February 8, 20215 yr He doesn't attack the space well despite having better physical attributes than Alonso. He is more of a left winger at LWB when Alonso plays the LWB role more like a left-sided forward. The thing with Alonso is he makes stupid runs into the box but because he has good finishing, he'll score more often.
February 8, 20215 yr Alonso is ahead of him at the moment in this system. He doesn't know how to attack Chilwell he looks lost
February 8, 20215 yr Bit too early to be judging after two games in a new system under a new coach. I do imagine that Chilwell will also have been shaken up by Lampard's departure more than most given he was the one player Lampard asked for in the summer. I think there will be times we play with a four as well and he'll get more a showing then. No doubting it'll be challenging for him though given Alonso is a specialist at the role.

Yeah people think Tuchel is Conte. He's not. We probably won't always play with wing backs.

I think he is one of the modern managers who tries to stay one week ahead of the opposition's video analysts by having multiple options up his sleeve. A back four will be part of that at some stage before the end of the year.

I wouldn't say that, he got a good sense of space and position in attack. Yesterday towards the end he made a great run into the box, basically like striker because Giroud and Timo were taken off. If the ball from Mount i think or Kante would have been crossed better you can be sure he would have buried that. It stuff like this i like about him because he is not afraid to make those unusual runs. While others think it is reckless or whatever i would say he is brave, tries to influence the game and not just be there.
February 8, 20215 yr Chilwell seems better in a back four though the thing that worries me is the challenges he goes for in our penalty box. The Blades would have had a penalty yet we were saved by an offside, Chilwell did not know that at the time as he made contact from a silly challenge.

It wasn't even a foul, Sheffield bloke lost his balance and fell over his own feet. Would have been a total travesty if that had been given. Edited February 8, 20215 yr by yorkleyblue

Agreed. Also Chilwell did his job in that instance by holding a good line that ensured the player was offside in the first place. He doesn't look as comfortable as Alonso in the wing back role but that isn't surprising. Alonso excels in that position. Given time Chilwell may too. He is definitely superior to Alonso in a flat back 4.
February 8, 20215 yr I'm probably a bit harsh with Chilwell because I never really rated him highly to begin with. Still a young lad though and can improve. Defensively he's easily our best LB, but going forward I don't think he's all that to be honest, some areas he needs to work on. The number of times you see James on the overlap or whipping crosses in compared to Chilwell for example. And Chilwell is much faster than James. Edited February 8, 20215 yr by Slojo

We have seen them given before, I think James of Utd is a specialist in getting penalties from similar positions.

He started the season attacking well, got in dangerous area and put in crosses, then he suddenly just stopped doing it. Edited February 8, 20215 yr by Scott Harris

Do you know if Leicester went from a back four to a three and if this coincided with his drop in form?

I'm sure you get the idea. Most of the Leicester fans I know think they absolutely mugged us in the Chilwell deal. Despite the excellent form of Castagne and Justin, I'm still convinced it's cognitive dissonance.

The thing is unless we get a break I doubt if TT will get enough time to work out who should play in the back four system and then get them to practise it. It will almost be like an A and B team, some players will be in both teams some just in one system.

I was trying to make some sort of Chilwell Alonso Stone of Shame/Stone of Triumph thing in response but it didn't quite work. I must admit when he was subbed last night i was thinking that if we pissed away 60m on Chilwell only for the new manager to just play Alonso that would be the most Chelsea thing ever. I reckon the price was steep but he has done much better than I thought he would. He'll play a role but he won't be a guaranteed first choice. I'd suspect that Emerson may be the big loser out of all of this.

It's a stupid run in the conventional sense because if the ball is intercepted, our left side is wide open to 2v1s. It's a double-edged sword. Wingbacks in general don't go into the box, they play more like secondary winger but Alonso plays it like a left forward. Why Alonso makes this work is like you said, his timing and finishing is good enough that it troubles the opponent.

Shows that he knows how to play the right system with the players he has instead of only a plan A fitting square pegs into round holes.

February 9, 20215 yr I think Chilwell needs a friend on the left side. Someone who can play 1-2's with him. Havertz tried it in a game but Chilwell completely ignored him. His weighted pass to Werner was a beauty. Problem for him now is he is always looking to cross it in the box but there is no food there. 1-2 and a cutback to advacing Mason is a great move. Not an easy one but the skillset is there.
March 5, 20215 yr Hasn't played as well as a wingback as he did as a left back, but hopefully he'll get used to the role (if this is Tuchel's preferred formation), as he's better than our other options there.
March 5, 20215 yr Agreed. He and Mount dominated the left side by quite a margine and his long balls to Werner worked really well most of the times as well. tbf it'd be much easier for Alonso to work along Mount on the left than with Werner as well. Edited March 5, 20215 yr by weetee
