The difference in fan base now is social media. In 1979 when Butch went the first most people heard about it was reading it on the back page on the Sun when the deal was done. None of this weeks of rumour and speculation where anyone from 9-90 can spout sh*t and lies for whatever reason to suit there own little agendas, for click bait for wind up or whatever, and there are many, a lot on here, who seem to give credence to all the crap they read.

Most annoying is that there are many who just want to believe and highlight the negatives about the club, the players, the manager, the owners to suit their backstory.

In the 70’s 80’s the majority or football fans followed their teams though 5 min highlights on the weekend through MOTD and TBM and reading the Sunday papers. What players did was really none of my business and did not affect me. Those were happy days of supporting football IMO.

Well here I am now, retired, having a cup of coffee, enjoying life, going to grandkids sports day later, but also drawn into feeling a need to spout off on a forum.

BTW is social media classed as FB, twitter and those sort of things or does Fan Forums also come under the umbrella.

Three months after he signed for Utd, @goose found out about it and wrote a strongly worded letter expressing his disappointment but also recognising his need to grow as a professional footballer.  It rocked Ray hard reading that

I have two theories for why things have become so muddied.

1. This is all just a ruse by Mount's camp and they're playing poker like how the big boys do it. Bluff leaving to get the best possible deal from the owners. Can't fault him for it if it's true Rooney did the same thing and actually used us and Jose to do it. He wouldn't be the first and he certainly wouldn't be the last.

2. He wants to leave because of a multitude of reasons, one being he doesn't like the project (sees the new owners as clowns), feels disrespected by their removal of a previously agreed deal. Wants a fresh challenge, wants a regular starting spot or even position on the field. Maybe e he just wants to play for the same coach (let's not forget since he broke through he's technically had 5 coaches and Pochettino would be the 6th if we include Lamps twice).

Either way I'm very calm about the situation, love the lad but if he wants to leave I understand. The important thing from a Chelsea perspective is we refuse to negotiate. Either they meet the asking price (£70-80m) or no deal. Now as the windows moves along we could lower this but I don't see anything below £60m.

This is good news for fans that want to keep Mason, no we won't hold him ransome because he only has a year left anyway. The board will give themselves as much time as possible with the new coach (who wants to keep him) in order to persuade him to stay.

60m for him when he only has one year left is good enough

I don't think that chart is even correct btw.

What is this twitter user using as his source data ?

Just for starters, Mount would have had great ratings in the three games against Bournemouth home (1 goal), Wolves home (2 assists) and Villa Away (2 goals), all of which are comfortably in his last 41 games,

Apparently we have told United we will not sell for below 70mill. Let's see if that holds true.

Given the amounts United spent on Sancho and Anthony let's see how badly Ten Hag wants Mount.

If Mount leaves on a contract technicality, he wants to leave anyway.

By technicality I mean added money guaranteed. Getting paid 9 or 10 million is essentially the same.

Or they wait 12 months and get him on a free. In the meantime, he stays with goodness-knows-what vibes attached.

They wait 12 months and he goes somewhere else on a free. He's not joining united in 12 months...Munich and Liverpool will be ahead of United by my reckoning.

Wherever he goes in 12 months on a free, if that's what happens, he will remain with us for 12 months with goodness-knows-what vibes. It's that alternative, staying, which will become an issue.

We can't afford to let an academy player go on a free, given their value in terms of FFP book values.

I really want Mase to stay but there's no doubting his form has faltered more recently. Its a shame that his contract situation is where it is as I think a season under Pochettino would be great for all parties. We get to see how he settles and if he can find some form and he gets to see what sort of environment our club is in after another year of the new owners.

I hope a lot of these stories aren't true and there's just some posturing going on between the club and his agents.

I know, but I'm just pointing out that United don't have the luxury of waiting a year together him on a free. As they probably won't get him.

It's a who blinks first situation here.

Apparently Pochettino has been in direct contact with Mason to tell him he is a key part of the team he is building and is desperate for him to stay.

He has also pleaded with the ownership that keeping Mount will show his value and is worth the risk of him going on a free next summer.

Just now, Blueboys said:

Twitter and the media really seem to think that Mount isn’t worth what we’re asking and is worth less than the likes of Lavia / Maddison.

Another reason to keep him. Let's try and back Pochettino as best we can.

But at this stage, how do we make FFP (£92.5m) up by not selling Mount before the 30th June?

Feels too late.

That's up to Todd and co to fix. They put us in this mess signing dross they need to fix it by not selling the crown jules.

Or just take the FFP points deduction penalty and adjust accordingly.

And let's not forget, regardless of any transfer fees that we can generate and regardless of the thoughts of us fans as to who may be untouchable  the squad needs to be culled. Those on huge weekly salaries are not going anywhere so it doesn't take a rocket scientist for us to work out the clubs probable strategy.

Real Madrid are working on a bid to sign England striker Harry Kane for about £68m as Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy refuses to sell the 29-year-old to Manchester United.

So the only team that would be stupid enough to pay £85m for Mount is... err.... probably the one selling him, Chelsea!

Marc Cucurella £65.3 amazing...

Stop with the mis-information please,

We are in an FFP hole because the two years prior to Boehly/Clearlake buying the club, the previous regime lost £153M (20/21) and £121M (21/22), requiring a profit of £170M in 22/23 to comply with the 3 year rolling target from the Premier League. At the same time they inherited a playing squad that was less than ideal, so had to make some signings to address that, particularly in defence where tardy contract negotiations with Christensen and Rudiger had allowed them to leave for free without renewing.

I'd be amazed if Levy let Kane leave for a fee as low as £68M. Makes you think that the source you're reading is probably just making it up don't you think ?

Yup. The silly season this year is sillier than ever. Anyway, Kane is record-hungry. Remember when he tried to claim an Eriksen goal as his own, swearing on his children's lives that he got the last touch? He needs 48 goals to overtake Shearer. Barring the moon turning blue, he will stay at Spurs, leaving on a free next year if he chooses.

Agree. I think he'll need at least 2 more seasons in the PL to break Shearer's record, so if Levy won't sell him to a PL rival, then his only option is to stay at Spurs until it is done.

Kane might not have won any trophies, but PL record goal scorer, and England International record goal scorer (thank god he displaced Rooney on that one) is a strong legacy and body of work for a footballing career.
