May 30, 20215 yr He makes our defence more solid, even without anything to do. The simple ability to catch a cross breeds confidence in those on front of him. Only bit that look worried was in the last 10 mins when gundogan (i think) shot from the edge of the box, mendy was on his knees and would have been wel beaten. thankfully it went window. solid keeper. and a cracking story for the romantics

Ot makes all the difference to a defence having a keeper they trust. Agreed, to me there's an art to making goalkeeping look simple, and he's got it. You don't have to fly through the air making one handed saves to look impressive imo, I actually prefer a keeper getting his positioning correct, catching it or patting it down before claiming it. Your quality will be noticed through your clean sheets, decision making and calm demeaner rather than conceding corners through saving with the wrong hand to make it look spectacular.
May 31, 20215 yr Does the basics very well. His reach is important for us. There was a moment late on when Aguero chipped a cross with his left foot. It was high, but Mendy plucked it out of the air like a non event. I'm not sure Kepa reaches that one. Just one example on the difference he makes.
May 31, 20215 yr His perfectly timed pass to Chilwell around the 42min mark was Ballon d'or worthy on its own.

I actually thought he'd got the cross in then all of a sudden it was plucked out of the air by Mendy. Class keeper.
May 31, 20215 yr He has made a huge difference to our defence. He’s probably not the best keeper out there, but he has provided our defenders with the confidence they needed to become a world class defensive line. Probably the best signing this past season in terms of how it has strengthened us.

What do you call the keeper of the Champions of Europe with one of the best clean sheet record in the tournament if not the best keeper?

If you’re looking for an argument, you’re not going to get it. Read and understand what I’ve posted. He was never a keeper wanted by every team when we brought him in, still, he’s been so solid to give confidence and thus it’s been our best signing.
June 8, 20215 yr Well will need a good back up keeper in january to cover the ACoN. If we are going for the title at that point using Kepa for 2 months will sink us.

August 27, 20214 yr 5 years ago he was unemployed, now he's the best keeper in the world. Cech's a brilliant GK scout
August 28, 20214 yr Great display today. Six saves and overall very commanding in his box. Only question mark did he give Alonso a shout in the lead up to the penalty?
August 28, 20214 yr Should have knocked Alonso out clearing the ball but protected his team mate...lol jk. Outstanding keeper and leader.
August 28, 20214 yr Apart from that mixup with Alonso, a perfect game. Can't fault either for the incident, must be hell a lot of noises at the end of the field, and you rather both going for it than leaving it. The height and aerial ability of Alonso actually harmed Mendy on that occasion, again sometimes it's just bad luck. I'm sure Tuchel will make them work on that during training next week 😁
September 12, 20214 yr Made some excellent saves yesterday and arguably kept us in the game in that first half. Commands the area really well too. He's coming out and claiming a lot of crosses on top of the shot stopping. With every passing game he looks more and more of a bargain.

A few of us, me included, had our doubts when he first came in, however he has erased those and I would not swap him for another keeper out there. Top class, great leader.
September 12, 20214 yr To be fair when he first came in we were praying for someone who was simply competent. Fair to say that he's exceeded those expectations...

I was sure that we would try for Donnarumma this summer and thought Mendy was going to be viewed as a stop gap signing. Appears he's a bit of late bloomer and Cech and the scouting team deserve big props for signing him.
