RIP Legend Gianluca Vialli

Featured Replies

Just a lovely bloke. The fact that he played football, played it well, and played for us is really just an aside. The world is a big place with a hell of a lot of people in it and we doff our caps to those who stand out as genuinely and utterly good. Luca was that.

Remember that Arsenal league Cup SF. His first game as a manager and he got us to Wembley. Fantastic

Vialli gave every Chelsea player a glass of champagne in pre-match dressing room talk before first game in charge

I don't suppose it'll happen, but I think it would be a fitting gesture from the club to re-name the West stand "The Gianluca Vialli stand". It was built during his time at the club and was the last element of rebuilding the stadium while Luca and co were rebuilding the team on the pitch. They laid the foundations for the success we were to enjoy in the years to come, a major part of which was Luca giving a young kid called John Terry his debut while he was manager, and we all know where that particular career took us.

A Chelsea legend in the truest sense of the word, but more importantly a great ambassador to the club and world football in general, and even more importantly than that, a great human being and a lovely man.

Come on Todd, let's do the right thing here and name the stand after a man who graced the area in front of it so beautifully.

Upon reflection, the 1996-2003 period which encompassed Gullit, Vialli and Ranieri was such an exciting period for the club.

  • Regular top 6 finishes where expectations were lower compared to the Abramovich era.
  • Winning cup competitions (2 FA Cups and a League Cup). Before 1997, we hadn't won major silverware since 1971 when Dave Sexton was manager.
  • Regular European football (won the Cup Winners Cup in 1998)
  • Signing big name foreign players (e.g. Vialli, Gullit, Zola, Desailly, Deschamps, Poyet etc.)
  • It's crazy to think that JT's first manager as a first team player was Luca, and this extended all the way up to Conte nearly 20 years later.

Vialli was arguably the face of this period, and brought us so many great memories that none of us will ever forget. Those memories will be cherished.

Fantastic time to be a CFC fan. So many great characters  in that team. Money had started creeping into football; they earnt a decent crust but were still normal and accessable; Di Matteo had a restaurant on the Fulhan Road and would happily spend time talking football to the patrons. IMO they were the last generation of footballers that were real men- the current kiss the badge ' it has always been my dream to play for Chelsea', living in their multi bathroomed Cobham houses, incapable of changing the wiper blades on their motors, don't even come close.

I’ve got something up on my dining room wall that my dad posted to the training ground one preseason in the slight hope Luca would sign for me. He didn’t expect a busy PL manager to take the time out from his day to even look at it but shortly after it left it was back complete with autograph.

It was only a small gesture for him to make but things like that mean so much to the fans, especially the young kids which I very much was at the time.

Back in 1997 as interviews were happening on the Wembley pitch ahead of the FA Cup Final, Luca was talking to I think Gary Richardson, he said he hoped that he could get a few minutes on the pitch once we were winning (words to that effect). Richardson said I think you’re a good bloke.

It’s always stayed with me because although I never knew him I understood exactly what he meant. I loved that team, the way we played, the characters we had and happiness they played with. Luca was part of an amazing time to be in London.

Obviously would like to send my love and thoughts to his family.

Rest in eternal peace x

Vialli, Zola, Wise, Petrescu, Desailly, Leboeuf, de Goey, Di Matteo, Flo and even a young John Terry. These players will always be special too me because they were my earliest memories of Chelsea football club. They made watching Chelsea fun, and no matter what rival fans say about our history before Abramovich, they can't take those memories from us. Vialli was a big part of this group and is rightfully called a legend by the fans. He gave us so much.
