Lets look at the statistics while Torres was at Liverpool by season:

2007-2008    33 goals

2008-2009    17 goals

2009-2010    22 goals

2010-2011    9 goals

Chelsea have basically bought a player whose goal scoring ability has shown a trend of declining.

There should not really be any surprise that he is not scoring goals.

If any of us were to buy a striker for our club, i'm guessing the first thing you would check is his ability to score goals?

Maybe i'm missing something here but I don't think this is rocket science...

He was clearly broken when we bought him but that's literally the most absurd "trend" you've shown there.

He had a great first season, didn't match it in his second, improved on it in his third (so no "trend" so far), and then scored 9 in half a season, meaning that he was on course for roughly 20? Only trend you can take from those 4 seasons is that he scores ~20 goals per season but had a monster season first time around?

I've tried all the usual remedies...Paracetamol, Ibuprofen and the like but lately I find a mixture of alcohol and any type of opiate is the only way I can watch a game without constantly picturing him stretching one of our Tracksuits.

I've tried Hypnotherapy, Hydrotherapy and Physiotherapy'

Anger management, Pain management, hard drugs soft drugs and soft porn but still his image appears like an apparition.

I need help, I need a reaction from the only man that can save me, the only man whos patella can whip in a sharp enough motion to oust this fraud and bring me back to the modicum of sanity I used to feel was almost normal.

Help me mr Abramovic....I'll be ever ever so grateful.

Poor Chippy, anger, pain you forgot 'interim management'

Torres looks to be (at the moment) the kind of player that will score against weaker oppositions but may not contribute so much against stronger teams. Whilst I'm happy he's scoring again, I feel like he needs to chip in a bit more against better defences. His runs and ball retention are generally quite poor (more the latter than the former, but still)

Also, just because......#f**krafa

Funny thing is, he's got the same amount of goals (in all competition) as Rooney and Michu this season, more goals than Suarez, Ba, Aguero etc., and has only been outscored by Defoe and RVP.

How has he scored so many goals this season while playing so badly? At this rate he'll be on track for a 30 goal season!

Makes me feel ill whenever I see him wearing anything with our badge on it too.

My thoughts:

1) Torres would probably still be good in a lesser league with less physicality which allows him more time on the ball than he gets in the PL - he does perform more consistently against lesser teams and his first touch is probably his biggest issue, not his finishing IMO despite his miss against Corinthians.

2) He probably shouldn't be playing in the PL for any team never mind Chelsea.

3) A move to the Eredivisie or even leagues with many crappy teams like the Ukrainian Premier League or the Russian Premier League would probably be most ideal for him. He will get more time on the ball in La Liga and Serie A too, but the standard of opposition there may be too high.

That is the worrying thing.....It could well be that Roman takes a look at the cold hard stats and decides that he has actually turned a corner....

It is good that he is scoring goals, any goals are welcome, however we do need to consider the context of the goals he has scored. His tally has been hugely inflated by goals against lower opposition, in games that are already won. Very Rarely has he scored opening goals or winners, and this is a big deal, as we need a striker who can make the difference in tight games. At the moment torres is not that player.

He scored our opener against arsenal. He scored our first of his shin against Shaktar and he got the important first goal against sunderland. but i am trying to think of any more important goals. the Barca one was special as it killed the tie, however we would have still progressed had his goal not been counted and the scores stayed the same.

Yes Torres is scroing more then Aguero, Rooney, Suarez etc...but i would prefer any of them in our team over Torres.

His performance was typified by a moment in around the 41 min mark when Lampard took a shot and their keeper parried it to his right. Torres was around the edge of the box and had ample time to get to the ball either before or at the same time as the defender that cleared it. Instead of busting a gut to get there and trying to make some kind of goal scoring chance, Torres was slowly walking AWAY from the ball while looking back at it. It was unbelievable. I had to rewind and re-watch it to make sure I wasn't seeing things.

I'm far from a Torres basher, but if he's not gonna try and make something from a parry from a keeper there isn't much hope for the guy is there?

Spot on with that example TJB. There were also two others I noted, one in the 22nd minute when Bertrand was released down the left flank got right to the byline and delivered a truly excellent cross right to the edge of the six yard box. It was the sort of ball Drogba used to gobble up and a cross that any striker worth his salt would have been busting a gut to get on the end of. Torres never even made the run and effectively gave the centre-half a free header. The second was the one that deflected off Frank across the Leeds box, it wasn't really a chance but compare the movement of lamps and Torres. Frank made a run from left of centre into the box and took up an angle that made a pass to him possible. Torres hardly moved and at the time the ball was ready to be delivered was positioned behind a defender making a pass to him impossible.

His first half performance was one of the most abject I have seen from any centre-forward this season. There was an improvement 2nd half from him but by God a genuine quality centre-forward is going to make so much difference when we get one. The good news is today is one day closer to the transfer window than yesterday was.

