August 9, 20187 yr His contact with Madrid runs into the summer of 2022. There is no buying clause inserted in the loan deal. So that is it.
August 9, 20187 yr Good signing for one season, will probably fit the system like a glove, but we’ll have to replace him in the next window....unless of coarse he can force a move. As someone else said, it’s a short term fix, a good one, but we’ll possibly have to spend on a similar player next summer. Edited August 9, 20187 yr by Floyd25

Another reason it might be useful is that its giving someone like Barkley /RLC the opportunity to earn the place for next season whilst protecting ourselves against them not being ready
August 9, 20187 yr And the number of players across the park we need to move on and replace for next summer is scary. Fabs, Pedro and Girourd are on their last legs. May be Willian too. Alonso isnt getting any quicker. Morata might not improve. Drinkwater, Bakayoko, Zappacosta and Bats are not Chelsea level. Moses is plain average. RLC divides opinion. Cahill will be gone. And then be able to keep the likes of Kante and Hazard from the clutches of PSG and Madid is a tall order. Unless a couple of these youngsters come good, we will be hundreds of millions away from competing for the title in today’s inflated market.

So during his loan spell he (1) turns in a stella season and Madrid want £100m for him or (2) He's Bakayoko mark 2 And madrid pay us to keep him.
August 9, 20187 yr If he’s the difference between finishing in a CL place or not, I don’t think it’s a bad bit of business at all.
August 9, 20187 yr Would much rather have Kovacic for a year and Kepa than Vecino and Butland, which was the likely alternative.

By next season we should really consider giving a bigger role in the team to Ampadu, Hudson-Odoi and Loftus-Cheek. That still doesn't cover the squad though, in the best case scenario the team will still need at least one striker, two wingers and a center back, and that's the minimal but optimal would be all that + 1 more quality midfielder. This means that if this season Chelsea finishes below top 4, maybe we will stay below top 4 for more than just a few seasons.

August 9, 20187 yr At worst he is a short stop gap when we eventually splash the cash on a big midfield signing. At best he does amazing here and we decide to buy him and we build a relationship with Madrid, who will in turn buy Hazard from us for a generous fee for someone in his last year of the contract (or include Kovasic as part of the fee for Hazard. Kovasic + cash).

That's a fair point but I was just pointing out that it's unfair to judge him for not being able to break into Madrid's starting 11 when he had 2 of best CMs in the world playing in his position. It's not a fair reflection of his abilty It wasn't that long ago that Isco wasn't a starter for Madrid but right now almost every team in Europe would love to him in their team
August 9, 20187 yr Watch his first words in the app. Seems a nice bloke. Great to have such a talent.

Even if we don't get to keep him, he helps us achieve CL football and then possibly have Mount come back (asking a lot of the young guy, I know) and possibly help the midfield out. I am okay with not having a buy back clause
August 9, 20187 yr Even if there's no option to buy, if he has a good season at Chelsea and enjoys his time here, he'll most likely push for a move to permanently stay, especially if Modric remains at Madrid. I think his Madrid career is done. Looking forward to the season now. The Butland/Vecino links were really depressing. Dodged a bullet there.
August 10, 20187 yr His latest insta signifies he’s leaving Madrid for good, not just on loan. Could be us or anyone after this year.
August 10, 20187 yr Hopefully he stays with us long term then! Would love him at the club on a permanent basis.

August 10, 20187 yr He will have a couple of years left on his deal with Madrid next summer. If he does well this season and feels settled in London, think we could pull the same trick that Madrid pulled on us with Courtois. Hope he has a smashing year here.

Five year contract and given the club captaincy by the end of the month. Club are going to bend over backwards to avoid becoming a selling club. Courtois was an anomaly, not the norm.
August 10, 20187 yr we have somehow gone from a incredibly weak midfeld last season to potentially one of the worlds best if we play Kante-Jorginho-Kovacic
