Once he allowed him to cut inside he had several options and that was always going to make things tricky for Mendy. If you actually see the play - it was Kova who failed to read the run and was filling in for Rudi.. I fact alonso was the only one who saw the danger.

In the end we handed Liverpool both goals. Yes Salah produced a good finish but he got the chance cause we messed up.

I joked about it at the time of the shot but I think Liverpool actually do shoot from those distances as muscle memory against us because they use to do it as a tactic with Kepa in goal.

Rüdiger and Alonso interchange positions temporarily quite often though. There were a couple of players involved in that goal but Alonso started too late to fill out Rüdigers position, then even catches Salah just to stop defending right then and handing him a free spot to shoot directly at the goal which boggles the mind really. Then it's also Mendy that left the short post unsecured (which Kepa would have eventually covered because that's goalie 101 actually). Edited January 3, 20224 yr by weetee
January 3, 20224 yr Saved our behinds to keep the score level but I thought he could have maybe done better on the Salah goal. Now that he's away, we need to defend from the middle better as Kepa is a terrible keeper with shots from range

But Kova was caught flat footed watching the ball.. as for stopping to defend Salah - it was an insane piece of skill - most defenders would have expected Salah to cut in..
January 4, 20224 yr Excellent article on the Mendy and Kelleher saves https://theathletic.com/3048637/2022/01/03/analysing-mendy-and-kellehers-wonder-saves-and-the-importance-of-not-backpedalling?source=user-shared-article
January 4, 20224 yr I think a lot of people go for the ‘shouldn’t get beat on the near post’, which may be ok for a shot from the edge of the area but not about 4 yds. To totally cover the near post from that range leaves the far post open. Salah had positioned himself so he could go either side, give the eyes for far post and slotted beautifully in the near. Mendy covered as much as he could. Salah was just too good. Same for Alonso defending, Salah sold him beautifully as he would have most defenders. Things could maybe have been done earlier in the move to close Salah down or stop the ball getting to him but sometimes you have to say it was a fantastic move which was finished off by someone who is world class atm. Thats twice now in this past week I have praised Liverpool, namely Salah and now feeling unwell, in fact brought up a bit of sick in my mouth. Not going to do that again!!

But you don‘t leave the easiest way to the goal free for a striker because he could make something more difficult - world class or not. That was poor defending nonetheless, no way around it. Salah certainly is world class - eventually the most in form world class striker on this planet right now - but that was just an invitation.

Salah is top 3 in the world, (Personally I'd say top 1, but I don't watch Lewa or PSG). It happens. I saw that and just thought - I wish we had a player like that . Put Salah in our team, we win the title.

Crossing the ball with powerful headers to Messi's left foot, the only question remains why didn't anyone think of that earlier?!

February 6, 20224 yr Didn’t have a club and nearly gave up football a few years ago but look at him now! He never gave up and now look at all he’s won in the last 12 months alone!

Will he be back in time to have a chance to be a club world champion? Will we even manage to overcome Al-Hilal to give him that chance?
February 6, 20224 yr Chelsea is taking all the trophies. Let´s send Lukaku to Beijing to compete in Biathlon. That´s 10 missed targets, but at least he gets some shooting practice.
