I personally hope it's not Kovacic since that duo didn't work last season and it didn't work this season either. IMO Mount should try it, he can play deeper and control the flow of the game. Though he might not be able to create chances in the same way but it might be a blessing for him because he doesn't have many assists from open play. Kante - Mount CHO Havertz Pulisic
January 30, 20215 yr Kante is the perfect double 6 because it’s like having two of him on the pitch when he’s on it.

Jorginho is the one with the best positional sense but Jorginho does not have the leg to play in double pivot, kova has the athleticism and aggression but little positional sense defensively,Mount probably can be converted into a double pivot, but watching mount outperform ziyech as no 10 in 10 minutes cameo then force to him to play dm so we can play ziyech as no 10 make little sense.
January 30, 20215 yr I’ve been thinking for a while it may be worth trying out James or Christensen as defensive midfield partner for Kante. Seeing as Tuchel played CHO as a wing back unexpectedly I’m hoping that he would be open to trying this out as well. I know James played midfield a bit for Wigan anyway. I think they’d both offer more athleticism than Kova/Jorginho , and therefore they’d allow Kante to roam without leaving massive gaps in midfield. Kovacic also tends to go roaming which leaves us exposed, while jorginho just doesn’t have the legs. I think Christensen has the ball playing skills to step into midfield and his biggest weakness as a centre back is aerial battles etc , so in midfield his weaknesses wouldn’t be exposed as much.
February 1, 20215 yr I see a lot of people saying there is no place for kante in the team. It is crazy statement, it is very easy to see kante replacing jorgi, take our games against Burnley, we can ask azpi to push higher more to deliver his inside cross more. While we have kante protecting our cb. With wolves, instead of defending with 5 man behind the ball, we can push kova to play higher. We even can play mount/Havertz instead of kova when kova started to playing badly (the guy is a bit inconsistent). Without losing much against weaker team.

February 1, 20215 yr I reckon Billy Gilmour would have the football intelligence, passing ability and positional discipline to complement Kante pretty well, putting to one side that they are both vertically challenged of course 🙂 Edited February 1, 20215 yr by Sexyfootball

February 3, 20215 yr I think we will see the Jorginho-Kante pivot. Its hard to justify leaving out Kova especially on recent form, but with the two floating tens we should have enough creativity especially if Ziyech plays and drops deep. https://weaintgotnohistory.sbnation.com/2020/10/13/21511338/what-is-chelseas-best-midfield This article is from a while back but it talks about all our different midfield combinations and statistically which have been more successful.
February 4, 20215 yr He just come back from injury, was as bad as he was when he came back last season. Gilmour should be ahead of him until he gets back in to form.

Don't know. For me he really isn't himself since we switched to a more possesion based football when Sarri came.Players seem to be getting past him with ease,or he's dispossesed easily and ends up commiting silly fouls.

One could argue that Kovacic was the reason we had control in the first place.Dude was everywhere, running with the ball, running past players, passing between lines. Not really optimistic with Kante-Jorginho in the middle, but let's see what can Tuchel do with Kante,he did talk about him a lot in his press conferences.
February 4, 20215 yr He's coming back from an injury so I'll let him off, he looked out of his depth though big time, the game was passing him by. Lamela just went past him with eaze, and Holjgberg bullied him off the ball just outside of our box. Poor game by all means. I'm concerned because time isn't on his side anymore, he's coming up 30 isn't he?

Not only injuries but also his style of play has made a mark, and as you said he is not a young player anymore. I remember a few years ago, Claude Makelele said that Kante couldn't run like that when he gets older and that he would eventually have to change his style of play. To be fair I think he wasn't far away from the truth.

To be fair I think he wasn't far away from the truth. This is not to say Kante has no technical ability, but a lot of his game does rely on pace, Kante losing pace is going to effect his game big time, unless like you and Makalele said, he adapts his game. I don't see that last part happening though. This is why I wasn't against him leaving in the transfer window last season, time isn't on his side anymore and injuries keep piling up.
February 5, 20215 yr I don't agree with that at all - Kanté's quality isn't defined by his pace, it's defined by how well he reads the game and how good his positioning is. Him being incredibly quick for recoveries is just a bonus.
February 5, 20215 yr It's a real sense of deja vu reading some of the opinions on him from last right and that he is nearly finished. Scroll back ten or so pages in this thread and you'll see pretty much the same people saying the exact same thing. Then you keep reading and you see how it all turns round. Form is temporary, class is permanent. Kante is a player ANY manager in the world would want in his squad.
