Billy Gilmour

Featured Replies

No way should billy go to the Rangers.  That’s a sh*t hole league, below the Championship in terms of quality. We should keep him in our squad and give him playing time here and there.

I certainly wouldn't loan him out - Gilmour is a genuine talent, potentially the apotheosis of our brilliant youth system (from which we are finally seeing on-pitch dividends), and covers two position in which we sorely lack quality depth. He's more multifaceted than Jorginho and should realistically be getting most of his minutes off the bench.

Frank should give him time and he'll see why we all call him the Deep-Fried Dunga.

With Kante having a niggle and banned for the next match it’s time to give billy a run to see if he can  dictate a game from the centre of the park

Please don’t overhype him city dropped back in the second half and have him miles of space. Had city gone for it he would have been pressed and bullied just like the rest.

Whose over hyping him? I’m just saying we need to see what he can do. Who do you think we play there instead then Jorghino?

Exactly.

I'll admit, it was easier second half with City comfortable and having taken their foot of the gas but at least he showed something. Always looking for the ball and being proactive. HAS to start now ahead of the likes of Kovacic, Jorginho and Kante who have done nothing this season.

Harsh on Kante.

Everyone is hyping him up thinking he’s the solution to our midfield he’s the next Xavi after the Liverpool game last season.
He’s good young talent but fans needs to taper their expectations and don’t put undue pressure on young players after one decent performance.

Didn’t matter who played in that midfield today city player’s and tactics  were on another level they would have ran rings around him too you are just moving the problem from a senior player to a young player.

I'd give him a start against Fulham. Clearly worthy of an opportunity, however it's January now and he still has half the league minutes of Loftus-Cheek, who hasn't played for us since his single hour-long appearance in October.

Perhaps, but Kante is suspended now anyway.

Think he could do with a rest. He started well today and was nicking ball off City players and pressing well but then he got sloppier and sloppier and it turned into a game he'll want to forget.

Agree - Gilmour needs to be given the chance, and personally, I think that should be at Kantes expense.

Kante does 1 thing really well. Disrupts play and nicks the ball of people

Gilmour should be given the opportunity to also do that, and see what else he can add (forward passing?!)

I think Gilmour did okay against Morecambe but he really didn't have any of those Kante-moments where opponent crashes forward and he just has to track back. What I like about Gilmour is he has vision of how an attack could form. Kante is more of a play-as-you-go type of creator.

After the covid break last term he faced Leicester and he was found out multiple times. It was after his injury but still.

I’ve never seen such a young midfielder who play like he does. Maybe I’m too hyped but damn, he really can play with the vision he has.

I’ll be very surprised if he doesn’t become world class in a few years time, he has everything you want from a deep lying playmaker.

Out of all young players we have, Gilmour is the one for me. Mount, James and Hudson Odoi are looking like they will turn into Chelsea best players eventually but there’s something special about Gilmour. Something you don’t see very often.

I still think if he hadnt been injured last season we would have sold Jorginho and he would definitely have played a bigger part this season, he plays a great role for us.

Agreed. I think assuming injuries don't hurt him he will at least get to Jorginho's level and perhaps even higher. Scotland should be very exited.

The one thing I worry about is whether physically he can manage over the long term in a modern midfield. He is a bit short and maybe a bit noodle armed at the minute. Hopefully he gets a bit of a grow on soon.

The first lockdown completely messed him and us up, it may have been only two games but he completely transformed the side and the vibe/momentum brewing in the camp was brilliant, and it was felt within the fanbase aswell.

I think he caught the Merseyside teams a little by surprise, they offered him space and time on the ball and he had the ability to impact the tempo of our play. The challenge for him now is to adjust to teams actually preparing for him and offering him less time on the ball and cutting off the passing lanes somewhat similar to what happened to Jorginho after a few games with us.

I think he has the ability to adapt and he seems to be more mobile then Jorginho whereas Jorginho is clearly better at his positional awareness. I would be interested in seeing Billy and Kante play as the 2 Central midfielders in a 4-2-3-1 because I think that combination could really work with Billy being the natural CDM and Kante having a more dynamic role in that position.

Everton for sure (gave him space) but Liverpool most definitely didn't, i remember him playing out under pressure a fair few times.

I'm not sure how effective he'll be in a pivot, on paper him and Kante is ideal but in practice i'm not convinced. Billy's most effective when is the sole DM/DLP where he can tuck into little pockets and pick out a teammate in space quickly which in turn starts an attack before the opponents are in shape (main case in point Pedro's second goal vs Everton) and when need be tuck in between the two CB's (very undderrated in the modern game, a DM good at that gives more creative freedom to the fullbacks), i don't think he's anywhere near as effective in other positions.

I think the calls are for the transition to a 4-2-3-1 as with 4-3-3 things have gone a little stale with a lack of creativity from midfield, I said it would be interesting to see Billy in that role mainly by default. Kova, Kante & Mount all seem to be more suitable to the box to box role therefore it leaves Jorginho and Billy for the 2nd CDM role and with Billy being more mobile I would like to see him  partner Kante and gain that experience.

He is still developing as a young player and will most likely adapt to any role in midfield if coached in the right way.
