One of our poorer investments in recent years. Looked pretty clueless from the moment we bought him. When you consider we’ve had the likes of Ake in our ranks at the same time you’ve got to wonder why the club keeps feeling the need to look outside rather than promoting from within.

Agreed that we could have spent the money better elsewhere, however, prior to his knee injury he seemed to be figuring it out at Schalke and playing pretty well.  At the very least, he comes back, rehabs, and gets fully fit.  At the best, we recall him and he provides a little more competition for the remainder of the season for Alonso and Emerson.  Then we sell him this summer either way.

Not gonna lie, had a world class game against PSG. Think Mourinho dropped him after that game for some reason.

I think shortly after the PSG game, he had a real poor outing and was subbed off at halftime - think it was a PL match but can't remember who against.

 

Edit: Just looked it up, the PSG game was Feb 16, then 11 days later on Feb 27 he was subbed off at halftime at Southampton

I think he's injured again isn't he? Shalke probably don't see the point in keeping him.

Honestly thought we sold this guy already.

I don't think he is being brought back to compete in our first team. I would be suprised if he ever played for us again.

He has barely played any football for 2 years. I think we will send somewhere he is going to play regularly.

If we can get a decent fee for Alonso i'd have Baba or Aina back to play understudy to Emerson

Would have liked to see Baba at LWB in Conte’s system, would have helped hide his defensive deficiencies.  Too bad about his knee injuries.

Not sure he’s suited for a back 4, especially in the PL.

Baba was and is dog turd.

Alonso is a much better player.

Heir to Ash ? Did this guy ever play for us? Might’ve done but 15/16 is a blur to me thankfully. I was pregnant most of the season but even that wasn’t as painful as some of the results we had

Good for Baba, he’s had a rough go since that knee injury.

Every time I see Alonso, I can't help thinking about alternative options and the only one the club has at the moment is Baba with da Silva being let go. 

No news on him at all with Afcon finishing a while back. 

He wasn't great when he played a few seasons ago but he showed a lot of promise when Chelsea bought him and he does have a bit of pace and quality on the ball.

Especially when none of them have done anything that Ryan Bertrand couldn't have done with a similar opportunity ....

WTF point to offer him a new contract, then immediately loan him out? He's never going to make the first team, the club is still banking him he comes good and somebody pays a 30M transfer fee, and we get our investment back.

So if he does well on loan we can get a fee for him.
