but I'm sure Ashley Cole will remind him that no one thought he was worth a starting spot over Wayne Bridge in 2006

Sarcasm I presume.

Welcome to Chelsea, Ben.

I'm unsure what to make of the signing, but Frank has been super keen on Chilwell since the beginning of last season so I'm going to back his judgment here.

He's homegrown and English, so it fills a need in this regard and I think there's plenty of upside to him. Looking forward to seeing how he develops in the coming months and years with us.

Nope, there were a few on here who had that opinion.

I loved Bridgey but it was obvious Ashley was an upgrade.

Wayne was the left sided Paulo Ferreira (who you could argue was also the left sided Paulo Ferreira!), good, strong and dependable when ever he played. His delivery from the wings was very underrated, great cross on him.

They wanted 80m we got him for 50m. Easy.

It's called... let's quote them a silly price and see how desperate they are, like the mugs at Man United. You weren't as desperate or as stupid it seems.

£50m+ a nice bundle of add ons is more than reasonable for a player who was sh*te for the last 6 months of last season and can blow hot and cold. Don't get me wrong, I think he'll make the step up as he always has. But he's not the finished article yet and some patience will be needed.

Yes, a fair price all things considered and everyone should be happy.

Although I'm not sure if Chilwell being in a bad shape is simply all that it is to it, the fact that the whole team dropped their form after the break could be something more than just down to an individual not playing well, 2 wins in the last 9 games can't be all due to Chilwell playing below the expectations. That time period obviously didn't affect the level of interest that Chelsea had in him.

I've said the other day on here that the whole team was sh*t, no hiding that. So I wouldn't read too much in to the end of last season. His form can be very up and down and if the crowd get on his back he'll struggle.

I think he'll nail down your left back spot for the best part of a decade, just give him time.

Why is everyone in here quoting £50 million plus add-ons when everything I have seen in the press says £45 million?

Chelsea sign Ben Chilwell and make him the most expensive player EVER to be signed on August 26, 2020.

None of those articles say £50m plus addons though.

Just say in the region of £50m.

Looks more like around £50m is total price, knowing the press, they would report the deal at highest possible amount including addons, bigger price, bigger story.

Most likely is £45m plus another £5m odd in bonuses.

Good deal for both parties i think.

Was watching the interview.. the no of times he says hopefully.. tells me he is desperate to do well here.. we should call him “Hopefully Ben” from now on I think!

I don't think it was that obvious actually. Bridge had cemented himself into Chelsea legend with that goal and was an attacking and defensive monster.  He had already developed understanding with Duff, Cole, Lampard and Gudjohnsen and I for one was waiting to see what would emerge playing alongside Robben. Gallas's solidity at left-back dampened that excitement, but he was never the same player after his fracture injury in 2005.

When Cole first arrived, whether by his inclination or instruction from Mourinho, his default play was to thump in useless crosses from just over the halfway line, and we played so deep as to not really warrant his defensive prowess. He did not really become the player he did until after 2008.

Glad to see we addressed the LB issue this summer. I wasn't overly keen on the thought of Chilwell, in large part due to thinking Leicester were going to pull our pants down to the tune of £80m like they did to United for Maguire.

However, if the reported fee of £45-50m is accurate that is much more reasonable for a player of his quality in my opinion. Particularly when you take in to account the "English Tax" which is put on any promising homegrown player. Could we have got a more rounded or better LB for cheaper? Maybe, but this was Frank's first choice and we've asked for years for the board to back the manager with HIS signings. This was Franks first choice and we got him for a lot cheaper than it was reported Leicester would sell for - that's a terrific result.

If Frank and Ashley think they can help Ben kick on to that next level and become one of the world's best then I'm fully on board with trusting them. Hopefully this gives us consistency at both full back positions between Chilwell and James for years to come. I'm really looking forward to what he can do here, he seems extremely keen to impress in his early interviews and if he can be even half the player Cole was then we'll still have a cracking player on our hands.
