definitely even moreso now, but Lukaku couldn't play with his back to goal like Drogba could, never in a million years. Jackson looks very good with his back to goal, and it's impressive to see.

Agreed.

I'd really like to see a bit if arrogance now, ownership of the position and for his teammates to see him as the focal point. There was a free kick 25 yards from goal against Lurpton which Enzo had a good go at. Prime Drogba grabs that fre kick and makes it his own.

Also if you watch Drogba's goals, so many of these were taken early or first time before the keeper had time to set himself. Jackson has good natural technique with both feet. I'd like to see a similar approach to his shooting as Drogba did.

I would have to disagree with you here Ajbod. I rarely, if ever, got the impression Drogba "wasn't up for it". Yes there were games when things wouldn't come off for him, but as you rightly pointed out that happens to every player. One of Drogba's many assets was how hard he worked be it closing down defenders in their own half or effectively playing as another centre-half in our own box to defend set-pieces, which he was absolutely brilliant at.

Some people also claim he was poor in his first two seasons. I was a season ticket holder in those days and it's a view I have always strongly disagreed with! Yes, he has admitted he had trouble settling in that first season but he also picked up a bad stomach muscle injury which kept him out for over two months and IMO he got little to no protection from some referees who appeared to be prepared to turn a blind eye to defenders kicking lumps out of him just because he was a big guy. No wonder he over dramatised foul contact at times!!

Yet even in that first season he still grabbed a decent 16 goals and 5 assists across all competitions. His second season he registered an astonishing 11 assists!! Of course, (despite the claims of him being poor those first two seasons), we won the title on both occasions and Drogba was a major reason for that. We finally had a centre-forward who could effectively hold the ball up under pressure and set-up others. I remember reading somewhere that in that first 2004/05 title winning campaign we scored a record number of goals from midfielders, a lot of that was down to Drogba's work ethic, incredible hold-up play and staggering aerial ability. He competed for every aerial duel and is without doubt one of the greatest ever strikers in the air.

The bloke was fricking awesome.

He was also a slow starter with us. Took a while to win the fans over. Can remember watching him in the warm up early days. Built like a brick sh*t house but struck me as very graceful. We had a tremendous spine to that team. Cech, Terry, Lampard, Drogba.

Drogba scored some wonderful goals for us that won matches some perhaps were more accurately described as ourageous.

Of course even if was not on top form we had the clubs best goal scorer ever too in Lampard.

Take Lamps off penalties and give them Drogba and he's got the goal record for a single season and no one would question his contribution

They should chalk this goal off the list for sure. Blatant cheating - and shows Arse had the ref in their pocket too. Taking the free kick before the ref blew his whistle - and the ref was in on it too. Disgrace.

I love drogba but I do think our number 8 at the time also had quite a few of the gos at free kicks.

Gudjohnsen should have just took the yellow and blocked the chance for that kick to even happen.

From the telegraph:

Jackson, who was booked for the third time this season for gesturing for an opponent to get a yellow card, missed Chelsea’s best chance in the 83rd minute.

I am not sure if this means it was his third booking, which he got for asking for a yellow, or his third booking, all three of which were from him asking for a yellow. If the latter - then that is braindead unforgivable.

Poor game today - definitely channeled a part of season one Drogba!

Should have scored. What was more concerning to me was the number of times when receiving the ball he accelerated with it back towards our goal. I don’t recall him doing that so frequently. Infact one moment in the second half he was the second deepest player after Silva when doing this.

Really excited by him, but has to start scoring. 1 in 4 is not enough.

Jackson was fine. Not great, same good movement, need to be sharper and stronger but it is as expected

But hopefully this will answer why manager will sign a Diego Costa when you have young Lukaku. If we are in tittle race, we are already out.

Maybe only the most optimistic Chelsea fan thought we would be in a title race this season. Now being 8 points off City in just 4 games has probably put those thoughts where they belong.

Anyone else think we shouldve fonr that Vlahovic deal?

Also shouldve signed Diaby too.

Proven goals.

Im happy we didn't sign them, I'd rather we trust Jackson and Broja when he gets back.

Shesh so much pressure on Broja while coming back from a serious injury. We are basically banking on him saving our season.

I like Jackson but I think he would have benefitted with an experience striker in the squad..

I like his hold up and link up.. the reason he is not scoring is that his runs are too straight right now.. for a striker the fact that he is never offside is concerning for me too.

he needs to learn to curve his runs and take a position that is by the side of the fender and not always in front .
