He's been really impressive since Tuchel came in. 

Back 3 seems to suit him. Much like David Luiz the formation seems to help cover his short comings. 

He's aggressive with his defending, likes to get out and make contact as quickly as possible. If you miss the tackle in a back 4 chances are there isn't going to be much cover. With the back 3 he generally has someone else to help out near by.

Azpi and Rudiger in that 3 can leave the line and aggressively press players back 20/30 yards up the pitch. Works very well, especially against teams like city who like to get players free in that half space area between central and wide. 

Must be a nightmare to play against us at the moment.

All the defence did really well. We were unlucky for me on their goal. Brilliant finish.

What a game by rudi. He has produced some bloody amazing CB performances in this champions league run,  but last night was possibly the best. In absolute beast mode.

Should have been played in at one point for a 1 on 1 with the keeper, having burst forward. Immense defensive performance.

TT really getting the best of him having previously been mismanaged and left to rot.

 

The mask clearly did its work, he was fearless.

He went from being the weak link in the defence, being so bad we’d jump at the chance to label him a villain over anything out of frustration, to an undroppable putting in consistently top class performances. Hats off to him, happy to be proven wrong, new system or not.

I read an interesting stat on him today.

Since Tuchel has come in the only match we have lost - WBA - was when Rudiger was not playing.

Has been great under TT, clearly he is at his best playing 3 at the back. I wouldn't like to see his Messi-like bursts forward if we were playing a back 4.

4 players of Leicester tried to keep him away and failed to stop him, what a beast.

He loves scoring against Leicester, another good performance by him. His aggression is a must, he is there to defend in football and outside the football.

really glad that tuchel gave him a second chance

And to think, he'd have been a shoe in to get booed vs Wolves had there been a crowd.

What happened to this guy? He went from terrible to fearless monster CB within a few weeks.
