Antonio Rudiger

First welcome to our second summer signing.

Second is why are we talking about it being so hard to displace our back 3? First half of the season, just like Diego I guess, our defence were magnificent. But then the second half came and how long did we go without clean sheets? Any of the 3 could be replaced and I am hoping at least 2 are by both our new signing and the returning Andreas. Either with Dave or if Dave can learn to play wingback him replacing Moses and then leaving a spot for Luiz or Cahill.

He isn't, he was vice captain last season and captained the side through Terry's absence.

That's what I mean - he was captain for much of last season and in all probability, will be captain in the forthcoming season.

Can't agree with that he is good he is recovering from 2 serious injuries romas defence is as good as ours or better he was a German international at 20 I just don't know where that's coming from, ability wise id start him over Garry from the get go

Actually, Roma's defence has been their achilles heel for the past couple of seasons in the Serie A and in Europe as well.  The EL match against Lyon was a typical one where they had lapses in defence.

We'll see whom Conte prefers when the Charity Shield match rolls around - it will be interesting to observe.

great price, okay player, okay transfer. hope he prove everyone wrong and go on to become a solid starter

Most of us have high hopes. So I hope he does not prove anyone wrong, just meets the expectations

Any German football fans that could give us a little more insight into his style?

Not through German Football, but I have seen him play for Roma a bit.

To keep it real simple: he is a lot like Zouma albeit with actual passing/ball holding skills (even over does it sometimes).

They have the best defence in the league after juve in number of goals conceded?

I was impressed with him in the Confederations Cup. He was calm when defending and played the ball out of defence with ease. He had no issues playing the ball into midfield and didn't look fazed when attackers tried to stop him passing it about. He would just lift the ball over their heads or curl it around them. He was easily Germany's best defender. If you compared him to Mustafi you would see just how different both players were in quality. Mustafi looked like he was all over the place at times and didn't look comfortable when defending at any point.

Agreed, I was very impressed with his with his calmness on the ball, but also happy to see he was intelligent enough to just get rid a few times, no real overplaying.

That means he is an upgrade on Zouma

He's a German international so of course he is, but I would love it if Zouma got back to the form, before his serious injury, which made him one of the very best young defenders in the Premier League.

Fair enough, I'm not so sure, let's wait and see.

The problem is that even if Zouma got back to his best, i still don't think it would be enough. I just don't think he suits the way Conte wants his defenders to play.

I read Rüdiger has had 3 knee operations and he's only 24, sounds a bit dodgy. Hopefully put those behind him now.

Very concerning.  Has probably hindered his development a bit.  If he can stay healthy there's much more room for him to grow.  Good thing Chelsea have a wonderful medical staff...don't think he would have passed his physical if there were big time concerns.

Can see him slotting into the RCB role and Azpi being moved to RWB if we don't buy anyone for there. Some of the key goals we conceded last year notably against Spurs were down to crosses to the back right post and Azpi/Moses missing a header, Rudiger would solve that problem. He can also play full back too if we switch to a back 4 at any point. Good versatile option and I must say I'm pleased (if he can stay fit)

Shame what happened, and I agree about not being technical enough for conte but he looked like becoming a beat, took to bog games no bother, play him in DM still did a job, what a brilliant prospect he was, really feel sorry for him.
