August 31, 20169 yr Well I don’t know what we're playing at to be honest. I guess we made a profit of some sort. Hope he shows the discipline, tactical awareness and steady calm we all know he's capable of. *cough* A cheeky bid for De Bruyne anyone?

August 31, 20169 yr So does that mean we are going to switch to conte's 3-5-2? Tibo Cahill/brana/zouma... Jt.... Luiz Azpi............................Alonso Kante.............matic.........oscar .............hazard ...................... Costa
August 31, 20169 yr Surely the biggest shock is that we are resigning a player for less than we sold him for Or at least i hope we are...
August 31, 20169 yr He would never have been my choice but the more the day goes on the more I've warmed to the idea of his return. He's nowhere near as bad as his harshest critics make out. If nothing else, he always gives us something interesting to talk about.

August 31, 20169 yr Costa and Luiz in the same team? Brilliant. How long before they form a bromance the likes of which have never been seen before or end up in a training ground punch up?

I actually read we only got £35m for him when our annual records were analysed on wagnh. I like his character, and we are lacking leadership, however this transfer just smacks of desperation. Hopefully conte can do what mourinho didnt have the patience for, and that is hammer some discipline into his play. He does make mistakes, but he also has had very solid games for us aswell. I think he needs quality leadership next to him in order for him to shine, which means when pairedwith anyone but jt, it is going to be a toss up over which david luiz plays. It looks like it is going to get through so like with any new signing, especially one of the munich heroes, i will support him and hope he has a successful second period with us.
August 31, 20169 yr In hindsight, I don't think there's actually been an 'available' central defender capable of slotting straight into a title challenging side. It was always going to be one of the following: 1. Find a player willing to force the transfer through. 2. Find a club willing to let a player deemed outside of their 'strongest' centre back pairing/trio. 3. Proceed with Terry & Cahill (and probably Ivanovic), and hope Zouma recovers and offers competition Option 1 has drawn a blank - and unless we start waving silly money at players where's the incentive for the elite players to leave a lifestyle in Italy/Spain/France for London life in a very physically demanding league, without Champions League football. I'm sure Romagnoli and Koulibaly would've been great signings, but there was nothing to suggest they (or their clubs) were ready to agree to a transfer. Option 2 means we're left picking at backups from clubs we'd like to think we're (at least) on a par with. Luiz is established, experienced and (reasonably) reliable, has a history with the club, and looks to be coming at a relatively reasonable price given current market values. I'd be pretty damn happy if this goes through, as far as players fitting into this 'Option 2' category, I can't think of many better and I'd personally rather this than go into the season with Luiz than as is.
August 31, 20169 yr I can't say I wanted him a few days ago but for some reason I can't wipe the smile off my face as it becomes more and more likely. He always made games more interesting.
August 31, 20169 yr Funny thing is he could probably end up being our captain next year when Terry and Iva possibly leave.
August 31, 20169 yr Excellent News!! Obviously he has weaknesses but if you could ask for one manager that can get the best out of Luiz in terms of his defending and tactical awareness its Conte. Not to mention the spirit and emotion Luiz brings to the table. This would be a great signing and now I'm happy we didn't get our initial targets. Azpilicueta ---- Luiz ---- Terry ---- Alonso
August 31, 20169 yr This is not good. 32MM GBP for a 29yr old unreliable CB is not the direction this team should be going. Too much money for a short term solution with very little chance of re-selling at a marginal lost. So sad how the team keeps making the same mistakes. I would have rather take a chance at bringing in Maksimovic who is younger, cheaper and shares very similar traits, plus upside. I am in disbelief.

Reasonable price, your joking right? Reasonably reliable, he will be the least consistent CB at Chelsea, you never know what your going to get. For some fans that seems like a fun thing. Chelsea have enough CBs, if they was going to sign one it had to be one to improve the defence, not make it weaker. If they wanted more cover buy someone for cheaper, better and more reliable as a stop gap till you can get one of your main targets. Chelsea need a forward anyway. Going into a season with only 2. God help Zouma and Christensen playing next to Luiz. Edited August 31, 20169 yr by Ernie_blue

I think it depends on the add-ons and if they were triggered - I think that's the likely source of the difference between the 32/35 million figure versus the 50 million in terms of what we paid. And it's been two years, I'm sure he's grown up and matured, so that should add on a few million pounds to his actual value...
August 31, 20169 yr Great transfer. Hope he will join the new 3-5-2 formation or at least will take Matic's place in midfield but right now it doesn't matter. I am so f**king happy that the Prince is coming home. Edited August 31, 20169 yr by Pendergast
