According to sky since he signed for Chelsea he has scored 10 league goals, the highest of any other defender in the league and had the most shots of any Chelsea player in the last game. To be fair he should be getting assists but how can we argue with that!

His crossing is hit or miss but he still offers more going forward than the large majority of defenders. 10 goals and 4 assists in the league so far for us. The threat is real.
December 18, 20178 yr I wish people would get off his back. He plays every damn game and contributes so much. Defends, scores- impossible looking free kicks- and 100% commitment. As someone else said, it's the club's fault that we don't have a proper back-up. There is little more he can do.
December 18, 20178 yr Alonso takes absolutely brilliant set pieces and has a cracking shot. The only thing I find frustrating with him is for a wingback he actually doesn’t put in many crosses, everything seems to come from the right and we have no Beckham on that side.

His lack of pace means that he won't consistently be able to deliver a good ball without interruptions. His crosses are mostly floaters so it depends a lot on good placing which is difficult when he's being marked tighter now than last year. imo Beckham was world class at crossing so that's always going to be tough to replicate. A Beckham on that side would be mint tho Edited December 18, 20178 yr by Deino
December 18, 20178 yr What is apparent though is we get good balls from the RCB with Azpi finding Morata. I'm hoping we get Sandro during this break and that Alonso could play LCB because as we all state he has several other attributes besides pace and crosses.
December 26, 20178 yr today is one of the things that annoys me with alonso. he will be poor, but he's always got a goal in him from a fk or header, finding space on the left side of the oppo's box and scoring with his feet etc. we do need a better lwb, but when he scores important goals for us it's hard to just push him aside.
December 27, 20178 yr 10 goals in a calendar year, very few LB has done better than that. He never looked spectacular, but his stats didn't lie
December 27, 20178 yr No one can deny his free kicks are brilliant. I feel like he is going to score every-time he takes one.
December 27, 20178 yr He's a very good player, but he does need a rest. I don't think anyone can argue with that, get someone else for that position.

January 4, 20188 yr Still doesn't look like a great LWB, but he definitely knows how to score goals, only wished in 1 of those chances fall to him

I think he is a great player, im not sure he is a great lwb though, he's too tall, has problems defending against pacey players, not the best at running down the line with the ball and his crossing is not his best attribute. He always seems to have his best moments of the game when he is completely out or position. People might think I'm mad, but if you look at his skill set i think he would do pretty well as a centre forward. Great shot and finishing, great heading ability, excellent positional awareness in front of goal, strong on the ball. I cant see it happening when we have a 70m striker but i'd like to see how he gets on as a centre forward...

January 6, 20188 yr Interestingly read today Alonso's dad played for Barca and his Grandfather for Real Madrid, not bad pedigree that.

He'd probably be a worldie in the 90s
January 7, 20188 yr I actually rate Alonso really highly, I wasn’t a fan of the signing at the beginning but he’s been absolutely terrific for us. Provides more than Moses going forward and in all honesty (I’ll get shot down here) upgrading RWB is more important than LWB. If I had the option of Alex Sandro or cover for LWB & a Dani Alves-esque RWB, it would be the latter.
January 7, 20188 yr You've only got to see the pigs ear that others have made of the LWB position to appreciate what Alonso does in that role ...
