Are you referring to crowd pressures or "behind-the-scenes" pressures?

If it's the former, I don't think there's been much crowd pressure towards a manager for selecting Torres, mostly due to a lack of better competition when he played consecutive games. And with the competition for places, I doubt that'll start to happen with Mourinho; if Torres doesn't perform he won't start.

If it's the latter, I can't see Mourinho letting anyone else dictate who plays for him.

Nobody know what Torres will turn up next season, but for me it's adding to the excitement of the new season. Just like you don't know how Lukaku will do at a top club, will KDB be as good as we've hyped him up to be etc. Jose will do what's best for the team and if he goes back to being poor then he will be dropped.

Well summarised. There's a lot of "ifs" and "hopes" going into this season, the difference this time round is that the majority are positive. Roll on kick off!

if Torres stays Im sure Jose will find a way to ease him out of the spotlight, because that's his main problem, too much focus by the

press & media in general and us lot on how he has never lived up to the price tag........if he blends into the squad as just another

player on the bus .....then maybe we'll get to stop hearing about him day in day out and this thread will finally end.........couldnt

care less if he scores 10 or 20 goals, the teams gonna need every body to chip in with goals over the course of the season, no worries there with the

other top class attackers (mids & fwds) alongside him in the squad (plus our defenders are partial to a goal or 10 over a season)

if Rooney comes even better, but I think FT will stay either or.

I'm basically just bored of it all. I read on SSN that Jose intends to build his team around Torres and get the best out of him and I just thought 'Great. Cos no manager's ever tried that before.'

I know Jose can work miracles, I have no doubt, but I'm just fed up of it all now, it's the same story every season. 'Will Torres start firing?' 'Can the new manager get him back to his best?' It's turning into the Fernando Torres Show. It's almost as though it isn't about Chelsea anymore.

I am still hoping we can pull off a coup and sign Rooney. Cos if we fail to, I'm actually not too confident the strikers we have  can win us the league. Ba isn't consistent enough, Lukaku is young and inexperienced and Torres went six whole months without scoring in the league last season.

nobody knows for sure, no, but based on the evidence of the last 3 seasons we can take a damn good guess that he won't (unlike and lukaku and especially kevin, who has looked fantastic on loan and now in preseason). so if jose will do "whats best for the team" he'll get rid of torres now instead of waiting until the season begins, where he'll then be forced to drop him like we all knew he would, then will have to rely on lukaku and ba for 6 months.

from the quotes i saw, i dont remember him saying anything about building the team around torres, i think that was the press over exaggerating as per. i remember him saying the team may need to adapt to suit him. i could be wrong, but i thought that was all he said, and the press took it and ran with it.

when hes asked about torres having only worked with him for a few days since Torres returned, he's hardly going to dismiss him, as he needs to give everyone a fair chance to impress. overall, i dont believe for one second that we will be relying on torres this season

Nobody knows what Torres will turn up? Do me a favour. The same Torres that hasn't shown up for the last two and a half years. Some of you are so deluded it's unbelievable.

His record in the Prem is atrocious and his performances have been even worse. Have you not been watching? Jose's been watching and you can bet, as soon as he knew the Chelsea job was his, he started watching every single game we played last season. Why do you think he's going for Rooney? Because he knows exactly which Torres will "turn up".

Torres has been given star billing, he's been given loads of creative players, he was given his old manager at Liverpool, he's been playing for a team far stronger than most of the opponents it faces in the Premier League. He's been given two and a half years. He's been given preferential treatment.

Lukaku wants to go to the WC, right? He wants to play, right? He made that clear. Jose told him to come back and he'll play because Jose knows a player when he sees one. So, if Lukaku is going to play but is too raw to be our front-line striker and Jose wants Rooney .. I think that tells you exactly what Jose thinks of Torres.

Torres just ain't good enough and that would have been made abundantly obvious to Jose after watching a few of our games. I promise you, if it had been any other player over these last few years, nobody, but nobody would be saying they don't know which player is going to turn up next season.

He's not a Jekyll and Hyde player .. He's not unpredictable .. He's not inconsistent .. We know exactly which player will be turning up .. There is only one Fernando Torres .. And he's not very good.

