World Cup 2018 Qualifiers

Just back from Windsor Park. If England are dire, the Germans are like a well-oiled machine.

Unfortunately for Northern Ireland the Germans scored a cracking goal in the 2nd minute and it was a struggle after that. Second half Northern Ireland were much better, pressed harder all over the pitch and created a few chances including one that skimmed the crossbar when a goal looked certain.

Crowd was fantastic as usual - the only songs sung were in support of the team. German fans mixed in the home crowd without any trouble and everyone had fun. The goal Northern Ireland scored at the end was justly deserved for the effort put in. ::clap2::

Look at the team Holland are putting out today. The drop in quality from only a few years ago is unbelievable. It's an even bigger drop in quality than England.

It's unbelievable, we have close to nothing left.
Didn't make it again this year, real shame. Even when your country is sh*t it's stil fun to watch them in the summer at a WC or EC.

As an Englishman, from my personal point of view it's been anything but fun watching our national team play since Euro '96. They never fail to dissapoint.

I'd never even heard of Rekik before, but then I don't follow the Dutch competition closely, exactly for the reason you mention: low quality.

Edit: just realised I don't even know if he plays for a Dutch club

Haha he was loaned to PSV for two seasons when he was still a Manchester City player. Then he was sold to Marseille and now he plays in Germany somewhere I think.

England put me to sleep, i actually think they have gone backwards. I honestly think they will struggle to get out of the group stages again in the world cup, they look like a group of players that lack any kind of football intelligence. They know how to play football but at the same time they don't, if you know what i mean.

Kane's a goal scoring machine, but outside of that i don't think he will have a Ronaldo affect for England, he just isn't as intelligent as a footballer. Dele Alli looks lost for England, he look's like a Championship player. He's another that doesn't seem to do much outside of scoring goals, and even that doesn't happen for him for England. Rashford is all about speed, he has his moments but overall, he's another one that doesn't use his football brain enough. Out of all of England's players tonight, the only player that looked like he had a football brain was Maguire. He moved well, he positioned himself well, and he played intelligent passes.......and he's a CB, you want your midfielders and attackers to be doing this. I actually think he's a better ball playing CB than golden boy John Stones.

I can understand why Southgate called up Sturridge. He may not necessarily deserve a spot in the team, but he's the only that will offer something different.

England are in need of a few footballers that actually understand the game. They need a player with a football brain like Fabregas, Eriksen, Xavi or Silva. I'm not saying players of this quality, but the type of player who has a football brain like they do.

I don't think I've seen so many sideway passes as I have watching England....When  Henderson receives the ball he is looking sideways or backwards.

bored bored bored

I take your point about going backwards though think we can't properly judge until the first tournament is over, I admit the signs are not promising.

Sometimes I think we need a few of the lesser known players in the squad with a football brain and correctly directed anger, like Matt Ritchie for Newcastle.

watched the u17s today and they are far more entertaining to watch than england seniors lol. embarrassing how poor players are when they put on that england jersey.

As Scott says, we need some intelligent footballers; that’s why most of them look good for their clubs, because they’re surrounded by them, but at international level they’re on their own. No clever movement or passing, lots of sideways and backwards passes, and generally looking frustrated at the static teammates ahead of them, when they’re used to looking up and seeing movement.

It’s times like this I’m thankful for my French heritage and I can support someone good when England inevitably crash out :laugh2:

It will not matter how strong or weak the group is, I'm with you, I don't think we will progress past the group stages. Our midfield is shockingly poor, no creativity or skill. Harry Kane receives absolutely no service at all.
