April 1, 20188 yr People that think pace isn’t an issue go watch that third goal today and think again. Whilst i’m here though, take away Alonso’s goals and is he actually that good of a wing back? Average defender and can’t cross a ball. His goals are his saving grace. Thought Emerson looked more dangerous when he came on.

Thought Emerson looked more dangerous when he came on. I don't think anybody said pace wasn't an issue but clearly he has offensive qualities. He needs to be covered by a winger who can also defend, the same way Willian covered for Ivan. Problem is Alonso is even slower than Ivan and if we do get a manager who switches to a back 4 you have to wonder if Alonso won't turn back into a Sunderland quality player.
April 1, 20188 yr Alonso is a hard one. He's obviously a very good player with a beauty of a left foot and technically good but his lack of agility, acceleration and pace is a problem. If he had the physical qualities of Kyle Walker he'd easily be one best wing backs in the world In some positions on the pitch pace isn't a major issue, but at wing back it's probably one of the most important qualities along with acceleration and agility. Alonso just doesn't have the physical ability to relentlessly get up and down the pitch all game, while he scores a few goals and is a great finisher our buildup play sometimes suffers because he doesn't stretch the play enough and is unable to go past players, he also suffers defensively at times and struggles to get back I look at Kyle Walker, he isn't a great footballer or a great defender and isn't blessed with great technical ability but due to being an amazing athlete he makes a great wing back. His ability to get up and down the pitch, stretch play and use his pace to recover in defence are amazing Also I do wonder if Alonso would work as a LB. If Conte does go it's quite likely we'll probably move to a back 4 with a new manager. Alonso isn't being great at 1 on 1 defending, he wouldn't have an extra CB to help cover for him and due to playing in a slightly more defensive position he'd be unlikely to get as much goal scoring opportunities I'd like to see Emerson get a few games, I feel Alonso needs a rest, he's basically played non-stop for almost two years. Emerson was quite highly rated at Roma and stats wise was very similar to Sandro. He's also looked good when he has played for us
April 1, 20188 yr Ive said it before and il say it again, in a back 4 he would worry me. He had a shocker today, like the poster above me said wish should give Emerson some game time now.
April 1, 20188 yr I would like to see him on the left side of an attack. He is much better going forward. He can be very dangerous and has a sweet left foot. For me the wingbacks aren't good enough. Moses is poor too. I would like to see Zappacosta and Palmieri play more regularly, but whether it happens who knows. Conte is his own man and only he can answer why he persists with Moses and Alonso. Moses needs replacing more than Alonso though.
April 4, 20188 yr Never realised that his grandfather had played for Real Madrid in the 1950s and 60s and that his grandfather had scored the third goal in their first European Cup Final win against Reims. His grandfather played in four of Real Madrids European Cup winning run back then.
April 14, 20188 yr Seems everyone on reddit wants him banned for that challenge, though reddit hates Alonso anyway. Wasn't paying that much attention to it and the commentators on my stream didn't make much of a deal about it, it looked to me like he was trying to get around the ball and caught him high, not intentional.

Could have been a red, but hardly the worst tackle we will see this season. I find it hard to feel any sympathy for Southampton fans when our lot have had nothing go in their favour all season. It's that bad against us that we can't even rely on VAR for a decision. I was watching a stream from America, they must have shown the replay 6 or 7 times. I have seen less fuss made over way worse tackles than that. I'm sure MOTD will bleat on about it for a long time tonight too, this is what tends to happen when one of our players get away with it. They are quick to edit out the bad tackles on our players though. Edited April 14, 20188 yr by Scott Harris

You want to play a defender as a winger because of his offensive ability? Why not just buy a winger instead?
April 14, 20188 yr Could've been sent off, Could've done more on both goals, but he put a great cross in for the opener. Eventful afternoon.

If we were playing with three central midfielders i.e 4-3-3 I think he would work perfectly on the left hand side like Frank Lampard as he has the skill, vision, an eye to score, can tackle and does not require much pace. He would score quite a few more goals too from that position.

I get the idea, that he is very good tactically and his positional game within the box is good, along with great finishing makes him a good goal threat in the box. The problem is he is quite limited beyond that in an attacking sense and we would lose too much offensively if he took up a spot that a natural offensive player would normally take. Its why the wing back role is good for him, it allows him to take up those offensive positions whilst maintaining enough spaces for actual offensive players to play (As he technically takes up the spot of a defender within the team). I cant see him doing well within a back four though, which is where we are seemingly headed next season.
April 15, 20188 yr His assist took away what was a poor performance from him again. Don't get why Emerson doesn't get a look in.

April 15, 20188 yr Alonso was very poor yesterday. Uninterested display and looked on like he didn't care when he watched the Southampton player tuck away their 2nd, instead of breaking a neck to get a challenge in.
April 17, 20188 yr Guess what? He's been charged by the FA for violent conduct! Meanwhile at Tottenham.....
April 17, 20188 yr Mental with half the sh*t that happens at Spurs. The dives, the studs up challenges. As Ash said, the FA truly are a bunch of twats.
