Joao Felix

Featured Replies

First two minutes into the game Felix should have either put us 1 up or got in front of the defender, initiated contact and had Madrid down to 10 men (same way Rodrygo did to Chilwell).

Once again saying it, absolute bang average footballer but does a flick and has an exciting name so is rated highly.

I'm not even a striker, let alone a professional footballer, and even I commented to Don Antonio at the time why Felix didn't cut inside so Alaba was behind him.

Thierry Henry asked the very same thing post match.

Its weird because I've got a lad i play with in my team who's 19 that does exactly this. Body in front of the player, take the contact and either bounce the player or go down for the foul. How can a 19 year old steelworker do it but someone on £350k a week and trained in football everyday of their life for the last decade and a half not? Blows my mind.

A vastly overrated player, because he can do a few neat tricks

The version of him we are crying out for is the one that scored 20 goals and had 11 assists in 2,864 minutes in his only full season at Benfica.

The version we have seen since then, at Atletico and here, is far less effective, but is still putting up numbers comparable to (actually better than) what Nkunku delivered at PSG, and initially in Germany at the same stage of his career.  It is only in the last season and a half that Nkunku (at age 24/25) has exploded. Maybe the same will happen with Felix ? 23 is still quote young in terms of a football career. In terms of how Boehly is viewing "potential", I can see why he might be interested in signing him permanently, and he does provide flashes that warm the heart for anyone who celebrates the "beautiful game".  Jury still out for me though.

Nkunku was playing as a WB at PSG under Tuchel though. The “potential” angle would only make sense if his underlying stats stood out. He has more yellow cards than assists in his career, averages less than 1 key pass per game through, and there is also that stat from the Liverpool game where Kante a midfielder created more big chances than him. What takes the cake though is he made ZERO defensive pressures v Madrid, and has done that in 2 other games. Those are damning stats, and any well run club will steer clear of him.

I watched the match with my mates. Now we are in our 30s and early 40s and play in the lower leagues, just for fun. When Joao Felix chose to kill that chance by that incredibly stupid decision, we all had the same reaction hahah. Could not believe a pro footballer in a UCL QF did not do the basics and the easiest and obvious choice and cut across. Militao would have been in no man's land there, it's either a 1v1 or a red card if the defender chooses to make the simplest of contacts. It's football basics. Baffling decision really.

Bundesliga stats don`t mean much though. Look at the quality of players that manage to get double digit goals per season in the Bundesliga. Much harder to do it in Spain or England. Werner got 28 goals in 34 games before joining us from RB Leipzig. Havertz looked very good scoring goals for Leverkusen.

I am very wary of Bundesliga players and Nkunku is no exception. I don`t see the need for him either. Another one of these players with no real position that are hard to fit into a system. I miss the days of having a proper striker and 2 wide forwards/wingers with clear roles. Then add goal scoring threat from the midfielders (non-existant at Chelsea for years now). Sick and tired of the likes of Sterling, Havertz, Felix and Mount who don`t fit anywhere properly. It`s no surprise we can`t score goals week in week out.

Hang on - Werner was integral to us winning the champions league. Timo created hatfuls of chances in his time with us, and whilst he was wasteful, he contributed to 29 (i think that was the number) goals (scored or assists) during his first season with us. It was only when the rest of the team was floundering that he really started to struggle.

As I said at the time, we should have kept Timo. He could have done a job for us last night - CF, played down the middle, on the counter... He is perfect for that system.

That was one game according to the Transfermarkt player data. Is that data wrong ?

Very wrong.. came off the bench a few times to replace Meunier at RWB

Changed my mind on him. Don`t want us to sign him unless it`s for a very reasonable amount (below 50 million).

Yep, I'm the same.

It was only a few weeks ago he was looking really good but now he's just as frustrating as Havertz (and Sterling and Pulicic and just about every attacking player we have). Why sign another who flatters to deceive and delivers very little? Maybe a top coach (like Pep) could improve his game but we don't have one of those so no point spunking yet more money on a player who will give little return.

For me the question is, was he much better or did we just fall for new toy syndrome?

Think I read (after the Liverpool game so may have changed since) he's created one clear chance which if my memory serves me correct was Hall's missed sitter in the opening minutes of his debut at Fulham.

The guy turns a one on one into a difficult half chance.  Mount showed more in the last 10 minutes with 10 men than Felix has in the last 3 games.  Bench him and at least give one of our own young players some time to develop for the rest of the season.  This lad has nothing but a fancy touch.  Don’t want him even for free.

That’s probably right, but he had a really exciting debut against Fulham, and then a couple of very good games after he came back. He then has reverted to the same toothless, uninterested type of player we have in abundance. Was the first game a mirage or that quality has gone together with that of the rest of the players’ after spending a few months at Chelsea? I think that there’s a quality player there but him, like the whole team, looks broken, and probably thinking wtf? Like the rest of his team mates. We’ve seen many quality players losing their qualities this season, he’s no different.

I would bench him for this weekend, should have been benched a few times by now. He has few good moves every game to remind people he's a good player, yet when the big moment comes he usually fluffs. Given how low we have sunk, I rather have a Mount putting in effort and some end products than Felix.

Saw a stat that in the last 3 games he's played Felix hasn't initiated a single press against the opposition defence, I'll try to find the link. Another reason why Mount should be starting over him now.

He really hasn’t! The loan move wasn’t smart to be honest, I still don’t understand the thinking. We spent all that money in Jan to loan a player to block the progress of the new signings. When it wasn’t working, you would think we would have benched him since we don’t own him, but instead 3 managers have continued on the same path.

Could be part of the agreement he plays when fit and available.

No I think there is a world class player in Felix. He just need the right manager and team to bring it out of him and I believe we can.

If we can get him for a decent price then we should be all over it. I think people are overlooking how poor we are this season, no wonder Felix doesn’t look very good. A settled team and a great manager, he could very quickly become our best player. He’s still showing glimpses of his immense talent despite playing in a really disjointed team.

Can we stop throwing “world class” around because he certainly isn’t. Players have walked into average teams with average managers and uplifted those teams on their own. Tevez, Coutinho, James Rodriquez, even Lingard had that ridiculous loan spell at West Ham. He just doesn’t excel at anything. Finishing is and has always been poor, not a good passer of the ball, not a good creator, only dribbles in blind alleys.

I would hope the guys upstairs don’t make the mistake and further set us back;  we are stacked at LW, and he isn’t even a guy I am convinced can hack it as a LW in the PL. He also isn’t creative enough to give a free role, and there is also Nkunku to come in.

When and where? Atletico wanted rid for a reason.
