Olivier Giroud to Chelsea

He didn't sign a new deal, we activated a one year extension that was in his existing contract. He might still stay if his options are worse than being third choice here. Either way I wouldn't mind.

Fair enough..

Pretty much. He also seems like a generally great guy to have around.

Plus surely brings in no end of female fans...

There's a fine calf in those socks, that's all we care about in life...

If we can't buy a top goal scorer, this is a good option, especially if Abraham goes on loan or gets sold.

A bit unexpected, maybe? But Giroud has extended his contract:

Preserving his value. If AC Milan makes a u-turn then he'd be jobless for a bit and that's not a good look.

If he signed the contract then even if AC Milan don't buy him, he'll still earn a decent amount whilst chances of European football. If he does go, then the club earns a transfer fee.

Win-win situation

Don’t think it’s about the fee. Word is the club extended him to stop West Ham signing him as a free agent. Girouds agent has said Chelsea have promised to release him if there is interest from an overseas club.

I’d like to think the club just let a player who will be 35 in September leave for nothing, if they get the trade off of stopping a local rival signing him.

That's a good angle as well. It'd still be a win-win situation. Worse comes to worst we have a solid reliable 3rd choice striker.

I see rumours Milan want him and are closing in on a deal. I don’t get why he’d want to go play second fiddle to Ibra. He’ll play second fiddle here too but we just won champions league. He scored some big goals for us this year and will be missed if he leaves. Don’t see us getting lukaku Kane or halaand so I’d love to keep him around. Seems to mesh with the squad very well.

Why would he extend the deal if he went to AC in the end? He doesn't carry transfer value at all. His salary is what costs talking about Ollie.

Brilliant servant to the club and scorer of big goals. I am glad he chose to stay.

Because the only club looking at him atm is AC Milan. If he's a free agent, he's basically jobless. It's a good strategy for him really. With covid and everything it's not like clubs are flushed with cash for a 2nd choice close-to-retiring striker.

He'll probably leave by the end of the window.

He's not second fiddle here though, he is behind Werner, Havertz and even Abraham at times. He's barely played since Tuchel arrived. At Milan, he would get a lot more minutes on the pitch than he currently does with us.

He didn't though. From what I understand the club had the (one-sided) option to extend the contract for a year. No decision or input needed from the big striker himself. I guess the thinking on the club's part is that like this we might get a small transfer fee out of him, and should we not manage to sell him, we have a decent back up striker, who is a valuable part of the dressing room as well.

Seems like the agreement suits all parties from what I have read.

If you can believe that the agent came out with any club overseas can sign him for free, a domatic club would need to pay a fee. If no interest comes he gets another season involved with us and helping us.

Win win for all invovoled.

Seconded.

I wonder how those one-sided clause activation talks are held...

"Well, Oli, we're getting another year of your services."

"But I don't really wanna stay."

the it crowd vanity GIF

"...too bad. NEXT!"

Benzema picked up a knock, and Oli's just come on for France.  He may end up leading the line for France this Tourney.

He has a chance to gain some interest and increase his transfer fee, maybe even get more of a look from TT?

First goal was a peach last night and second was a strikers finish. Anytime hes played for us hes looked good..apart from when hes clearly been left out for ages. Even against arsenal he nearly scored. Wouldnt mind keeping him another season and playing him a bit more..he would get goals.
