Because moving forward, Boehly wants footballing people involved in the club. All evidence suggests Tuchel didn't want any outside help with the team. He wanted full control. This makes sense considering his falling out at Mainz, Dortmund, and PSG.

Wasn't it the opposite? Ala he wanted to be left alone to coach while the other aspects of the club were dealt with upstairs?

It's quite ironic that Roman found his perfect manager at the very end.

I think the All or Nothing series for City and Arsenal showed how involved a director of football is with the team and has loads of influence, which makes sense.

This specific role seems to have been vacant at Chelsea for as long as I can remember.

Quite surprised we haven’t seen more of a bounce so far.
New manager usually brings new ideas, new energy and a certain eagerness to impress amongst the players but against RB and Palace I could only describe it as a continuation of our struggles under TT despite the late win on Saturday.

Hopefully we see improvement against Milan tomorrow.

Our midfielders need to be retrained in the system or changed. That's the most crucial problem right now.

Our attackers need more practice on making creative plays or run better offensive drills

Our midfield needs surgery.

- Jorginho has huge physical limitations.

- Kante + Kovacic are poor in the final third and are injury prone. They miss half the season considering their injuries and the time it takes to get back to full sharpness.

I'd say all three need replacing .

I agree but it's the middle of the season. That's the best solution for now before Jan and June comes along

This.

Hence no bounce. This will need deconstruction and rebuilding in certain areas. Regardless of our thoughtsa on it i fully expect to see Silva, Jorginho, Kante and Kovacic either shipped out or marginalised. Still not sure about Kouli either, whether he will fit the profile.

I think Potter will create a very different midfield and it may be ugly for us at times to start with. Arteta's team had a glass jaw for a number of years but now he looks like he has found the formula or starting to.

But i do think some left field (unexpected) signings along with players currently on the fringes coming through such as Carney, Casa, CG and we could start to look a very different proposition.

Frankly, I am just at the stage that i want to be entertained. I am fed up with sterile, patternless and gutless keep ball. I just want to see attractive entertaining football for a while. There is enough sh*t in everyone's lives lately, just want an entertaining diversion, not a bl00dy stomach ulcer.

One thing I’m interested in is to see is Potter is a “winner”. Roman, traditionally has only ever employed winners…people have previously won big trophies prior to coming to Chelsea.

I was watching All of Nothing Arsenal and while Arteta seems like a decent manager, I wonder if he isn’t a winner. I mean, how long do you need to “build” something? Arteta has been building for 3-ish years now. Tuchel turned us into CL winners within a few months. The worry would be if we continue with Potter despite him not being a winner.

Even though I still would have preferred tuchel to stay, I am down to give potter 3ish years to build something. Our previous model of firing and hiring ‘winners’ worked in the first decade of Roman’s era but it hasn’t done us any favours in the last decade. We’ve gone from a team that challenges for the league to one that fights for top 4 every season. Man City seem unstoppable atm with haaland and I think the only way to reach them is for us to try something new. Something like actually building a team versus firing and shopping for new players every 2 years. I would have loved for us to do that building with tuchel but since he’s gone I hope potter is backed all the way.

But is the drop in quality related to the quality of players or the hiring/firing of managers? It feels to that our recruitment over the last few years has been poor - I.e not buying top quality but second rate players/risks. If we got the recruitment right then would we be closer to the top?

I think they have an effect on each other. If you're chopping and changing managers every couple of seasons to win, you're more likely to try and sign the flavour of the month because you want to win as soon as possible. That didn't end up working well with us for Lukaku as well as several of our players that haven't done well.

Agree, it is combination of both.

IMO our problem started in lamp 2nd season when we decided to splash on 3 attackers when we need a dm then it got compounded when Tuchel decided to go for win now mode in rom. This summer, it was another short term view transfer again.

We need to stop this short term fix. Have a plan and then just slowly build the team.

On my knees, actually enjoyed a Chelsea game I could cry. Still a lot to be improved on and I'm not being overly critical we still needed two defenders to score us goals. One thing I'm certain Aubameyang and Sterling will get us goals, Mount will recover some form and contribute and Havertz will chip in with goals. Nkunku deffo will be a big help to this squad no more average attackers.

Kovacic needs to be more adventurous with his passing, I saw a good few opportunities to play an attacker through and he chose the wrong option, that goes for a lot of our players but in the pivot it's essential these players play the through ball when possible. Players like Sterling and Aubameyang thrive on these kinds of plays and ironically Potter seems like the kind of manager where Timo would have enjoyed since we play a lot more direct.

Very good start my Potter I can already see what you are trying to do and I'm impressed long may it continue. I loved TT but I accepted a change was inevitable after the dust from the sacking settled and games like today almost justify the decision (still way too early to determine). Brighton played so well under Potter these last 2 seasons and if he can bring that over to Stamford Bridge I am quietly confident we can build something special.

He now has a squad full of 'superstars' who if utilised right could produce some very good footballing performances.

Agreed. I really don't understand why Tuchel was so reluctant to play Trev the last 6 months or so he was here. He may still be raw and he makes a few mistakes, but he has generally done well when called upon and he will likely only get better with more playing time.

So far he upgraded our pressing in high zone. We looked very good tactically, we succeed to win many balls on Milan's half.

At least until late in the second half I didn't think we pressed very high at all. Milan had the majority of the possession yesterday and us being quite happy to sit deep when defending is what I saw.

To compare it to former managers who used a back five I would say it was similar to how we played under Conte but not that similar to Tuchel.

Judging by how the handled the same player last night I’d go with Trev > Wes too.

I always find it a bit lazy when people say that about our wingbacks when we play 3-4-3. Just look at the average positions of our wingbacks. They're higher than our central midfielders virtually every game. Yet it's always said we need more goalscorers from midfield, but when our wingbacks score, it's defenders scoring and unsustainable. Time to accept that in this formation players like Chilwell and James don't play as defenders.

I still agree with your point about our attackers though. They need to be more productive.

Fully get where you're coming from blue and its really your last sentence that I'm getting at. We cannot go through a season relying on wingbacks and cbs to score. 1-2 injuries and you have a repeat of last season. I'm still optimistic PEA and Raheem show their quality these are two world class players.

I'm willing to give both Ziyech and Pulisic time under Potter, but I think it would be best to probably move both on in the summer. I'm happy for Kai and Mount to compete with Conor and another forward like Nkunku who is elite. I keep saying one elite playmaker/creative mid and I think the attack is there.

Then we need to restructure our midfield at least 2 elite signings in there are needed imo but ag the very minimum one is a necessity. Resolving Kante and Jorgi contract situation is important too.

We had less possession (until Jorginho came on), and looked better for it, more solid defensively and in attack. Able to counter more often, and less open to be countered. We need to do similar in the league, but it’s tougher against Epl teams who are only interested in countering us. It going to be interesting watching GP try solving this problem, leaving Jorginho on the bench may be the sign GP understands having large amounts of possession was not working for us against teams that just want to counter us.

It's a step back though.

Unless you can control the possession and thus the games you will not be competing for the biggest trophies in this day and age. That's how we won the Champions League in '21 and that's why Manchester City are so utterly dominant.

Despite the good result I think the '21 version of our side would have trashed us yesterday if we were facing eachother.

I can only think you didnt watch any of the CL play off games and final, as we certainly did not get through because we had possession, not even close.

As for the 21 version trashing us, I can only imagine this is some kind of hilarious joke.
