Hernan Crespo would be the exception - he was superb for us (best movement I have ever seen from any striker) but unfortunately couldn't settle in London (wife's miscarriage plus scumbag machete-wielding burglars didn't help)

Crespo was quality. Could have been brilliant for us, but didn't he get a bit homesick, + don't think he figured in Jose's plans?

And Di Santo. A striker who just didn't ever look like scoring. Would still take him over Jackson though!

If I were argumentative, and while I love Crespo as the next fan, I'd pick out a few names there that were probably better during their time in a Chelsea shirt!

Crespo knew the offside line better than anyone and would have loved to have seen him with VAR! He would've got everything!

Fair enough Evissy, I used to do that on iPhone safari but since Twitter changed to X, it never worked again.

Completely agree, clearly our last three good no. 9s were Tammy, Crespo and Jimmy Floyd.

Fair enough, my memory is hazy when it comes to Crespo. I do remember him being decent, just not setting the league alight like Drogba or Costa did during their best periods. Crazy to think we've been so hit and miss with strikers. I still hate that we never got Aguero, but instead signed Torres. I always wondered what Aguero could have looked like up top for us. Imagine Hazard, Aguero, KDB. If only that could have been.

I often find similarities with Guiu actually. Not at the scoring level...just yet, but body language, that slightly crouching sprint, the enthusiastic energy. If we end up with a Crespo junior here, i'll be more than happy.

Does anyone else feel that Delap is a good signing, but we need a Gyokeres like signing? Delap is still an U-21 international player right now. I am hearing these noises about Utd and Gyokeres, which bemuses me considering where they finished last season. If Utd get Gyokeres, I would feel sick considering we are relying on a young talent like Delap to immediately settle in and start scoring.

To be honest, as weeks progressed i'm leaning more into raising the floor that moving the needle.

IE I am happy with Delap and simply want an improvement on Jackson.

a sorry state of affairs when Steve Sidwell is not the worst option to play up front out of that list!

He is a fighter i like that, probably won't see him on the floor a lot. Now Jackson knows he can be dropped and should be his absolutely best or be on the bench.

Crespo was a dream striker for Mourinho to play alongside Drogba, but neither the squad nor Mourinho were enamoured with a 2-striker system. A healthy and focused Crespo would have been much better than Shevchenko was in 2006-07.

As an aside I looked up some numbers for that season and while Drogba only hit 12 league goals, he got 14 assists. Hopefully Delap brings a similar team benefit.

Good signing, fix our need but does not really move the needle
