Diego "the guv'nor" Costa

Featured Replies

Chelsea striker Diego Costa has hit out at the English media for their unfair criticism of the Brazilian.

The former Atletico Madrid striker has a notorious reputation but he feels that he has been treated unfairly by the people in England.

The Chelsea star was recently banned for his antics against Arsenal and he says that although his behavior was not the best others are allowed to get away with it.

Costa also explained that he is a normal guy off the pitch and that the papers have criticised him at every opportunity. He also claimed that football is a contact sport and incidents like the Koscielny eye gouge happen all the time.

“Football has always been a contact sport, these things have always happened.

“But we are professionals and what happens on the pitch stays on the pitch. So after the game it’s all good. But if I keep getting banned for three games, it’s going to be hard to maintain my level.”

The Spanish international claimed that he has replaced the former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has the country’s footballing villain now. The Uruguayan was a controversial figure during his time at Anfield.

Ranging from his racist abuse towards Manchester United defender Evra to snubbing a handshake, biting Chelsea’s Ivanovic and obscene gestures towards other fans, Luis Suarez has done it all.

The Barcelona striker had previously claimed something similar and said that his aggression is what drives him on the pitch and that people misunderstood him.

Diego Costa has now gone down the same route and has decided to have a swing at the British media.

“I think Luis Suarez left this country because of how he was treated and made out to be the bad guy. Do I feel like I have taken his place? That is crystal clear. It is obvious that there are people after me. If you do something wrong and it makes the papers, then okay, that’s fair.

“But when people are after you all of the time, when you’re always the headline that’s not fair. I hope they’re not after me. I hope it’s not the case. I hope it’s something that’s just in my head.”

“The critics have to carry on what they do but they should always be truthful. If I do something wrong, I am the first one to accept the criticism, I have no problem with that.

“For example, my behaviour in the game against Arsenal was not the best, I know that. But it was not just me. There was someone else involved.

Furthermore, he also explained how he gets treated by the opposition players on the pitch and he has never complained.

“Many, many times I get kicked, I get elbowed — that’s part of football. It happens on the pitch but I never complain. Football is a contact sport and people have to understand they can’t change it into theatre.

“Fans from a lot of clubs come up to me,” he revealed. “They joke around, ask for a picture and tell me who they support. But everything is always done in a nice way.

“When people see me off the pitch they can tell how I am and there is nothing to be worried about.

“When I’m on the pitch, that’s my job, that’s my work. I have got a reputation. When I’m off the pitch, I’m a normal guy.

Finally, he also expressed his affection towards the Premier League and explained how the atmosphere and the intensity make it a complete package, despite the drawbacks.

“This is a beautiful League to play in, you have to give 100 per cent the whole time.

“It is very respectful, the supporters are great and the grounds are always packed. There is a downside, like with many things in life, but I love this League.”

So much for him being unhappy and wanting to leave?

If anything he has made it clear that he feels the media forced Suarez out and will do so to him.

This is why I have no problem with Mourinho standing up to those in the media who over step.

Thought Costa gave a very good interview

It really bugs me how people in the media, football pundits and even football fans moan about Costa's behaviour. Do they watch what defenders do in every single game in the Premier League ? Defenders push, shove, elbow, and give as many digs to the strikers as they can get away with, why are they allowed to get away with it ? Why is it so wrong when a striker fights back ?

Because he's foreign. Look at Andy Carroll and how he was hailed when he looked half decent. Press were falling over themselves to praise a 'throwback number 9' as he bullied defenders and scored goals. I think Costa is portrayed as trying to be sly, but I dont think he is really. No more than any other striker who winds up opposition and tries to get away with it.

Obviously playing in blue doesnt help him much either. I disagree with him comparing his treatment to that of Suarez because i think Suarez was given a far easier ride despite committing far, far worse offences. He bites players and people would still stick by him by saying "yeah, but that's the price you pay to keep a world class talent". You dont get the 'but...' with Costa, just the condemnation

You know that saying "sorry mate, its business", same applies to the media. They need their stories to sell so the twist plots as much as possible as for pundits, most are either ex liverpool or arsenal players (no help there) only few (Gary Neville) give unbiased opinions. As for fans moaning, we are 19th behind Utd as the most hated club in the Uk. Means we're doing something right

I do think he gets a fair amount of support from some pundits, although it's usually followed by a "but".

Shearer loves him, I'm sure he see's himsrlf in him. He, of course, rarely got criticised when acting in a similar way.

Even Keown gave a veiled compliment after the Arsenal game.

He's really a lot slower than people gave him credit for in my view. Even when the opposition playing a high line, I never seen him speed past the defender, even the really slow ones. He's been frustrating this season to say the least.

What actually happened to Costa last night? Heard Jose saying he punched himself but i assumed that was a joke. havent seen reports anywhere of how he got injured, or what hes actually done other than vague reports of a 'rib injury'. is it likely to be serious?

Think he clashed with the keeper when challenging for a header but they didn't show any replays of it.

Looked like his ribs that he hurt which isn't good because there's little to nothing you can do to assist with rib injuries.

He was holding his kidney area, after what looked like a bit of a player sandwich. I didnt think at the time it looked bad at all. If he is missing for Liverpool that is not good.

He's a liability. He's a good goal poacher, if the ball is in the box and at his feet, but his hold up play is awful and he can't create a chance for himself most of the time. Thought we'd finally found ourselves a world class striker after all the goals he got last year, but maybe he's been found out, like Kane has been this season.

hey guess what? after all the negative press we've been getting, here's a good news story to cheer you all up  :JC_doubleup:

http://www.espnfc.com/chelsea/story/2692865/diego-costa-could-face-fa-charge-for-martin-skrtel-incident

:face_palm:

There was nothing in that incident. Absolutely nothing at all.

Didnt stop MOTD dedicating as much time to it as they did to Lucas' 2nd yellow that wasnt given. If Costa gets banned for that it's a ridiculous witch-hunt

No one on this forum is Skrtel's biggest fan but what he did yesterday to him will cost us because the FA will look at it, but it's also rather pathetic. He's a 27 year old man, not an eleven year old in the school yard, he should know that despite the fact he has a bad temper what he's doing is utterly ridiculous. To give another professional a kick in the chest like that when he's in a vulnerable position is not only very dangerous but it's just so so childish and I lost a lot of respect for him yesterday. People may see it's just passion and frustration at losing, but kicking someone which will eventually hinder his team in the next few weeks is the opposite of passion

Think his injuries have gotten the best of him, as Torres and Falcao before him. Curse of former Atletico strikers? Anyway Diego is not a top striker anymore, and becoming more of a liability with his silly acts that lead to bans.

All a shame really because he is still one of the players you have no doubts gives it his all. He just does not have as much to give as before.

I thought he played well yesterday, his hold up play for the Ramires goal was excellent. His service is shocking though and I could feel his frustration when Oscar couldnt even play him through on goal when he had acres and acres of space. Instead the ball just rolled all the way to Mignolet. We have a striker that trives on balls in behind the defence and crosses, yet we have nobody with the ability to play a pass between the keeper and the backline and a manager that makes sure we dont have a right back or left back capable of getting to the byline and putting a cross in. Biggles the mind really

Look like another ban is coming up. Whether it was deliberate or not, it looked ugly, and the FA won't be able to wait to ban him again. I like him, but he got stop taking matters into his own hands. The other 19 strikers in the league got bad tackles or knocks too.

I hope he is sold off to the highest bidder.

Time and time again he acts the thug and gets a ban, deffo another one coming his way.

I would have said this last season if it was as frequent as well, he is a liability.

sadly this is the fact now....a ban waiting to happen.
