We absolutely have to keep hold of Mount. Just keep hold of him.

Do we? We have plenty of good options there and Mount hasn't played consistently well in a while.

Obviously, I would hate to see him in a Liverpool shirt, but if someone was to make a big offer I wouldn't say no, we probably do need to start making some good sales at some point.

I think we need to hold of a proper Chelsea boy. He is very talented and his numbers are pretty good for us apart from maybe this season. I also like his attitude and persona.

Here is the thing though, if he really is "proper Chels" then he will come to an agreement over a new deal.

JT and Lamps had many offers to leave the Bridge, they did not until their careers had winded down, they were/are proper Chels. Is Mount?

That should never be close to the biggest factor in deciding about a player anyway.

It's a (very nice) bonus but that's it.

My stance is Potter out but am now willing to give him till the end of the season.

8 wins 2 Draws 4 Losses is for me the minimum he should meet to stay in the job.

If he gets us the CL, definite stay till halfway next season.

A proper Chels wouldn't have stalled the contract this long. The fact that he had a salary bump was good enough given the fact how horrendous he is this season

Ahh yes, half a season writes off the previous 150 games he played for us. How could we forget!

That dastardly scallywag should be happy with £20k a week and a mars bar if he's proper chels.

Players seen as "proper....[fill in the blanks]" switch clubs anyway, it happens regularly. It's a job for them, and if the atmosphere feels right and the money is good, why not sign for a different club. If stars align, even I would start working in Rotterdam instead of Amsterdam.

My BFF Joe Cole - first a proper Hammer, then proper Chels - signed for Liverpool, but screamed himself hoarse when we won the CL.

Maybe if we didn't sing "he's here, he's there, he's every f*cking where" he wouldn't have switched clubs so many times. Love Joe but he's not the sharpest spoon in the drawer, maybe he thought he was fulfilling a request

The pay thing is a strange one in that footballers on top clubs get paid massive wages and when do they say I’ve enough.
Id imagine if a Chelsea player was getting 200k/week and was really happy with that but then their agent would promise a 250k/week contract elsewhere. Agent would then be getting in their head suggesting that the player in paying Chelsea 50k/week just to play for them and are they f**king mad.
Agents I believe cause a lot of the unrest in footballers around contract time.

Also I think players compare themselves with other players, thinking I'm better than him, so I should earn more, too.

Fair points Val, though I believe we decided we did not want to keep Joe and he had to find a new club.

If we are doing the same to Mase then fair enough, however by all reports we want him to stay and have made him very good offers to stay. He has yet to take them, so that is why I compare him more to JT and Lamps because we wanted them to stay and made them very good offers to do so throughout their careers, and saw them turn down large pay days at City in JTs case and Real and Inter in Lamps cases.

The economic benefit to a lad earning £40k/yr and moving to the competition for £50k/Yr even if he loves the old job and people more is one that can never be surpassed or compared to a lad earning £5m/yr and wanting £10m/yr to stay in said loved job or move to the competition who are ready to pay.

I'm the ultimate fan of its just a job and fans should let players decide to make a move as they deem best for themselves or their families but it is good to see how this one plays out as it is a stark reminder to fans that the same way you view these players especially the so called home grown ones, apart from that particular criteria ie home grown, nothing else should matter. They are just like every other player.

And no I don't think a player should go into his next contract getting a huge bump in pay if he has been below par in last 12 months of said contract because he was above par in initial 36 months.  You are only as good as your last game and we typically see players turn it up in last year of contract or when looking for a move for this exact same reason.

Shape up or ship out.

Chelsea a dangerous animal after stunning goals at Leicester; Arsenal deliver mind-blowing display, says Paul Merson

Chelsea are a dangerous animal, they’ve got some unbelievable players and they just need to click - at times against Leicester they did.

Bad teams don't score the goals like they did, two of them were unbelievable. Kai Havertz's flick has to go down as one of the goals of the season, you're not seeing that on a Sunday morning.

It was an outstanding week for Chelsea, with wins over Leeds, Dortmund and Leicester, and now with Everton at home next they can get on a roll. Football is a funny game how it can change so quickly, you've only got to look at Liverpool losing at Bournemouth.

Graham Potter has switched to three at the back and it's working. It's taken a while for him to get it right but it's 100 per cent better than with four in defence.

And he still hasn't got Reece James. Ruben Loftus-Cheek filled in for him on Saturday and played well but when James comes back you've got one of the best of the business along with Ben Chilwell on the left. You've got to get your wing-backs high up the pitch and James and Chilwell are very good attacking players.

Mateo Kovacic has come back recently, I'm a massive fan of him, and playing alongside Enzo Fernandez in midfield. Then Potter can pick any three from seven options up front that can cause havoc to anybody. Don't forget, Thiago Silva isn't playing either. James and Silva are Chelsea's two best players.

Marc Cucurella has done really well recently. Sometimes he can dive in, if you're doing that in his position on the left of the three then there's a safety net behind you if you don't win the ball. For all three of the central defenders, there's a safety net for them from each other.

If the Champions League quarter-final draw goes their way, bar Man City and Bayern Munich, I don't think too many teams will want to play Chelsea. If they don't meet those two then I think they'll get through to the semi-finals.

Think he missed Napoli off his list.

Would have been better for our chances hard PSG beaten Bayern and RB Leipzig beaten City.

Anything is possible at this stage, all 8 teams have some fantastic players. Merson getting excited is a good sign.

The salary bump+extension already shows the club appreciates his contributions.

20k/week is 80k/mth. That's more than some of the lower table team's salary, some of the Bournemouth players are making 4k a month iirc.

It's not like he earns pittance either, he's on about 4m/year not counting brand deals, image rights etc. To want to triple his salary based on the current showings is a bit much

Napoli are very good this year, I wouldn't be surprised if they won the whole thing

Them, Real, Bayern and City are all exceptionally tough draws. Better for us if we face one of the AC, Inter/Porto or Benfica and end up in the side of the bracket with the other 2, while Real, City, Bayern and Napoli get each other.

2012 showed anything is possible for us indeed.

Any of the sides left will give us 2 tough legs, though I feel Napoli, City, Bayern and Real are a step above Milan, Inter/Porto and Benfica.

If we could draw say Inter/Porto, and then face the winners of Ac vs Benfica, I would say we have a fair shot at making the final.

If on the other hand we draw Bayern, and 9f we were to overcome that mammoth task be rewarded with the winners of Napoli vs City, I think we would need as much luck and grit as we had in Munich in 2012...

I mean I think City will win the game but you do realise the second leg is tomorrow? 😄

Can’t agree more. In the end of the day it is like any other job and contract negotiation is a normal stuff.