Just bought the Daily Star. They have used Torres as the headline for yesterday's match. Seriously. I love the guy but he scored a late tap in that made no difference anyway, why is the headline about him?

Were they talking about his new eyeliner?

I find the Torres situation interesting - for well over a year he was pretty much awful for us and had massive spells without scoring. Yet the fans got behind him, constantly cheered his name at every game and supported him 100%

Now, on probably his best run for Chelsea I haven't heard his name sung even once, the fans on here are almost entirely against him, and I'm wondering exactly why that is?

I'm inclined to say it is in part due to the fact his heart doesn't look in it at times recently, typified last night as someone said when their keeper spilled the ball and Torres just strolled around casually without even trying to chase it down.

But also I wonder how much of it is that we blame him for the demise of Ancelotti, and the demise of Di Matteo, and more recently I think (even subconsciously) we blame him for the appointment of Rafa.

Either way it very much seems like people have turned against Fernando, will be interesting to see what happens in the January window.

Don't think anyone has turned on him apart from the strong majority on here! I still hear the fans chant torres whenever he scores or does something well.

Could they just be going through the motions though?

It's certainly possible (even probable) that they get behind Torres when they attend games and express discontent with him elsewhere.

I do think that one more goal drought could be the turning point for the crowd at the games. As long as he is getting support at games that is all that matters in all honesty.

blize, I get the impression that due to 'interim' coming in, I think Torres gets some of the blame for that. I have no idea why, and even then, interim is just doing what any manager would, being offered a top job at a club. The board are hardly taking any blame and it was their decision.

Some of the sh*t Torres gets in posts here is embarrassing. Sure, we can vent frustration but some of the personal attacks on a Chelsea player is cringe-worthy.

As a season ticket holder I think the support at the ground, whilst still there from the majority of fans, is nowhere near as fervent as it was previously. Not so long ago he only had to run for a ball or lay off the simplest of passes to literally garuantee a spontaneous round of applause from many people. I have said it before, but will repeat it here, I have never seen any Chelsea player given the level of patience and support Torres got for consistently mediocre or average performances. Now I think the overwhelming majority understand the reality. That we have brought a severely damaged product that is nowhere near good enough for where we want to be.

This.

I have seen him being called some pretty disgraceful names (even a footballer.....joke of course) on here and for a current Chelsea player that is IMO shocking.

We all know he is not what we expected and most would like a striker who is far more consistent which we may be getting but let's remember he is in his best form goalscoring wise since he came to the Bridge.

You sure about that Mod ?

As for Torres, I think the general feeling from the support is now one of utter apathy. The circus has gone on for too long now, and there isnt a Chelsea fan I have spoken to (at games or outside of games) who think he will 'come good' or has a long term future at the club.

He gets the token 'Torres, Torres' when he scores but thats it. The overwhelming and frequent goodwill he had from the fans has now completley evaporated as patience has been tested to the limit. His continual prescence in the team despite consistently underwhelming has frustated the support to a state of indifference. His body languange on the pitch is shocking and his reactions to other team mates when he doesnt get the ball exactly how he wants it (despite often being in the wrong position) is pathetic.

Id say he has chosen a good time to score a few goals, if he hadnt had hit this 'spree' i would suggest the fans would be very close to turning, because of his link to interim but also due to the fact that despite his goals his actual level of performance has bordered on continual complete rubbish, last night being a prime example.

As has been stated on this thread a hundred times, replacing him with someone just half decent will improve this team by 50% instantly.

I presume because people are taking into account the level of the opposition those goals have come against and, in some instances, how those goals have been scored i.e. Monterray deflected shot, the Shaktar shiner and the Leeds tap in. Now I fully expect some on here to come out with the usual, "I don't care who he scores against, or how he scores them". Fine if that's what they are happy with. Fine I suppose, if they think that makes him what we need. But I think they are totally wrong. IMO you measure the real worth of your Centre-forward against the best teams, with the best defenders, in the big games. On that criteria Torres is a repeated failure.

Great post, and exactly right. Glad you mentioned his body language.

We can't deny however that Torres has scored in 4 of his last 5 games, and in 2 of those games he scored twice, making it 6 in 5.

My fear is that Roman will credit the FSW with reviving Torres, and then we're really in trouble, because both of them might stay beyond the summer.

Those 6 goals include a pen, 2 against Nordsjaelland, 1 that was going well wide till it was deflected (against Monterrey), and a tap-in against Leeds. It hardly suggests he's back, but alas, it might make Roman feel vindicated.

I guess you can say what Torres is getting now, which he wasnt getting before is luck. And a lucky striker is something every team wants.

Lets see if it continues. Id be more confident if he was showing any type of form but he really isnt -  his performances in the last 2 matches have been woeful.