Did you watch our game up at Anfield last season? Torres inexplicably played, despite the fact Ba was bang in form, had produced in big games against big teams, and despite the fact Torres had just played midweek and Ba was rested. Did you see Torres' performance? Can you explain why he wasn't subbed? Did our manager think like you, wondering which Torres might suddenly appear in a few moments? The reason I bring it up is this ..

I'm not a massive fan of Sturridge but I said all along he was a million times better than Torres. Any idiot could see that. He has pace, he has skill, he drives into the box and he scores goals. He played 45 minutes at Anfield, the first and only time he has played against us, and he completely changed the game. He showed more in that 45 than Torres has ever shown us. Torres has never given us anything remotely like that and that's what you want, nay, that's what you need. Yes we all know Sturridge is flawed but Torres couldn't perform like that if his life depended on it.

Torres just hasn't got it. Full stop. Open your eyes everybody. He could only perform on Thursday nights. Why? Coincidence?

No doubt this will upset a few people but there you go, I just had to respond to the quote above. I find it incredible that anyone can still be in any doubt as to which Torres will "show up".

You'll only get the Torres of Thursday nights if he plays on Thursday nights. You won't get that Torres on Monday nights, Tuesday nights or Wednesday nights. He needs to go to a club with more modest aspirations.

Right .. I've got that off my chest .. I'll duck for cover now.

While most of what you said is true I think that you're being a bit harsh on him. Nobody is going to come out and say that you're completely wrong but he did pull out some good performances for us, but unfortunately those were few and far between. Towards the end of the season he started playing really well and while I'm aware that he did the same at the end of the season before I think with the help and stability of Mourinho at the club will help Torres be useful for us. He'll more than likely never be the player he was at Liverpool but he still has enough talent to help us win the league.

You'll probably get a few people angry at you on here but most of what you've said was justified, I'm just feeling optimistic about the coming season, Torres included. Hopefully you will be able to praise Torres should he prove you wrong this season but I don't hold your pessimism towards Torres against you, it's not as if we've not given him enough chances as it is.

^ Mate, you've mellowed. I was looking for a good old fashioned argument. Fair play to you.

Haha well the thing is I'm aware that I'm in the minority that still backs Torres to do well but I'm not delusional enough to say that most of what you said isn't true. I accept that he's been a flop for us, I just feel optimistic that he'll still do well for us, although I can't blame anybody who isn't willing do the same thing as most of the time he continues to underwhelm.

Second guessing Jose, yeah thats interesting, and its hypothetical to say Jose cannot get Torres doing a lot more, lets just see what jose can do, Rooney might be the alternative, but what happens if moyes convinces him to stay, the thread, will become the 'Groundhog day saga of the groundhog day thread.

Davey's post has the same kind of force in like it was written minutes after Torres was subbed off. Good for you. New season is so close.

What is also true is we can't(seem to) offload him, his salary is crazy and he is an okay player. That comment I've written about a hundred times in this 350+ pages of sh*t storm of a topic.

Has there ever been such unrest with a player who finished the season top goal scorer for Chelsea?

Edited by Sweddy

I think it does all depend on if we get Rooney. Should we fail in another bid, I honestly think Torres will be our first choice. If we get Rooney, it could be a case of it being Rooney, then Lukaku, then Torres. Or Torres could even find himself fourth choice if Lukaku and Ba start delivering. Given Rooney could well end up costing us 40 million (from what I've heard) we'll probably use him to lead the line. Unless he's garbage.

Typical Torres performance last night. Showed glimpses of skill and pace, and then the end product was just either giving the ball away or falling over.

Wow, cmon guys.

You have to trust Jose to the end. The bitter end. And when he says "I have some magic to work on this player, we are going to make adjustments to make him better" we need to all stand up and listen.

Look at the effect he has had in the past. Zlatan would kill for him. Drogba would run through walls for him. He takes the mercurial and the unmotivated and he replaces their eyes with laser beams like a Seal Team sniper FFS. Motivation will never be a problem, because he motivates like nobody else in the game. And all the negative press out there, all the sneering bullsh*t from the Daily Fail, etc will be used like a rocket fuel to power the goals of next season. BANK ON THIS.

You can write Jose off, but write him off at your own peril. If there is any talent left in the tank of a major player, even vaporous fumes of greatness, he will adjust the players game and motivation and completely revolutionize the way he plays and fits at Chelsea. Never ever doubt the special one.
