Too right about the diving and cheating.  When the whistle blew for the penalty, I was convinced it was actually for the outrageous dive, and was stunned when he pointed to the spot.  The Luiz slight tug wasn't even the worst foul going on in our box at that time by both sides, let alone a penalty, given the way that our players had been manhandled in the Atletico box shortly before.  The major blight on game these days is refereeing inconsistencies.  I don't think they are corrupt, I think that the vast majority are just f**king useless.

I said to my wife at the time that this thread would be going into a blamestorming meltdown about Luiz, and, reading through, I see I was right.

The away fans were right behind the goal for the luiz pen Noone round me saw it or who it was, just looked like normal tussling, but all night the atletico players were going over like big wet blouses rolling around wasting time, but to be fair luiz won a free kick second half and he went down holding his face which was a bit embarrassing

I missed all of this match, as I was out with work at a brewery! Free food and beer at least!

At 1-0 down I thought the game was gone, I assumed it ended 1-1 when I looked around the 90 minute mark, came home to a wonderful surprise!!

A great win.

Hope you recorded it, because you won't want to miss it, not for the result, but for our performance, i make us title favs on that performance personally, and 3rd favs for the CL behind RM and PSG. and that's with my blue tinted glasses off and my betting head on.

I never realised how well we played until I got home and watched, I'm an advocate for live football as you see what's happening off the ball more but the away section is miles up and obscured by a net, doesn't make for great viewing. It was obvious we were dominating play but like I said didn't truly appreciate how good we were until I got back and watched it.

I think the last time I was this buzzing the morning after a game was Munich. The performance was THAT good. I suppose it helped that I had £20 on Chelsea, Utd and PSG all to win at 14/1!

Honestly, can't compare with the munich match. Coz that was a defensive performance. We rarely attacked. We didnt create a single chance I think. That Drogba goal was just pure magic. But yesterday, we dominated the match and created a lot of chances.

Such a dominating performance last night, absolutely thrilled.

We are really good and ATM are as good as people make them out to be.

Simply the fact, that these are 2 very similar teams, with very similar managers and qualities.

Last time we played them (CL 2 legs), they were better as they edged us out on the midfield battle (ramires and luiz against a very similar midfield) and now those 2 were replaced by  Kante and Baka. And I feel that is where we won the game.

This was the question I asked myself too.

Though from the kickoff, within 10 mins of play, I noticed Atletico Madrid was not closing us down like I know they are capable of. So I said to myself we should be able to pull a draw at least. What a win at the end!

I woke up this morning with a big grin on my face. Thank you Chelsea for that performance.

I'm not comparing the match, I'm comparing how I felt afterwards

Absolutely brilliant performance from the boys last night - what a result!! I've seen a few here give a couple of our players some stick (Fabregas/Luiz), which I think is so harsh! You don't go to a place like Atleti and win without all of your players performing well. It's a team game and everyone out there contributed to a great team performance! No one scored below and 7/10.

With the squad we have at our disposal I think 3-5-2 is now our best formation, and we should be playing it in all the big games - next up City! Come on you Chels!!!!

They were probably a little complacent to begin with, given their recent form, but once they saw they were up against a load of hungry lions, they couldn't raise their levels enough. They tried, though, clearly.

At several points they had seven or eight players in or around the box, trying to score.

They just couldn't handle it in the end.

There were a few occasions where I think it was Fabregas who mopped up some of the mistakes from others, chasing back (?). I think it was him, at least.

That was a huge statement made, against a team pretty much unbeatable at home in recent years. Many would have settled for the point, but Conte kept pushing the team forward, and deservedly got the result by the last kick off the match. Apart from the stupid penalty from luiz and couple of misses near the end , it's the perfect performance. I'm going to enjoy this victory for another day, not looking ahead to City just yet:biggrin:

You're right, he did. Loved that midfield trio together. Kante and Baka machines pressing the Atleti midfield, and Fabregas mopping things up and setting us on our way forward. Very similar the the very successful Juve midfield trio of Vidal, Pogba and Pirlo.

As good as our performance was, and it was sensational, I don’t think AM are as good as a couple of years ago. They have lost more talented players than they have gained and the average age is going up.

To say that is not to reduce the impact of beating them anfd they remain an excellent team.

Now or if only we can overcome the unfairness of the schedule and put in another top performance against citeh....what a week.

Just played this eight times in a row. Post of the night. You won't see a better post on this forum tonight!!

When they first cut to our crowd I love the guy in the centre, just above a steward in flouro, is standing still looking bored whilst everyone else goes mental.

They couldn't really press us as efficiently I think. We always had an extra man in every part of the pitch. Had they pressed us from the off, they'll be tired by the hour mark and the scoreline could have been more than 2.

Simeone changed formation twice I think.

I had my doubts going into this fixture. It's a big test, and could easily lead to the unravelling of some teams, but without wanting to go overboard, this was a really mature, professional performance and demonstrates just how far the team has come under Conte. There's no denying Jose's record for us, but I've never seen Chelsea play away from home like that. I would go as far to say that a Mourinho team would not (or could not) play like that. We controlled most of the game on their own patch. I can't remember which years they were, but it reminded me of when Lazio and Inter came to the Bridge and played us off the park. They were miles ahead of us.

We now have the players and the know-how to play possession football whilst also being able to kill the game in an instant through speed, and individual skill. We've seen evidence of counter attacking football before under Conte, but this was something new.

A fully deserved win (credit to Simeone for admitting as much) and it's a promising sign going into the rest of the competition. Barring the slice of luck needed, our first 12-13 players are strong enough to win it. If Hazard, Morata, & Kante remain available for the latter stages, we will have a really strong chance of doing that. For me, those three are key and would get into any team.

(P.S - a mention must go to Alonso, who seems to get better with every game).

They need a proper striker again. They have that now with Costa.

Honestly, that was as good an away performance as you will see from any of the top teams playing at another top teams ground this season.

Watched the highlights again at lunchtime. Son is still buzzing from the game. He is currently watching the highlights!
